    Cycles are strongly Ramsey-unsaturated

    We call a graph H Ramsey-unsaturated if there is an edge in the complement of H such that the Ramsey number r(H) of H does not change upon adding it to H. This notion was introduced by Balister, Lehel and Schelp who also proved that cycles (except for C4C_4) are Ramsey-unsaturated, and conjectured that, moreover, one may add any chord without changing the Ramsey number of the cycle CnC_n, unless n is even and adding the chord creates an odd cycle. We prove this conjecture for large cycles by showing a stronger statement: If a graph H is obtained by adding a linear number of chords to a cycle CnC_n, then r(H)=r(Cn)r(H)=r(C_n), as long as the maximum degree of H is bounded, H is either bipartite (for even n) or almost bipartite (for odd n), and n is large. This motivates us to call cycles strongly Ramsey-unsaturated. Our proof uses the regularity method

    Occurrence, Growth, and Food Habits of the Spotted Hake, Urophycis regia, in the Cape Fear Estuary and Adjacent Atlantic Ocean, North Carolina

    From 1973 to 1978, 62,867 Urophycis regia were collected from the Cape Fear Estuary, North Carolina, and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Most fish were young-of-the-year (25-225 mm SL), but a few age-l individuals (230-295 mm) were present in the estuary from January to June. They moved offshore or northward when water temperatures warmed above 22°C. Average monthly growth increments varied from 12 to 26 mm SL; the greatest increase in length was 92 mm from January to June 1977. Length-weight regressions for the 6-year study period were similar. Important food items were crustaceans (largely mysid shrimp and decapods) and fishes (clupeid and sciaenid larvae). The abundance of U. regia in inshore waters and the relatively large size it reaches suggests that marketing needs to be explored

    Use of Whatman-41 filters in air quality sampling networks (with applications to elemental analysis)

    The operation of a 16-site parallel high volume air sampling network with glass fiber filters on one unit and Whatman-41 filters on the other is reported. The network data and data from several other experiments indicate that (1) Sampler-to-sampler and filter-to-filter variabilities are small; (2) hygroscopic affinity of Whatman-41 filters need not introduce errors; and (3) suspended particulate samples from glass fiber filters averaged slightly, but not statistically significantly, higher than from Whatman-41-filters. The results obtained demonstrate the practicability of Whatman-41 filters for air quality monitoring and elemental analysis

    From solid solution to cluster formation of Fe and Cr in α\alpha-Zr

    To understand the mechanisms by which Fe and Cr additions increase the corrosion rate of irradiated Zr alloys, a combination of experimental (atom probe tomography, x-ray diffraction and thermoelectric power measurements) and modelling (density functional theory) techniques are employed to investigate the non-equilibrium solubility and clustering of Fe and Cr in binary Zr alloys. Cr occupies both interstitial and substitutional sites in the {\alpha}-Zr lattice, Fe favours interstitial sites, and a low-symmetry site that was not previously modelled is found to be the most favourable for Fe. Lattice expansion as a function of alloying concentration (in the dilute regime) is strongly anisotropic for Fe additions, expanding the cc-axis while contracting the aa-axis. Defect clusters are observed at higher solution concentrations, which induce a smaller amount of lattice strain compared to the dilute defects. In the presence of a Zr vacancy, all two-atom clusters are more soluble than individual point defects and as many as four Fe or three Cr atoms could be accommodated in a single Zr vacancy. The Zr vacancy is critical for the increased solubility of defect clusters, the implications for irradiation induced microstructure changes in Zr alloys are discussed.Comment: 15 pages including figure, 9 figures, 2 tables.     Perceptual Oscillations in Gender Classification of Faces, Contingent on Stimulus History

    Perception is a proactive ‘‘predictive’’ process, in which the brain takes advantage of past experience to make informed guesses about the world to test against sensory data. Here we demonstrate that in the judgment of the gender of faces, beta rhythms play an important role in communicating perceptual experience. Observers classified in forced choice as male or female, a sequence of face stimuli, which were physically constructed to be male or female or androgynous (equal morph). Classification of the androgynous stimuli oscillated rhythmically between male and female, following a complex waveform comprising 13.5 and 17 Hz. Parsing the trials based on the preceding stimulus showed that responses to androgynous stimuli preceded by male stimuli oscillated reliably at 17 Hz, whereas those preceded by female stimuli oscillated at 13.5 Hz. These results suggest that perceptual priors for face perception from recent perceptual memory are communicated through frequency-coded beta rhythms

    Biological control of Agrobacterium vitis using non-tumorigenic agrobacteria

    The potential use of non-tumorigenic agrobacteria for the biological control of grapevine crown gall in Italy was investigated. Four Agrobacterium strains belonging to the species radiobacter and vitis were used to protect the susceptible cv. Malvasia Istriana grafted on the rootstock 420 A. Moreover, the effect of each treatment on grapevine vitality and growth was assessed, including the percentage of marketable vines, as determined by industry standards. Treatments with the antagonists clearly reduced tissue colonization by the pathogen, with a drop of more than 100-fold in pathogen populations in the samples collected at the graft point. Another important effect was the reduction of internal necrosis possibly induced by the high concentration of the nopaline strain CG 49 used in the experiments. According to viticultural and commercial parameters, treatments with the antagonists improved the quality of the vines, with fewer discards and a high percentage of marketable material. Therefore, these antagonists can be considered beneficial for grapevine

    The learning experiences of health and social care paraprofessionals on a foundation degree

    Foundation degrees have been developed in the UK as a means of meeting the learning needs of paraprofessionals in health and social care and the services within which they work in a cost-effective fashion. Workplace learning is an intrinsic component to these degrees. Taking a socio-cultural perspective, this paper examines how the students' workplaces, life circumstances and sense of career trajectory shaped their learning experience and motivation. A small-scale evaluation study, using semi-structured interviews, focused on the learning experiences of a group of paraprofessionals enrolled in a foundation degree in health and social care. Data revealed fragmented employment patterns, underpinned by consistent vocational drives. While the study resonated with vocation, participants were ambivalent or lacked information about career progression. Workplace conditions, relationships and limited time shaped learning and coping strategies. A strategic and focused approach to student learning is required and includes attention to career pathways, workforce development strategy, the requirements of a range of stakeholders, workplace supervision and support for learning
