    Efficiency considerations and the allocation of new deal funds: an examination of the public goods explanation of expenditure patterns

    The uneven state-level distribution of New Deal spending has been frequently studied and a variety of economic and political models have been developed. In their article, “Does the Distribution of New Deal Spending Reflect an Optimal Provision of Public Goods?,†(Economics Bulletin, Vol. 8, No. 3, 2007. pp 1-5) Bateman and Taylor propose that much of the disparity in state-level New Deal expenditures can be explained if the creation of public goods and the spillover effects are included in economic models.     Infrared images of reflection nebulae and Orion's bar: Fluorescent molecular hydrogen and the 3.3 micron feature

    Images were obtained of the (fluorescent) molecular hydrogen 1-0 S(1) line, and of the 3.3 micron emission feature, in Orion's Bar and three reflection nebulae. The emission from these species appears to come from the same spatial locations in all sources observed. This suggests that the 3.3 micron feature is excited by the same energetic UV-photons which cause the molecular hydrogen to fluoresce

    XMM-Newton observations of the supernova remnant IC443: I. soft X-ray emission from shocked interstellar medium

    The shocked interstellar medium around IC443 produces strong X-ray emission in the soft energy band (E<1.5 keV). We present an analysis of such emission as observed with the EPIC MOS cameras on board the XMM-Newotn observatory, with the purpose to find clear signatures of the interactions with the interstellar medium (ISM) in the X-ray band, which may complement results obtained in other wavelenghts. We found that the giant molecular cloud mapped in CO emission is located in the foreground and gives an evident signature in the absorption of X-rays. This cloud may have a torus shape and the part of torus interacting with the IC443 shock gives rise to 2MASS-K emission in the southeast. The measured density of emitting X-ray shocked plasma increases toward the northeastern limb, where the remnant is interacting with an atomic cloud. We found an excellent correlation between emission in the 0.3-0.5 keV band and bright optical/radio filament on large spatial scales. The partial shell structure seen in this band therefore traces the encounter with the atomic cloud.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ (20 September 2006, v649).     In this study, we analyze eBusiness entrepreneurs nominated by the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award program to ascertain whether qualitative factors are correlated with success. We find qualitative factors are incrementally informative above and beyond the information provided by quantitative factors. More specifically, firms that are able to maintain their innovative strategies by improving upon the product (or service) they offer and are able to meet the long-term needs of the customer are more likely to experience increased sales growth and have greater access to capital which results in a successful harvest strategy

    Two 2MASS-Selected Young Stellar Clusters: Photometry, Spectroscopy, and the IMF

    We present near-infrared J, H, and K_s images and K-band spectroscopy of two newly discovered stellar clusters at different stages of evolution. Our spectra suggest the presence of massive YSOs in the heavily embedded cluster in the star-forming region near radio source G353.4-0.4 and an O5-O6V star in the cluster near radio source G305+00.2. We determine a K-band luminosity function (KLF) for both clusters and an initial mass function (IMF) for the cluster near G305+00.2. The derived IMF slope is -1.5 if the KLF is used to derive the IMF and is -0.98 if the color-magnitude diagram and spectra are used. The more reliable CMD-based slope is flatter than the Salpeter value usually found for stellar clusters. We find that using the KLF alone to derive an IMF is likely to produce an overly steep slope in stellar clusters subject to variable extinction.Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures, accepted to A
