Thermal treatment of the minority game
We study a cost function for the aggregate behavior of all the agents
involved in the Minority Game (MG) or the Bar Attendance Model (BAM). The cost
function allows to define a deterministic, synchronous dynamics that yields
results that have the main relevant features than those of the probabilistic,
sequential dynamics used for the MG or the BAM. We define a temperature through
a Langevin approach in terms of the fluctuations of the average attendance. We
prove that the cost function is an extensive quantity that can play the role of
an internal energy of the many agent system while the temperature so defined is
an intensive parameter. We compare the results of the thermal perturbation to
the deterministic dynamics and prove that they agree with those obtained with
the MG or BAM in the limit of very low temperature.Comment: 9 pages in PRE format, 6 figure

The southern Darwin's frog, R. darwinii, is found in the temperate forests of southern South America, is listed as Endangered and could be the only extant representative of this genus. Based on stomach contents, invertebrate prey availability and stable isotope analysis, we determined for the first time trophic ecological parameters for this species. Our results showed that R. darwinii is a generalist sit-and-wait predator and a secondary consumer, with a trophic position of 2.9. Carbon and nitrogen isotope composition indicated that herbivore invertebrates are their main prey, detected in 68.1% of their assimilated food. The most consumed prey included mosquitoes, flies, crickets, grasshoppers and ants. Detritivore and carnivore invertebrates were also ingested, but in lower proportions. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the feeding habits of this fully terrestrial amphibian and provide the first insight into their role linking low forest trophic positions with intermediate predators. We provide valuable biological information for in situ and ex situ conservation which can be used when developing habitat protection, reintroduction and captive breeding programmes. As revealed here, stable isotope analysis is a valuable tool to study the trophic ecology of highly endangered and cryptic species. © The authors 2018.https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/esr/v36/p269-278
Quantum tomography via equidistant states
We study the possibility of performing quantum state tomography via
equidistant states. This class of states allows us to propose a non-symmetric
informationally complete POVM based tomographic scheme. The scheme is defined
for odd dimensions and involves an inversion which can be analytically carried
out by Fourier transform
Quantitative analysis of shadow X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy
Shadow X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy
(XMCD-PEEM) is a recent technique, in which the photon intensity in the shadow
of an object lying on a surface, may be used to gather information about the
three-dimensional magnetization texture inside the object. Our purpose here is
to lay the basis of a quantitative analysis of this technique. We first discuss
the principle and implementation of a method to simulate the contrast expected
from an arbitrary micromagnetic state. Text book examples and successful
comparison with experiments are then given. Instrumental settings are finally
discussed, having an impact on the contrast and spatial resolution : photon
energy, microscope extraction voltage and plane of focus, microscope background
level, electric-field related distortion of three-dimensional objects, Fresnel
diffraction or photon scattering
New Superhard Phases for 3D C60-based Fullerites
We have explored new possible phases of 3D C60-based fullerites using
semiempirical potentials and ab-initio density functional methods. We have
found three closely related structures - two body centered orthorhombic and one
body centered cubic - having 52, 56 and 60 tetracoordinated atoms per molecule.
These 3D polymers result in semiconductors with bulk moduli near 300 GPa, and
shear moduli around 240 GPa, which make them good candidates for new low
density superhard materials.Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letter
Plasmonic metamaterials
We experimentally and theoretically determine the plasmon dispersion in coaxial waveguides. We demonstrate strong optical confinement at energies below the surface plasmon resonance. Furthermore, we find that the reflection coefficients of the coax end facets can be strongly tuned by changing the coax dispersion and surrounding dielectric, which provides a new route to optical cavities with ultrasmall mode volumes
Uso de un material volcánico como filler en la producción de hormigones autocompactantes de baja resistencia
This study evaluates the use of large amounts of fine powders (fillers) derived from a Colombian volcanic material into the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) for lower strength applications. The effects on SCC properties were studied with the incorporation of up to 50% of volcanic material of Tolima (MVT) as a partial substitute of the total weight of Portland cement. The workability was determined through slump flow, V-funnel, and L-box test. The compressive strength results were analyzed statistically by MINITAB. These demonstrated that 30% (by total weight of cementitious material) was the maximum allowable percentage of MVT to be used in the production of SCCs. Based on this, mechanical and permeability properties of SCC MVT 30% were evaluated at 28, 90 y 360 curing days. SCC MVT 30% exhibited compressive strength of 21 and 27 MPa after 28 and 360 days of curing, respectively.
First measurement of the Head-Tail directional nuclear recoil signature at energies relevant to WIMP dark matter searches
We present first evidence for the so-called Head-Tail asymmetry signature of
neutron-induced nuclear recoil tracks at energies down to 1.5 keV/amu using the
1m^3 DRIFT-IIc dark matter detector. This regime is appropriate for recoils
induced by Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMPs) but one where the
differential ionization is poorly understood. We show that the distribution of
recoil energies and directions induced here by Cf-252 neutrons matches well
that expected from massive WIMPs. The results open a powerful new means of
searching for a galactic signature from WIMPs.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Random Sequential Adsorption: From Continuum to Lattice and Pre-Patterned Substrates
The random sequential adsorption (RSA) model has served as a paradigm for
diverse phenomena in physical chemistry, as well as in other areas such as
biology, ecology, and sociology. In the present work, we survey aspects of the
RSA model with emphasis on the approach to and properties of jammed states
obtained for large times in continuum deposition versus that on lattice
substrates, and on pre-patterned surfaces. The latter model has been of recent
interest in the context of efforts to use pre-patterning as a tool to improve
selfassembly in micro- and nanoscale surface structure engineering

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) to demonstrate the nuclear binding of flavanols and (--epigallocatechin gallate
The use of light microscopy and DMACA staining strongly suggested that plant and animal cell nuclei act as sinks for flavanols [1, 2]. Detailed uv-vis spectroscopic titration experiments indicated that histone proteins are the likely binding sites in the nucleus [2]. Here we report the development of a multi-photon excitation microscopy technique combined with fluorescent lifetime measurements of flavanols. Using this technique, (+) catechin, (-) epicatechin and (-) epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) showed strikingly different excited state lifetimes in solution. Interaction of histone proteins with flavanols was indicated by the appearance of a significant τ2-component of 1.7 to 4.0ns. Tryptophan interference could be circumvented in the in vivo fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) experiments with 2-photon excitation at 630nm. This enabled visualisation and semi-quantitative measurements that demonstrated unequivocally the absorption of (+)catechin, (-)epicatechin and EGCG by nuclei of onion cells. 3D FLIM revealed for the first time that externally added EGCG penetrated the whole nucleus in onion cells. The relative proportions of EGCG in cytoplasm: nucleus: nucleoli were ca. 1:10:100. FLIM experiments may therefore facilitate probing the health effects of EGCG, which is the major constituent of green tea
