    The Chromatic Guitar Method

    Get PDF
The Chromatic Guitar Method was written to help beginning guitar students better understand music theory and music notation. In my 17 years of experience teaching guitar I have found common pitfalls associated with the standard guitar method books used in most institutions. There is a need for a new pedagogical method for guitar as the standard methods which take a diatonic approach to instruction create confusion and are simply out of date. These methods are no longer relevant to the modern guitar student In establishing a context for my pedagogical method, the philosophical foundations of using a chromatic approach will be examined as well as the challenges faced by musical educators using alternative pedagogical method

A virtual engine laboratory for teaching powertrain engineering

    Get PDF
A virtual engine laboratory application for use in automotive engineering education is proposed to allow the practical teaching of powertrain calibration. The laboratory software is built as a flexible Matlab tool that can easily be transferred for applications in other disciplines and promotes the link between teaching and research

Managing risk and consistency in the raw material supply chain for single use systems

    Get PDF
As the bioprocessing industry moves increasingly towards single use systems (SUS), security of supply at the raw material level becomes imperative to quality. Long term supply of consistent, high quality materials desired for single use film is directly attributed to the stability, continuity and quality of raw material supply from the film manufacturer. This presentation will focus on the strategic selection of raw materials for a single use platform film in the bioprocessing industry to minimize risk associated with change notifications. Utilizing a quality by design approach, a single use film was formulated with no added Irgafos 168, enhanced abuse resistance and a low extractables and leachables profile. There are several factors that are critically important to understanding quality and risk of supply in raw material sourcing. This presentation will outline the raw material selection process established to ensure supply continuity and high quality desired for use in bioprocessing films. A comprehensive study was conducted on raw materials prior to film validation and quality controls were established to ensure consistency prior to processing into single use films

The difficult, divisive and disruptive heritage of the Queensland Native Mounted Police

The colonial history of nineteenth-century Queensland was arguably dominated by the actions of the Native Mounted Police, Australia’s most punitive native policing force. The centrality of the Native Mounted Police to the sustained economic success of Queensland for over half a century, and their widespread, devastating effects on Aboriginal societies across the colony, have left a complex legacy. For non-Indigenous Queenslanders, a process of obscuring the Native Mounted Police began perhaps as soon as a detachment was removed from an area, reflected today in the minimisation of the Native Mounted Police in official histories and their omission from non-Indigenous heritage lists. In contrast, the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Database preserves several elements of frontier conflict and Native Mounted Police presence, giving rise to parallel state-level narratives, neither of which map directly onto local and regional memory. This highlights potential issues for formal processes of truth-telling relating to frontier conflict that have recently been initiated by the Queensland and Federal Governments. Of particular concern is the form that such a process might adopt. Drawing on a 4-year project to document the workings of the Queensland Native Mounted Police through archival, archaeological and oral historical sources, we suggest that this conflicted and conflictual heritage can best be bridged through empathetic truth-telling, using Rothberg’s notion of the implicated subject to consider contemporary contexts of responsibility and connect present-day Queenslanders with this difficult, divisive and disruptive past

There are more than five million small businesses in the UK. These businesses employ 12.1 million people and account for 33% of the total private sector turnover (BIS, 2014). Although a buoyant small business sector is vital to the success of the UK economy, it is well established that most small businesses never grow or, at best, achieve only modest growth. Accordingly, understanding the factors that drive and shape small business performance is a key concern for both academics and policymakers. By increasing our understanding of these factors, this innovative project can make a major contribution to entrepreneurship research and to the evidence base underpinning enterprise policy

Fast Radio Burst Tomography of the Unseen Universe

The discovery of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) at cosmological distances has opened a powerful window on otherwise unseen matter in the Universe. In the 2020s, observations of >104>10^{4} FRBs will assess the baryon contents and physical conditions in the hot/diffuse circumgalactic, intracluster, and intergalactic medium, and test extant compact-object dark matter models.Comment: Science white paper submitted to the Astro2020 Decadal Survey. 15 pages, 3 color figure
