Crystal structures of self-assembled nanotubes from flexible macrocycles by weak interactions

The assembly is driven by the propensity of the macrocycles to create nearly flat structures displaying a void space within them and the cooperativity of weak directional interactions such as dipole–dipole interactions and CH***Ohydrogen bonds and non-directional interactions such as van der Waals contacts. The significance of the stereochemistry and the size of the cavity in the formation of the nanotubes are also studied.This research was supported by the Spanish MICINN-FEDER

The Machine Learning Landscape of Top Taggers
Based on the established task of identifying boosted, hadronically decaying
top quarks, we compare a wide range of modern machine learning approaches.
Unlike most established methods they rely on low-level input, for instance
calorimeter output. While their network architectures are vastly different,
their performance is comparatively similar. In general, we find that these new

Hydrodynamic interactions in colloidal ferrofluids: A lattice Boltzmann study
We use lattice Boltzmann simulations, in conjunction with Ewald summation
methods, to investigate the role of hydrodynamic interactions in colloidal
suspensions of dipolar particles, such as ferrofluids. Our work addresses
volume fractions of up to 0.20 and dimensionless dipolar interaction
parameters of up to 8. We compare quantitatively with Brownian
dynamics simulations, in which many-body hydrodynamic interactions are absent.
Monte Carlo data are also used to check the accuracy of static properties
measured with the lattice Boltzmann technique. At equilibrium, hydrodynamic
interactions slow down both the long-time and the short-time decays of the
intermediate scattering function , for wavevectors close to the peak of
the static structure factor , by a factor of roughly two. The long-time
slowing is diminished at high interaction strengths whereas the short-time
slowing (quantified via the hydrodynamic factor ) is less affected by the
dipolar interactions, despite their strong effect on the pair distribution
function arising from cluster formation. Cluster formation is also studied in
transient data following a quench from ; hydrodynamic interactions

Are entrepreneurs' forecasts of economic indicators biased?
Insight into the investment behaviour of firms is central in understanding economic dynamics. A critical question, however, is whether firms provide sufficiently reliable data to enable them to make plausible forecasts at the meso (regional or sectoral) level. This paper analyses Dutch investment forecasts at different levels of aggregation. The central research question is whether entrepreneurs, individually or as a group, make systematic errors in their investment forecasts. A statistical test reveals that investment forecasts are not biased at the aggregated (regional and sectoral) level. At the micro level, however, there is a significant bias. Hence, using aggregated (regional and sectoral) data to test the lack of bias (unbiasedness) of forecasts may lead to the wrong conclusions. Moreover, aggregated investment forecasts may then be an inappropriate source for policy recommendations, despite their seemingly high reliability. This finding may in principle be valid for many European countries, since data collection on investment is organized in similar ways throughout Europe
Randomized, double blind study of non-excitatory, cardiac contractility modulation electrical impulses fr symptomatic heart failure
AIMS: We performed a randomized, double blind, crossover study of cardiac contractility modulation (CCM) signals in heart failure patients.
METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and sixty-four subjects with ejection fraction (EF) < 35% and NYHA Class II (24%) or III (76%) symptoms received a CCM pulse generator. Patients were randomly assigned to Group 1 (n = 80, CCM treatment 3 months, sham treatment second 3 months) or Group 2 (n = 84, sham treatment 3 months, CCM treatment second 3 months). The co-primary endpoints were changes in peak oxygen consumption (VO2,peak) and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLWHFQ). Baseline EF (29.3 +/- 6.7% vs. 29.8 +/- 7.8%), VO2,peak (14.1 +/- 3.0 vs. 13.6 +/- 2.7 mL/kg/min), and MLWHFQ (38.9 +/- 27.4 vs. 36.5 +/- 27.1) were similar between the groups. VO2,peak increased similarly in both groups during the first 3 months (0.40 +/- 3.0 vs. 0.37 +/- 3.3 mL/kg/min, placebo effect). During the next 3 months, VO2,peak decreased in the group switched to sham (-0.86 +/- 3.06 mL/kg/min) and increased in patients switched to active treatment (0.16 +/- 2.50 mL/kg/min). MLWHFQ trended better with treatment (-12.06 +/- 15.33 vs. -9.70 +/- 16.71) during the first 3 months, increased during the second 3 months in the group switched to sham (+4.70 +/- 16.57), and decreased further in patients switched to active treatment (-0.70 +/- 15.13). A comparison of values at the end of active treatment periods vs. end of sham treatment periods indicates statistically significantly improved VO2,peak and MLWHFQ (P = 0.03 for each parameter).
CONCLUSION: In patients with heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction, CCM signals appear safe; exercise tolerance and quality of life (MLWHFQ) were significantly better while patients were receiving active treatment with CCM for a 3-month period
Early replication in pulmonary B cells after infection with marek's disease herpesvirus by the respiratory route
Natural infection with Marek's disease virus occurs through the respiratory mucosa after chickens inhale dander shed from infected chickens. The early events in the lung following exposure to the feather and squamous epithelial cell debris containing the viral particles remain unclear. In order to elucidate the virological and immunological consequences of MDV infection for the respiratory tract, chickens were infected by intratracheal administration of infective dander. Differences between susceptible and resistant chickens were immediately apparent, with delayed viral replication and earlier onset of interferon (IFN)-γ production in the latter. CD4+ and CD8 + T cells surrounded infected cells in the lung. Although viral replication was evident in macrophages, pulmonary B cells were the main target cell type in susceptible chickens following intratracheal infection with MDV. In accordance, depletion of B cells curtailed viremia and substantially affected pathogenesis in susceptible chickens. Together the data described here demonstrate the role of pulmonary B cells as the primary and predominant target cells and their importance for MDV pathogenesis. © 2009, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
The structure of N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models in AdS_4
We present a detailed study of the most general N=2 supersymmetric sigma
models in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space AdS_4 formulated in terms of
N=1 chiral superfields. The target space is demonstrated to be a non-compact
hyperkahler manifold restricted to possess a special Killing vector field which
generates an SO(2) group of rotations on the two-sphere of complex structures
and necessarily leaves one of them invariant. All hyperkahler cones, that is
the target spaces of N=2 superconformal sigma models, prove to possess such a
vector field that belongs to the Lie algebra of an isometry group SU(2) acting
by rotations on the complex structures. A unique property of the N=2 sigma
models constructed is that the algebra of OSp(2|4) transformations closes off
the mass shell. We uncover the underlying N=2 superfield formulation for the
N=2 sigma models constructed and compute the associated N=2 supercurrent.
We give a special analysis of the most general systems of self-interacting
N=2 tensor multiplets in AdS_4 and their dual sigma models realized in terms of
N=1 chiral multiplets. We also briefly discuss the relationship between our
results on N=2 supersymmetric sigma models formulated in the N=1 AdS superspace
and the off-shell sigma models constructed in the N=2 AdS superspace in
