PUBLIC SERVICES FROM THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SOCIAL SECURITY POLICIES PERSPECTIVE IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose to investigate the social security policy effectiveness. For the assessment we take into consideration a sample of 27 countries (EU27) for an observation time span between 2005 and 2010. Inequality and poverty are taken as criteria for analysis. As related indicators we consider the GINI coefficient for inequality and disposable income below 60% of the national average for poverty. As tools of analysis we propose the use of matrixes that reflects both the static and the dynamic perspective of the existing situation. At the European Union level the matrixes of analysis reveals a heterogeneous situation

Culture of Yellow Perch in Recirculating Systems

Fifty-five yellow perch (Perca flavescens) that average 7.5 grams each were stocked into each of twelve recirculating systems (380 L each). Fish were fed a 30% protein (4% lipid), or a 50% protein (15% lipid) diet, either continuously or twice daily for 23 weeks. Yellow perch grew significantly (p\u3c0.05) larger and exhibited better feed conversion (3.2:1) on the 50% protein, 15% lipid, ration. At harvest, they averaged 45.6 grams weight and exhibited an average 98% survival. Fish fed a 30% protein, 4% lipid ration averaged 25.7 grams at harvest, exhibited a 96.5% survival, and had an average feed conversion of 4.4:1. Fish maintained on the 30% protein, 4% lipid diet presented continuously had significantly (p\u3c0.05) more mortalities and lower feed conversion. Their mortality rate was 6% vs. the 1% of fish fed twice/day and the 3% of all fish maintained on the 50% protein, 15% lipid diet fed continuously. Fish fed the 30% protein regimen also had a feed conversion of 5.1:1 vs. the 3.8:1 exhibited by the group fed the 30% protein, 4% lipid diet twice/day. Yellow perch survived and grew reasonably well when cultured under controlled laboratory conditions that simulated a commercial operation

    Iron-Deficiency Anemia

    Get PDF
Iron is an important element in living systems as it participates in a series of metabolic processes including DNA synthesis and oxygen and electron transport. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia globally being an important healthcare problem. If left untreated, iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) can cause significant morbidity and often is the result of a more serious underlying condition. Correcting iron deficiency and replenishing iron reserves are important objectives of a well-conducted treatment, but diagnosis should prompt further investigation to establish the cause for potential reversal. Age, tolerance, preferred route of administration, and severity of anemia are some of the patient’s characteristics which require an individualized approach

Development and social security system sustainability

In this paper we propose to investigate the link between economic development, social security system and the sustainability of the policies pursued by states. In doing so, we start from clarifying and summarizing the main ideas on the concepts of development and social security. Depending on the approach to social security (narrow or broad) and the developing status of the states (developed or developing) we propose a matrix of classification and analysis that can offer new perspectives on decisions about type of policy to be pursued by governments to ensure sustainable development and social security system sustainability

Cooperative DNA-binding by Bicoid provides a mechanism for threshold-dependent gene activation in the Drosophila embryo

    No full text
The Bicoid morphogen directs pattern formation along the anterior-posterior (A-P) axis of the Drosophila embryo. Bicoid is distributed in a concentration gradient that decreases exponentially from the anterior pole, however, it transcribes target genes such as hunchback in a step-function-like pattern; the expression domain is uniform and has a sharply defined posterior boundary. A 'gradient-affinity' model proposed to explain Bicoid action states that (i) cooperative gene activation by Bicoid generates the sharp on/off switch for target gene transcription and (ii) target genes with different affinities for Bicoid are expressed at different positions along the A-P axis. Using an in vivo yeast assay and in vitro methods, we show that Bicoid binds DNA with pairwise cooperativity; Bicoid bound to a strong site helps Bicoid bind to a weak site. These results support the first aspect of the model, providing a mechanism by which Bicoid generates sharp boundaries of gene expression. However, contrary to the second aspect of the model, we find no significant difference between the affinity of Bicoid for the anterior gene hunchback and the posterior gene knirps, We propose, instead, that the arrangement of Bicoids bound to the target gene presents a unique signature to the transcription machinery that, in combination with overall affinity, regulates the extent of gene transcription along the A-P axis

Measuring The Performance of An Enterprise's Management Team

    Get PDF
The question we are answering is: How do we evaluate the performance of an enterprise's leadership. There are two perspectives of evaluation and the criteria are diverse: What is the potential of management? What are management’s results? Sometimes the answers intersect sometimes not. In this paper, we are proposing some benchmarks for evaluating the achievements of business management

The scientific concern of the authors is part of the project entitled: “The research, testing and using in the laboratory of natural products presenting significant impacts for de-acidification of paper collections“, an ambitious, original scientific project with perspective steps in ecological development and application of technological, clean lines, about the info- documents de-acidification for paper from libraries, museums and archives. Testing the natural products in pure chemical structures or composite structure (structure-blending) and obtaining of the stable chemical formula of the product is the first phase of the project which will check several products with destabilizing effects of hydrogen ions in the structure of the paper
