Changes in trabecular bone, hematopoiesis and bone marrow vessels in aplastic anemia, primary osteoporosis, and old age
Retrospective histologic analyses of bone biopsies and of post mortem samples from normal persons of different age groups, and of bone biopsies of age- and sex-matched groups of patients with primary osteoporosis and aplastic anemia show characteristic age dependent as well as pathologic changes including atrophy of osseous trabeculae and of hematopoiesis, and changes in the sinusoidal and arterial capillary compartments. These results indicate the possible role of a microvascular defect in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and aplastic anemia
ADAM15 modulates outside-in signalling in chondrocyte–matrix interactions
ADAM15 belongs to a family of transmembrane multi-domain proteins implicated in proteolysis, cell–cell and cell–matrix interactions in various disease conditions. In osteoarthritis (OA), ADAM15 is up-regulated in the chondrocytes already at early stages of cartilage degeneration where it seems to exert homeostatic effects likely associated with its ability to enhance integrin-mediated chondrocyte adhesion to the surrounding collagen matrix. The aim of our present study was, therefore, to characterize functional domains of ADAM15 involved in collagen II (CII) interaction and to analyse associated outside-in signalling events. Accordingly, ADAM15 and respective deletion mutants were stably transfected into the chondrocyte cell line T/C28a4. Transfected cells were adhered to CII and phosphoproteins analysed by Western blotting. Co-immunoprecipitation served to identify protein binding to ADAM15. Our results elucidate the prodomain as critical for the capacity of ADAM15 to enhance CII adhesion, thereby identifying for the first time a cell-adhesive role of a metalloproteinase prodomain. Moreover, the cytoplasmic tail of ADAM15 confers a modulatory effect on the autophosphorylation site Y397 of the focal adhesion kinase (FAK) during chondrocyte–collagen interaction. In conclusion, the newly uncovered impact of ADAM15 on signalling events that arise from chondrocyte interactions with its collagen matrix might contribute to the elucidation of the mechanism underlying its proposed chondroprotective role in degenerative cartilage disease
Partial survival and inelastic collapse for a randomly accelerated particle
We present an exact derivation of the survival probability of a randomly
accelerated particle subject to partial absorption at the origin. We determine
the persistence exponent and the amplitude associated to the decay of the
survival probability at large times. For the problem of inelastic reflection at
the origin, with coefficient of restitution , we give a new derivation of
the condition for inelastic collapse, , and determine
the persistence exponent exactly.Comment: 6 page
CLIC Muon Sweeper Design
There are several background sources which may affect the analysis of data
and detector performans at the CLIC project. One of the important background
source is halo muons, which are generated along the beam delivery system (BDS),
for the detector performance. In order to reduce muon background, magnetized
muon sweepers have been used as a shielding material that is already described
in a previous study for CLIC [1]. The realistic muon sweeper has been designed
with OPERA. The design parameters of muon sweeper have also been used to
estimate muon background reduction with BDSIM Monte Carlo simulation code [2,

Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3
Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe and LaCrGe have
been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility
, isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity ,
specific heat C() and thermoelectric power S() measurements. These
compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space
group \textit{P6/mmc}), as previously reported. The ,
and C() data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments
in LaCrGe and CeCrGe with = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In
addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C() data of
CeCrGe. The T dependences of and finite values of Sommerfeld
coefficient obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that
both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the dependence of
of CeCrGe reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced
of 130 mJ/mol\,K together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from
the establish CeCrGe as a moderate heavy fermion compound with
