    Multiple multimodal mobile devices: Lessons learned from engineering lifelog solutions

    For lifelogging, or the recording of one’s life history through digital means, to be successful, a range of separate multimodal mobile devices must be employed. These include smartphones such as the N95, the Microsoft SenseCam – a wearable passive photo capture device, or wearable biometric devices. Each collects a facet of the bigger picture, through, for example, personal digital photos, mobile messages and documents access history, but unfortunately, they operate independently and unaware of each other. This creates significant challenges for the practical application of these devices, the use and integration of their data and their operation by a user. In this chapter we discuss the software engineering challenges and their implications for individuals working on integration of data from multiple ubiquitous mobile devices drawing on our experiences working with such technology over the past several years for the development of integrated personal lifelogs. The chapter serves as an engineering guide to those considering working in the domain of lifelogging and more generally to those working with multiple multimodal devices and integration of their data

    The role of places and spaces in lifelog retrieval

    Finding relevant interesting items when searching or browsing within a large multi-modal personal lifelog archive is a significant challenge. The use of contextual cues to filter the collection and aid in the determination of relevant content is often suggested as means to address such challenges. This work presents an exploration of the various locations, garnered through context logging, several participants engaged in during personal information access over a 15 month period. We investigate the implications of the varying data accessed across multiple locations for context-based retrieval from such collections.     ABA/Lovaas treatment for autism and pervasive developmental disorders in the Monroe County area

    The purpose of this project was to provide school psychologists, and other professionals, an overview of the ABA/ Lovaas programs being implemented in the Monroe County area (upstate New York). Parents were surveyed, in order to gather information on the Applied Behavior Analysis/ Lovaas method they are using to treat their child. To provide additional information about the children participating in the project, a direct observation of the child was conducted and a rating scale was completed (Childhood Autism Rating Scale). Ten families participated in the project, with the child\u27s ages ranging from 37 months to 66 months. Project results indicate that parent\u27s are investing large amounts of time and energy in these programs. In all cases, parents reported combining ABA/Lovaas programs with other forms of treatment (i.e., preschool, drug therapy, music therapy, dietary treatments, etc.). Parents are generally reporting positive feelings about the treatment, although they are experiencing some concerns around program funding, availability of information, and support from local professionals

    Augmenting human memory using personal lifelogs

    Memory is a key human facility to support life activities, including social interactions, life management and problem solving. Unfortunately, our memory is not perfect. Normal individuals will have occasional memory problems which can be frustrating, while those with memory impairments can often experience a greatly reduced quality of life. Augmenting memory has the potential to make normal individuals more effective, and those with significant memory problems to have a higher general quality of life. Current technologies are now making it possible to automatically capture and store daily life experiences over an extended period, potentially even over a lifetime. This type of data collection, often referred to as a personal life log (PLL), can include data such as continuously captured pictures or videos from a first person perspective, scanned copies of archival material such as books, electronic documents read or created, and emails and SMS messages sent and received, along with context data of time of capture and access and location via GPS sensors. PLLs offer the potential for memory augmentation. Existing work on PLLs has focused on the technologies of data capture and retrieval, but little work has been done to explore how these captured data and retrieval techniques can be applied to actual use by normal people in supporting their memory. In this paper, we explore the needs for augmenting human memory from normal people based on the psychology literature on mechanisms about memory problems, and discuss the possible functions that PLLs can provide to support these memory augmentation needs. Based on this, we also suggest guidelines for data for capture, retrieval needs and computer-based interface design. Finally we introduce our work-in-process prototype PLL search system in the iCLIPS project to give an example of augmenting human memory with PLLs and computer based interfaces

    Information access tasks and evaluation for personal lifelogs

    Emerging personal lifelog (PL) collections contain permanent digital records of information associated with individuals’ daily lives. This can include materials such as emails received and sent, web content and other documents with which they have interacted, photographs, videos and music experienced passively or created, logs of phone calls and text messages, and also personal and contextual data such as location (e.g. via GPS sensors), persons and objects present (e.g. via Bluetooth) and physiological state (e.g. via biometric sensors). PLs can be collected by individuals over very extended periods, potentially running to many years. Such archives have many potential applications including helping individuals recover partial forgotten information, sharing experiences with friends or family, telling the story of one’s life, clinical applications for the memory impaired, and fundamental psychological investigations of memory. The Centre for Digital Video Processing (CDVP) at Dublin City University is currently engaged in the collection and exploration of applications of large PLs. We are collecting rich archives of daily life including textual and visual materials, and contextual context data. An important part of this work is to consider how the effectiveness of our ideas can be measured in terms of metrics and experimental design. While these studies have considerable similarity with traditional evaluation activities in areas such as information retrieval and summarization, the characteristics of PLs mean that new challenges and questions emerge. We are currently exploring the issues through a series of pilot studies and questionnaires. Our initial results indicate that there are many research questions to be explored and that the relationships between personal memory, context and content for these tasks is complex and fascinating

    Implementation of ISO 50001 Energy Management System in Sports Stadia

    Many modern sports stadia around the world consume large amounts of energy during their dayto- day operations. With the cost of this energy constantly on the rise, the challenge of managing this uncontrolled cost has become increasingly more important for the successful and sustainable operation of these facilities. It is essential that some form of energy management system be embraced by these sports stadia. This paper is a case study on Aviva Stadium’s recent implementation of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System. The authors identify the potential challenges and benefits of implementing the ISO 50001 Energy Management System in sports stadia. Final certification to the standard came on the 25th of September 2013 making Aviva Stadium the first stadium in the world to have achieved thirdparty certification to the ISO 50001 standard. This paper can act as a guide for other stadia wishing to adapt ISO 50001 to their venue, especially since it resulted in a €1 million energy cost avoidance over a three-year period

    The reflective labyrinth: An innovative tool for exploring, developing and scaffolding reflection skills at UCLan

    Reflection is increasingly being embedded into higher education curricula, not only due to the benefits it has for long-term learning, but also due to it becoming a key requirement in professional competencies beyond the university context. However, due to assumptions that reflection is an innate ability already at students’ disposal, the necessary scaffolding of the thought processes involved are often overlooked. This study therefore aimed to demonstrate how the use of a labyrinth could stimulate and deepen the learning and teaching of critical reflection skills within UCLan. Reporting on initial findings from five labyrinth workshops with staff and students, this paper identified that both groups appreciated the wellbeing effect the labyrinth afforded, but differed in their evaluation of the sessions’ most valued quality. Whereas staff welcomed the opportunity, time and space to stop and reflect on their practice, students acknowledged the labyrinth’s effectiveness for learning about reflection, its models and its application to their assessments and practice. Potentially signalling their differing familiarity with the processes and goals of reflection, this study concluded that the labyrinth is a useful scaffolding tool for the learning and teaching of reflection which can be used across different subject areas, year groups and levels of expertise
