Formation of fundamental structures in Bose-Einstein Condensates
The meanfield interaction in a Bose condensate provides a nonlinearity which
can allow stable structures to exist in the meanfield wavefunction. We discuss
a number of examples where condensates, modelled by the one dimensional Gross
Pitaevskii equation, can produce gray solitons and we consider in detail the
case of two identical condensates colliding in a harmonic trap. Solitons are
shown to form from dark interference fringes when the soliton structure,
constrained in a defined manner, has lower energy than the interference fringe

Nutrient Estimation from 24-Hour Food Recalls Using Machine Learning and Database Mapping: A Case Study with Lactose.
The Automated Self-Administered 24-Hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24) is a free dietary recall system that outputs fewer nutrients than the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR). NDSR uses the Nutrition Coordinating Center (NCC) Food and Nutrient Database, both of which require a license. Manual lookup of ASA24 foods into NDSR is time-consuming but currently the only way to acquire NCC-exclusive nutrients. Using lactose as an example, we evaluated machine learning and database matching methods to estimate this NCC-exclusive nutrient from ASA24 reports. ASA24-reported foods were manually looked up into NDSR to obtain lactose estimates and split into training (n = 378) and test (n = 189) datasets. Nine machine learning models were developed to predict lactose from the nutrients common between ASA24 and the NCC database. Database matching algorithms were developed to match NCC foods to an ASA24 food using only nutrients ("Nutrient-Only") or the nutrient and food descriptions ("Nutrient + Text"). For both methods, the lactose values were compared to the manual curation. Among machine learning models, the XGB-Regressor model performed best on held-out test data (R2 = 0.33). For the database matching method, Nutrient + Text matching yielded the best lactose estimates (R2 = 0.76), a vast improvement over the status quo of no estimate. These results suggest that computational methods can successfully estimate an NCC-exclusive nutrient for foods reported in ASA24

Delivering sound energy along an arbitrary convex trajectory
Accelerating beams have attracted considerable research interest due to their peculiar properties and various applications. Although there have been numerous research on the generation and application of accelerating light beams, few results have been published on the generation of accelerating acoustic beams. Here we report on the experimental observation of accelerating acoustic beams along arbitrary convex trajectories. The desired trajectory is projected to the spatial phase profile on the boundary which is discretized and sampled spatially. The sound field distribution is formulated with the Green function and the integral equation method. Both the paraxial and the non-paraxial regimes are examined and observed in the experiments. The effect of obstacle scattering in the sound field is also investigated and the results demonstrate that the approach is robust against obstacle scattering. The realization of accelerating acoustic beams will have an impact on various applications where acoustic information and energy are required to be delivered along an arbitrary convex trajectory
Recollapse of the closed Tolman spacetimes
The closed-universe recollapse conjecture is studied for the spherically
symmetric spacetimes. It is proven that there exists an upper bound to the
lengths of timelike curves in any Tolman spacetime that possesses Cauchy
surfaces and whose energy density is positive. Furthermore, an explicit bound

Papua New Guinea vision-specific quality of life questionnaire: A new patient-reported outcome instrument to assess the impact of impaired vision
Background: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a new vision-specific quality of life (VS QoL) instrument and to assess the impact of vision impairment and eye disease on the quality of life of adults in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Design: This study was designed as community based cross-sectional. Participants: Six hundred fourteen adults aged 18 and above were included in this study. Methods: Focus groups and interviews guided development of a 41-item instrument. Two valid subscales of the instrument were obtained using pilot data after an iterative item reduction process guided by Rasch-based parameters. The person measures (in logits) of 614 participants were used to assess quality of life using univariate and multivariate regression analysis. Main Outcome Measures: Rasch logits. Results: Rasch analysis confirmed a 17-item instrument containing an 8-item activity limitation subscale and a 9-item well-being subscale. Both subscales were unidimensional and demonstrated good fit statistics, measurement precisions and absence of significant differential item functioning. A consistent deterioration in vision-specific quality of life was independently and significantly associated with levels of vision. Severity of vision impairment and ocular morbidity were independently associated with activity limitation and emotional well-being. Participants with refractive error had lower quality of life score than those with no ocular abnormality but higher score than those with cataract and other eye diseases. Conclusions: The 17-item PNG-VS QoL instrument is a valid and reliable instrument for the assessment of impact of impaired vision on quality of life in PNG. Vision-specific quality of life was significantly worse among participants who were older and less-educated, had lower income and have had ocular morbidities
Localization and Anomalous Transport in a 1-D Soft Boson Optical Lattice
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in a 1-D optical
lattice potential in a regime where the collective (Josephson) tunneling energy
is comparable with the on-site interaction energy, and the number of particles
per lattice site is mesoscopically large. By directly imaging the motion of
atoms in the lattice, we observe an abrupt suppression of atom transport
through the array for a critical ratio of these energies, consistent with
quantum fluctuation induced localization. Directly below the onset of
localization, the frequency of the observed superfluid transport can be
explained by a phonon excitation but deviates substantially from that predicted
by the hydrodynamic/Gross-Pitaevskii equations.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure
Temporal coherence, anomalous moments, and pairing correlations in the classical-field description of a degenerate Bose gas
The coherence properties of degenerate Bose gases have usually been expressed
in terms of spatial correlation functions, neglecting the rich information
encoded in their temporal behavior. In this paper we show, using a Hamiltonian
classical-field formalism, that temporal correlations can be used to
characterize familiar properties of a finite-temperature degenerate Bose gas.
The temporal coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate is limited only by the
slow diffusion of its phase, and thus the presence of a condensate is indicated
by a sharp feature in the temporal power spectrum of the field. We show that
the condensate mode can be obtained by averaging the field for a short time in
an appropriate phase-rotating frame, and that for a wide range of temperatures,
the condensate obtained in this approach agrees well with that defined by the
Penrose-Onsager criterion based on one-body (spatial) correlations. For time
periods long compared to the phase diffusion time, the field will average to
zero, as we would expect from the overall U(1) symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We
identify the emergence of the first moment on short time scales with the
concept of U(1) symmetry breaking that is central to traditional mean-field
theories of Bose condensation. We demonstrate that the short-time averaging
procedure constitutes a general analog of the 'anomalous' averaging operation
of symmetry-broken theories by calculating the anomalous thermal density of the
field, which we find to have form and temperature dependence consistent with

A microscopic quantum dynamics approach to the dilute condensed Bose gas
We derive quantum evolution equations for the dynamics of dilute condensed
Bose gases. The approach contains, at different orders of approximation, for
cases close to equilibrium, the Gross Pitaevskii equation and the first order
Hartree Fock Bogoliubov theory. The proposed approach is also suited for the
description of the dynamics of condensed gases which are far away from

Non-Analytic Vertex Renormalization of a Bose Gas at Finite Temperature
We derive the flow equations for the symmetry unbroken phase of a dilute
3-dimensional Bose gas. We point out that the flow equation for the interaction
contains parts which are non-analytic at the origin of the frequency-momentum
space. We examine the way this non-analyticity affects the fixed point of the
system of the flow equations and shifts the value of the critical exponent for
the correlation length closer to the experimental result in comparison with
previous work where the non-analyticity was neglected. Finally, we emphasize
the purely thermal nature of this non-analytic behaviour comparing our approach
to a previous work where non-analyticity was studied in the context of
