    Local continuity laws on the phase space of Einstein equations with sources

    Local continuity equations involving background fields and variantions of the fields, are obtained for a restricted class of solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Weyl theories using a new approach based on the concept of the adjoint of a differential operator. Such covariant conservation laws are generated by means of decoupled equations and their adjoints in such a way that the corresponding covariantly conserved currents possess some gauge-invariant properties and are expressed in terms of Debye potentials. These continuity laws lead to both a covariant description of bilinear forms on the phase space and the existence of conserved quantities. Differences and similarities with other approaches and extensions of our results are discussed.Comment: LaTeX, 13 page

    The Cosmic Censor Forbids Naked Topology

    For any asymptotically flat spacetime with a suitable causal structure obeying (a weak form of) Penrose's cosmic censorship conjecture and satisfying conditions guaranteeing focusing of complete null geodesics, we prove that active topological censorship holds. We do not assume global hyperbolicity, and therefore make no use of Cauchy surfaces and their topology. Instead, we replace this with two underlying assumptions concerning the causal structure: that no compact set can signal to arbitrarily small neighbourhoods of spatial infinity (``i0i^0-avoidance''), and that no future incomplete null geodesic is visible from future null infinity. We show that these and the focusing condition together imply that the domain of outer communications is simply connected. Furthermore, we prove lemmas which have as a consequence that if a future incomplete null geodesic were visible from infinity, then given our i0i^0-avoidance assumption, it would also be visible from points of spacetime that can communicate with infinity, and so would signify a true naked singularity.Comment: To appear in CQG, this improved version contains minor revisions to incorporate referee's suggestions.     Isotopic composition of gadolinium and neutron-capture effects in some meteorites

    The isotopic composition of Gd in one chondrite, two achondrites, and the silicate inclusions of two iron meteorites has been determined. When corrected for mass discrimination, Gd in all samples except the Norton County achondrite shows the same relative isotopic abundances as terrestrial Gd. These results set an upper limit of 3×10^(15) neutrons per cm^2 on a differential integrated thermal neutron irradiation of the earth and these meteorites. Neutron-capture effects are present in Gd extracted from the Norton County achondrite. These most probably have been produced by secondary neutrons during the exceptionally long cosmic ray exposure of this large stone meteorite. The isotopic anomalies correspond to an integrated thermal neutron flux of (6.3±0.9)×10^(15) neutrons per cm^2. The percent abundances of terrestrial Gd found in our work for Gd^(160), Gd^(158), Gd^(157), Gd^(156), Gd^(155), Gd^(154), and Gd^(152) are 21.863, 24.835, 15.652, 20.466, 14.800, 2.1809, and 0.2029, respectively. Because of the higher precision, these abundances should replace the currently accepted values

    Design of a miniature hydrogen fueled gas turbine engine

    The design, development, and delivery of a miniature hydrogen-fueled gas turbine engine are discussed. The engine was to be sized to approximate a scaled-down lift engine such as the teledyne CAE model 376. As a result, the engine design emerged as a 445N(100 lb.)-thrust engine flowing 0.86 kg (1.9 lbs.) air/sec. A 4-stage compressor was designed at a 4.0 to 1 pressure ratio for the above conditions. The compressor tip diameter was 9.14 cm (3.60 in.). To improve overall engine performance, another compressor with a 4.75 to 1 pressure ratio at the same tip diameter was designed. A matching turbine for each compressor was also designed. The turbine tip diameter was 10.16 cm (4.0 in.). A combustion chamber was designed, built, and tested for this engine. A preliminary design of the mechanical rotating parts also was completed and is discussed. Three exhaust nozzle designs are presented

    Reexamining evidence-based practice in community corrections: beyond 'a confined view' of what works

    This article aims to reexamine the development and scope of evidence-based practice (EBP) in community corrections by exploring three sets of issues. Firstly, we examine the relationships between the contested purposes of community supervision and their relationships to questions of evidence. Secondly, we explore the range of forms of evidence that might inform the pursuit of one purpose of supervision—the rehabilitation of offenders—making the case for a fuller engagement with “desistance” research in supporting this process. Thirdly, we examine who can and should be involved in conversations about EBP, arguing that both ex/offenders’ and practitioners’ voices need to be respected and heard in this debate

    Lifetimes of spherically symmetric closed universes

    It is proven that any spherically symmetric spacetime that possesses a compact Cauchy surface Σ\Sigma and that satisfies the dominant-energy and non-negative-pressures conditions must have a finite lifetime in the sense that all timelike curves in such a spacetime must have a length no greater than 10maxΣ(2m)10 \max_\Sigma(2m), where mm is the mass associated with the spheres of symmetry. This result gives a complete resolution, in the spherically symmetric case, of one version of the closed-universe recollapse conjecture (though it is likely that a slightly better bound can be established). This bound has the desirable properties of being computable from the (spherically symmetric) initial data for the spacetime and having a very simple form. In fact, its form is the same as was established, using a different method, for the spherically symmetric massless scalar field spacetimes, thereby proving a conjecture offered in that work.     Improving Underrepresented Minority Student Persistence in STEM.

    Members of the Joint Working Group on Improving Underrepresented Minorities (URMs) Persistence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-convened by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute-review current data and propose deliberation about why the academic "pathways" leak more for URM than white or Asian STEM students. They suggest expanding to include a stronger focus on the institutional barriers that need to be removed and the types of interventions that "lift" students' interests, commitment, and ability to persist in STEM fields. Using Kurt Lewin's planned approach to change, the committee describes five recommendations to increase URM persistence in STEM at the undergraduate level. These recommendations capitalize on known successes, recognize the need for accountability, and are framed to facilitate greater progress in the future. The impact of these recommendations rests upon enacting the first recommendation: to track successes and failures at the institutional level and collect data that help explain the existing trends

    Entanglement between photons and atoms coupled out from a Bose-Einstein-Condensate

    We study the limitations to the relative number squeezing between photons and atoms coupled out from a homogeneous Bose-Einstein-Condensate. We consider the coupling between the translational atomic states by two photon Bragg processes, with one of the photon modes involved in the Bragg process in a coherent state, and the other initially unpopulated. We start with an interacting Bose- condensate at zero temperature and compute the time evolution for the system. We study the squeezing, i.e. the variance of the occupation number difference between the second photon and the atomic c.m. mode. We discuss how collisions between the atoms and photon rescattering affect the degree of squeezing which may be reached in such experiments.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 3 figure

    Multiscale correlative tomography: an investigation of creep cavitation in 316 stainless steel

    Creep cavitation in an ex-service nuclear steam header Type 316 stainless steel sample is investigated through a multiscale tomography workflow spanning eight orders of magnitude, combining X-ray computed tomography (CT), plasma focused ion beam (FIB) scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging and scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) tomography. Guided by microscale X-ray CT, nanoscale X-ray CT is used to investigate the size and morphology of cavities at a triple point of grain boundaries. In order to understand the factors affecting the extent of cavitation, the orientation and crystallographic misorientation of each boundary is characterised using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Additionally, in order to better understand boundary phase growth, the chemistry of a single boundary and its associated secondary phase precipitates is probed through STEM energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tomography. The difference in cavitation of the three grain boundaries investigated suggests that the orientation of grain boundaries with respect to the direction of principal stress is important in the promotion of cavity formation
