    Automated processing of whole blood samples into microliter aliquots of plasma

    A rotor that accepts and automatically processes a bulk aliquot of a single blood sample into multiple aliquots of plasma has been designed and built. The rotor consists of a central processing unit, which includes a disk containing eight precision-bore capillaries. By varying the internal diameters of the capillaries, aliquot volumes ranging 1 to 10 ÎĽl can be prepared. In practice, an unmeasured volume of blood is placed in a centre well, and, as the rotor begins to spin, is moved radially into a central annular ring where it is distributed into a series of processing chambers. The rotor is then spun at 3000 rpm for 10 min. When the centrifugal field is removed by slowly decreasing the rotor speed, an aliquot of plasma is withdrawn by capillary action into each of the capillary tubes. The disk containing the eight measured aliquots of plasma is subsequently removed and placed in a modifed rotor for conventional centrifugal analysis. Initial evaluation of the new rotor indicates that it is capable of producing discrete, microliter volumes of plasma with a degree of accuracy and precision approaching that of mechanical pipettes

    Degrees of Change: Is There Room for the Foreign LIS Degree in Today\u27s Academic Library?

    The American Library Association (ALA) accredited Masters in Library Science (MLS) has long been considered the standard terminal degree for most academic librarians. However, there are many relevant degrees offered in foreign countries that are not evaluated by the American Library Association. At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, a task force was formed to investigate whether the library faculty should revise their Operating Paper to allow for foreign library science degrees. Members of the task force researched the nature and quality of foreign library and information science education. They also investigated how other academic libraries handle this question by compiling data on the degree requirements listed in position advertisements for academic libraries posted between October 1 and November 5, 2008. The data suggests that many academic libraries allow individuals with non-ALA accredited library science degrees to apply for professional positions. This presentation examines the results of the task force’s investigation.     Foreign LIS Degrees in Contemporary US Academic Libraries

    Purpose – The purpose of this case study is to summarize a task force\u27s efforts to change the educational degree requirements for open librarian positions at a large university in the Midwestern USA. Design/methodology/approach – The paper reviews the literature on degree requirements in academic libraries and the nature of LIS degrees from countries outside the USA. It analyzes 136 position advertisements for academic librarians by required terminal degree and the type and Association of Research Libraries (ARL) status of the institution. Findings – The paper concludes that, while most position advertisements do not specifically address foreign Library and Information Science (LIS) degrees, many advertisements, especially those at ARL libraries, contain flexible language that allows for degrees that are “equivalent” to the American Library Association (ALA) accredited LIS degree. Research limitations/implications – The data collected from the relatively small sample of 136 job advertisements for academic librarians posted on the ALA Joblist and Chronicle of Higher Education web sites were largely meant to be anecdotal. Practical implications – The paper provides useful information for academic libraries in the USA, receiving applications for professional positions from applicants with foreign LIS degrees. Originality/value – Although the literature on the ALA-accredited Master\u27s of Library and Information Science (MLS) degree is extensive, no study considers the availability of positions to those with MLS degrees from other countries

    The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of N-phthaloyl-glycine-hydroxamic acid (Phth-Gly-HA) as a new iron chelator in vivo to be used in iron overload diseases. After intraperitoneal application of Phth-Gly-HA to male rats (1 mg kg1 body mass) once a day for seven days, iron serum level decreased by 21%, whereas the iron value dropped by 32% in female rats (1.5 mg kg1 body mass). The results indicate that the tested substance has the ability to bind serum iron by complexation. Besides transferrin iron release, mobilization of ferritin iron is also possibleU cilju pronalaženja novog efikasnog kelatora koji bi mogao poslužiti u liječenju bolesti izazvanih viškom željeza, u ovom je radu ispitano djelovanje N-ftaloil-glicin-hidroksamske kiseline (Phth-Gly-HA) in vivo. Istraživan je utjecaj kelatora na razinu željeza u serumu štakora nakon intraperitonealne primjene vodene otopine Phth-Gly-HA (0,1 mg mL1) jednom dnevno tijekom 7 dana. Kontrolne su životinje primale fiziološku otopinu. Kod mužjaka injektiranje test supstancije (1 mg kg1) uzrokovalo je pad serumskog željeza za 21%. Kod ženki je nakon tretmana (1,5 mg kg1) izmjereno sniženje razine željeza za 35%. Rezultati pokazuju da ispitivana supstanca ima sposobnost kompleksiranja serumskog željeza, pretežno transferinskog, ali da postoji mogućnost mobilizacije željeza i iz feritinskih zaliha

    Overexpression of Parathyroid Hormone-related Protein in the Pancreatic Islets of Transgenic Mice Causes Islet Hyperplasia, Hyperinsulinemia, and Hypoglycemia

    Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is produced by the pancreatic islet. It also has receptors on islet cells, suggesting that it may serve a paracrine or autocrine role within the islet. We have developed transgenic mice, which overexpress PTHrP in the islet through the use of the rat insulin II promoter (RIP). Glucose homeostasis in these mice is markedly abnormal; RIP-PTHrP mice are hypoglycemic in the postprandial and fasting states and display inappropriate hyperinsulinemia. At the end of a 24-hour fast, blood glucose values are 49 mg/dl in RIP-PTHrP mice, as compared to 77 mg/dl in normal littermates; insulin concentrations at this time are 6.3 and 3.9 ng/ml, respectively. Islet perifusion studies failed to demonstrate abnormalities in insulin secretion. In contrast, quantitative islet histomorphometry demonstrates that the total islet number and total islet mass are 2-fold higher in RIP-PTHrP mice than in their normal littermates. PTHrP very likely plays a normal physiologic role within the pancreatic islet. This role is most likely paracrine or autocrine. PTHrP appears to regulate insulin secretion either directly or indirectly, through developmental or growth effects on islet mass. PTHrP may have a role as an agent that enhances islet mass and/or enhances insulin secretion
