Integral constraints on the monodromy group of the hyperkahler resolution of a symmetric product of a K3 surface
Let M be a 2n-dimensional Kahler manifold deformation equivalent to the
Hilbert scheme of length n subschemes of a K3 surface S. Let Mon be the group
of automorphisms of the cohomology ring of M, which are induced by monodromy
operators. The second integral cohomology of M is endowed with the
Beauville-Bogomolov bilinear form. We prove that the restriction homomorphism
from Mon to the isometry group O[H^2(M)] is injective, for infinitely many n,
and its kernel has order at most 2, in the remaining cases. For all n, the
image of Mon in O[H^2(M)] is the subgroup generated by reflections with respect
to +2 and -2 classes. As a consequence, we get counter examples to a version of
the weight 2 Torelli question, when n-1 is not a prime power.Comment: Version 3: Latex, 54 pages. Expository change
Topological dragging of solitons
We put forward properties of solitons supported by optical lattices featuring
topological dislocations, and show that solitons experience attractive and
repulsive forces around the dislocations. Suitable arrangements of dislocations
are even found to form soliton traps, and the properties of such solitons are
shown to crucially depend on the trap topology. The uncovered phenomenon opens
a new concept for soliton control and manipulation, e.g., in disk-shaped
Bose-Einstein condensates.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letter
Beef cattle genetic and breeding projects in Vietnam and the future direction
Vietnam’s current and future human population estimates are presented. Present per capita ruminant and non-ruminant meat consumption is also reported. Based on this information, projected demand for meat from both ruminant and non-ruminant sources in 2010 will outstrip supply. It is estimated that Vietnam has the capacity to supply a high proportion of these projected shortfalls through improvement and development of its existing production systems. Specifically, this paper is focussed on describing the beef cattle breeds in Vietnam and their respective production characteristics. Further, factors that are preventing the development of coordinated beef cattle breeding strategies to improve productivity and profitability are identified and ACIAR and AusAID projects developed to improve the profitability of farmers’ beef production systems are discussed. Finally, recommendations to ensure the future development of coordinated beef cattle breeding strategies that will assist in improving the profitability of farmers’ beef enterprises are presented
GBM Observations of V404 Cyg During its 2015 Outburst
V404 Cygni was discovered in 1989 by the X-ray satellite during its
only previously observed X-ray outburst and soon after confirmed as a black
hole binary. On June 15, 2015, the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggered on a
new outburst of V404 Cygni. We present 13 days of GBM observations of this
outburst including Earth occultation flux measurements, spectral and temporal
analysis. The Earth occultation fluxes reached 30 Crab with detected emission
to 100 keV and determined, via hardness ratios, that the source was in a hard
state. At high luminosity, spectral analysis between 8 and 300 keV showed that
the electron temperature decreased with increasing luminosity. This is expected
if the protons and electrons are in thermal equilibrium during an outburst with
the electrons cooled by the Compton scattering of softer seed photons from the
disk. However, the implied seed photon temperatures are unusually high,
suggesting a contribution from another source, such as the jet. No evidence of
state transitions is seen during this time period. The temporal analysis
reveals power spectra that can be modeled with two or three strong, broad
Lorentzians, similar to the power spectra of black hole binaries in their hard
state

Enhancing the Sensitivity of SMS Fiber Sensors by the Use of High Refractive Index Coatings
This paper presents a study on the behavior of single-mode/multimode/single-mode sensors with diamond-like carbon coating of high refractive index. Spectra and response for different values of the external medium refractive index are recorded and analyzed
Electroseismic Logging For The Detection And Characterization Of Permeable Zones: Field Measurements And Theory
A Stoneley wave propagating in a borehole generates pore fluid flow within the permeable
zones intersected by the borehole. In turn, the fluid flow induces a streaming
electrical potential. This electrical potential induced by the Stoneley wave can
be -measured in the field at frequencies from 100Hz to 4000Hz. Measurements of this
Stoneley-wave-induced electrical potential can be used to detect fractures and permeable
zones. The amplitude-versus-frequency dependence of this electroseismic phenomenon
provides a new way to test theories of the acoustics and the electrokinetics of porous
media against field measurements in real :oeks.Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Borehole Acoustics and Logging ConsortiumMassachusetts Institute of Technology. Earth Resources Laboratory. Reservoir Delineation
