The biocrystallization method was standardised on carrot and wheat. With the standardised
method samples from different farming systems could be successfully discriminated.
For this paper, we investigated to what degree the standardised method
can be adapted to other product classes like apples or Aloe vera. We found, that the
sample preparation procedures must be developed for each new product whereas the
conditions for the steps evaporation and crystallization as well as the evaluation of the
patterns could be directly transferred. The variability as well as the factors of influence
could be compared to those found on carrot and wheat samples
With the Steigbild technique patterns are produced on thin-layer chromatographic
paper and evaluated as a fingerprint of the sample as a whole. To be applied in routine
analysis the method has to be standardised according to international standard
norms. The operating procedures were documented and a method for the visual
evaluation was standardised. Then several factors of influence were tested and the
reproducibility was investigated. The method is able to differentiate patterns from
samples from different farming treatments and processing steps. Farm pairs of organic
and conventional farm management can be distinguished as statistical significant and
classified according to the farming system for carrot and wheat samples. This represents
a significant step forward beyond the state of the art
Authentizität und Sicherheit von MÜhrenproben im Rahmen des CORE-Organic QACCP Projektes
Consumer demand for healthy, safe and high quality food is increasing. Against this
background, the demand for organically grown food has been growing rapidly. Organic
farming contains the whole food chain from field to fork. An analyse system to optimise
the process needs to be established (QualityAnalysisCriticalControlPoint). The aim
of the transnational CORE-Organic QACCP project is a chain analysis which addresses
the link between farm and fork and backwards from fork to farm. The objective is
to improve product related quality management in farming and processing. The results
presented here are dealing with food authenticity on farm level through biocrystallization
measurements and food safety through pesticide residue and nitrate determination
Definition, Sicherung und Kommunikation Ăkologischer Produktqualität - Betrachtungen am Beispiel des Tafelapfels
Organic production standards are used by actors along the organic production and
supply chain as measures for quality assurance and tools for communication and
differentiation of organic product and process quality. The results of a literature review
show that the main aspects of organic product quality are not considered by the most
significant standards for organic production in Germany and hence, these standards
are not appropriate measures for the above mentioned purposes
Assessment of processing technologies which may improve the nutritional composition of dairy products â Overview of progress
Among consumers there is a growing demand for food products with a natural nutritional-physiological advantage over comparable conventional products. As part of an EU funded project, ALP is examining the possible impact of processing on nutritionally valuable milk components, using the example of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA). The extent to which processing influences the CLA content of the end product was determined by literature research and own investigations of organic and conventional butter. Furthermore, new chemical, sensory-based and bio crystallization methods were evaluated by ALP and the University of Kassel to determine the oxidation stability of butter. In a further step the storage stability of CLA enriched and conventional butter was examined and the different methods will be compared. As a third objective a process for low-input CLA enrichment of milk fat (with a focus on alpine butter) has been developed. Since the process selected for the work is a physical enrichment process, it is accepted by international organic farming and food groups. Among the many benefits ascribed to CLA, it is believed to be an effective agent against cancer. The demand for foods with properties that promote human health is growing. The dairy industry has the opportunity to meet this demand by developing new dairy products with a nutritional-physiological function for the functional food market
Factors determining a successful socioeconomic introduction of horticulture in foreign countries - Academic Consultancy Training Report
Course: Academic Consultancy Training (YMC 60809) Project: Sustainable development of greenhouse horticulture in developing countries (756) Commissioner: Wageningen UR Greenhouse Horticulture Contact person: Ir. C.J.M. van der Lans Coach: Dr. Ir. J.W. Hofstee Expert: Prof. Dr. O. van Kooten A lot of capital is attracted in the initiation of Dutch horticulture businesses abroad. There is however a lack of knowledge about what is known about the critical factors determining success or failure of a horticultural initiative in a foreign country. The goal of this project is to achieve socio-economic sustainability of the greenhouse horticulture in foreign countries. Therefore a model is presented which contains all the necessary factors that an entrepreneur should keep in mind to achieve socio-economic sustainability. In order to get an overview of all the important factors literature was studied and interviews were conducted. This led to a detailed description of all the issues that should be considered when setting-up businesses abroad. Those factors are represented in a âdialâ model pointing out what issues an entrepreneur should consider. The model is subdivided in three topics: market, production and trade & logistics. Important factors related to the market are whether there is a market and how to influence the whole production chain. Important factors for the production are the physical place and the employees. A very important factor of the trading is the legalization and the bureaucracy of the country you are producing in
