Purpose of investigation was to identify candidate materials for self-evacuating multilayer insulation systems to be used on liquid hydrogen tanks on space shuttle, which would survive re-entry temperatures and mechanical and thermal cycling of one hundred flights

Differential effect of denervation on free radical scavenging enzymes in slow and fast muscle of rat

    Get PDF
To determine the effect of denervation on the free radical scavenging systems in relation to the mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in the slow twitch soleus and fast twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles, the sciatic nerve of the rat was crushed in the mid-thigh region and the muscle tissue levels of 5 enzymes were studied 2 and 5 weeks following crush. Radioimmunoassays were utilized for the selective measurement of cuprozinc (cytosolic) and mangano (mitochondrial) superoxide dismutases. These data represent the first systematic report of free radical scavening systems in slow and fast muscles in response to denervation. Selective modification of cuprozinc and manganosuperoxide dismutases and differential regulation of GSH-peroxidase was demonstrated in slow and fast muscle

PREMATURE SHUT OFF POSSIBILITY PREDICTION FOR AUTOMOTIVE FUEL TANK SYSTEM

Prediction of the possibility of a vehicle fuel tank supply process prematureshut off is of main concern for the automotive industry. The main objectiveof this work is to show that premature shut off can be explained by the absenceof a steady state after the initial transient in the fuel supply process. Thevehicle fuel tank considered in this work is composed only of a rectilinearpipe inclined with respect to the horizontal and connected to the top of arectangular tank. The counter-current two-phase flow in the pipe is modeledusing the one-dimensional drift flux model and the tankis modeled as a control volume where mass conservation for each phase isconsidered. Linear stability analysis of the two-phase flow model shows theabsence of the steady state phase for a range of liquid flow rates before theflooding condition is achieved as a function of tube inclination and length. This fact suggests that premature shut off occurs due to the absence of asteady state regime phase during the fuel supply process

How an Online Education Module Influences Attitudes toward Relationship Education: A Randomized Experiment

    Get PDF
Growing evidence suggests that many people do not see the differences between relationship education (RE) and couples therapy (CT). In fact, many lack information regarding the details and processes included in both RE and CT. If the differences are not understood, fewer people may be inclined to attend RE. RE has experienced various recruitment challenges over the years. The Theory of Planned Behavior illustrates how attitudes and intentionality are linked. If participants gain knowledge about a service, their attitudes about that service and intentions to participate change. For this study, an online module was created to provide information on the details and processes entailed in RE and CT, and the differences between RE and CT. A sample of 224 participants was randomly assigned to a treatment group (n = 112), who received a pretest, the module, and the posttest, or a control group (n = 112), who received the pretest and posttest only. Results showed that participation in the online module had significant effects on RE knowledge, attitudes, and intentions to participate

Predicting the Detectability of Thin Gaseous Plumes in Hyperspectral Images Using Basis Vectors

    Get PDF
This paper describes a new method for predicting the detectability of thin gaseous plumes in hyperspectral images. The novelty of this method is the use of basis vectors for each of the spectral channels of a collection instrument to calculate noise-equivalent concentration-pathlengths instead of matching scene pixels to absorbance spectra of gases in a library. This method provides insight into regions of the spectrum where gas detection will be relatively easier or harder, as influenced by ground emissivity, temperature contrast, and the atmosphere. Our results show that data collection planning could be influenced by information about when potential plumes are likely to be over background segments that are most conducive to detection

Perceptual History Acts in World-Centred Coordinates

Serial dependence effects have been observed using a variety of stimuli and tasks, revealing that the recent past can bias current percepts, leading to increased similarity between two. The aim of this study is to determine whether this temporal integration occurs in egocentric or allocentric coordinates. We asked participants to perform an orientation reproduction task using grating stimuli while the head was kept at a fixed position, or after a 40° yaw rotation between trials, from left (−20°) to right (+20°), putting the egocentric and allocentric cues in conflict. Under these conditions, allocentric cues prevailed
