Promoting deep learning through design - discussion, student activity and assessment
There is widespread evidence that Australia is currently facing falling student participation rates in science and mathematics subjects at secondary school and university undergraduate levels. The future implications of this science-deficit are widely acknowledged. Unfortunately, science teaching itself is also widely seen as being dull, too content-heavy, delivered to mass-audiences and assessed in ways promoting surface approaches to learning. To address these issues, and issues relating to the apparent lack of challenge for very able students in their first year at university, The University of Queensland developed the Advanced Study Program in Science (ASPinS). This initiative offers an enhanced learning experience to a select group of high-achieving students in addition to their existing undergraduate study in a Science-related degree program. ASPinS offers these students the opportunity to interact with leading research scientists, broaden their understanding of important scientific issues, experience new interactive learning opportunities, undertake research projects and obtain an authentic insight into science as a career. This presentation, however, will only focus on the unique first year course offered within the 3 year ASPinS experience â BIOL1017 âPerspectives in Scienceâ. In this course students are encouraged to think about important current scientific issues from different perspectives â both scientific and non-scientific. Panels of expert scientists use their knowledge and experience to present real scientific issues for students to examine and discuss. These panel discussions cover a spectrum of medical, environmental and social issues, covering different viewpoints and possible solutions. Combining this effective panel model with an array of student-led activities provides an ideal environment for learning. Students are made to apply their new knowledge, discuss issues and construct thoughts, opinions and products â depending on the specifically designed activities. Relevant assessment tasks include group-writing activities and oral presentations which enable students to demonstrate their learning through authentic contexts that are carefully designed to influence the way students learn. Authentic assessment tasks enable students to see a purpose for the product (assessment) they are producing while at the same time enabling them to synthesise the various scientific âfactsâ and issues they have been discussing. This level of assessment activity, by its nature, encourages higher-order learning. Student evaluations have consistently confirmed that the key to the success of each Module within the course lies in the breadth of speakers selected to represent the different angles associated with the topic under discussion and the related activities and assessment tasks. The findings indicate that students value the opportunity to explore the multi-disciplinary nature of science-related issues and to actually discuss the issues. The âPerspectives in Scienceâ course is a model for the success of combining teaching and learning theory and scholarship, to a particular set of objectives, to create a highly effective learning environment and a meaningful student experience
Non-neutral processes drive the nucleotide composition of non-coding sequences in Drosophila
The nature of the forces affecting base composition is a key question in genome evolution. There is uncertainty as to whether differences in the GC contents of non-coding sequences reflect differences in mutational bias, or in the intensity of selection or biased gene conversion. We have used a polymorphism dataset for non-coding sequences on the X chromosome of Drosophila simulans to examine this question. The proportion of GCâAT versus ATâGC polymorphic mutations in a locus is correlated with its GC content. This implies the action of forces that favour GC over AT base pairs, which are apparently strongest in GC-rich sequences
The statistical mechanics of a polygenic characterunder stabilizing selection, mutation and drift
By exploiting an analogy between population genetics and statistical
mechanics, we study the evolution of a polygenic trait under stabilizing
selection, mutation, and genetic drift. This requires us to track only four
macroscopic variables, instead of the distribution of all the allele
frequencies that influence the trait. These macroscopic variables are the
expectations of: the trait mean and its square, the genetic variance, and of a
measure of heterozygosity, and are derived from a generating function that is
in turn derived by maximizing an entropy measure. These four macroscopics are
enough to accurately describe the dynamics of the trait mean and of its genetic
variance (and in principle of any other quantity). Unlike previous approaches
that were based on an infinite series of moments or cumulants, which had to be
truncated arbitrarily, our calculations provide a well-defined approximation
procedure. We apply the framework to abrupt and gradual changes in the optimum,
as well as to changes in the strength of stabilizing selection. Our
approximations are surprisingly accurate, even for systems with as few as 5
loci. We find that when the effects of drift are included, the expected genetic
variance is hardly altered by directional selection, even though it fluctuates
in any particular instance. We also find hysteresis, showing that even after
averaging over the microscopic variables, the macroscopic trajectories retain a
memory of the underlying genetic states.Comment: 35 pages, 8 figure

It is shown that in NIMROD the formation of closed current configurations, occurring only after the voltage is turned off, is due to the faster resistive decay of nonsymmetric modes compared to the symmetric projection of the 3D steady state achieved by gun injection. Implementing Spitzer resistivity is required to make a definitive comparison with experiment, using two experimental signatures of the model discussed in the paper. If there are serious disagreements, it is suggested that a phenomenological hyper-resistivity be added to the n = 0 component of Ohm's law, similar to hyper-resistive Corsica models that appear to fit experiments. Hyper-resistivity might capture physics at small scale missed by NIMROD. Encouraging results would motivate coupling NIMROD to SPICE with edge physics inspired by UEDGE, as a tool for experimental data analysis
Negotiations of minority ethnic rugby league players in the Cathar country of France
This article is based on new empirical, qualitative research with minority ethnic rugby league players in the southwest of France. Drawing on similar research on rugby league in the north and the south of England, the article examines how rugby league, traditionally viewed as a white, working-class male game (Collins, 2006; Denham, 2004; Spracklen, 1995, 2001) has had to re-imagine its symbolic boundaries as they are constituted globally and locally to accommodate the needs of players from minority ethnic backgrounds. In particular, the article examines the sense in which experiences of minority ethnic rugby league players in France compare with those of their counterparts in England (Spracklen, 2001, 2007), how rugby league is used in France to construct identity, and in what sense the norms associated with the imaginary community of rugby league are replicated or challenged by the involvement of minority ethnic rugby league players in France. Questions about what it means to be (provincial, national) French (Kumar, 2006) are posed, questions that relate to the role of sport in the construction of Frenchness, and in particular the role of rugby league (and union). © Copyright ISSA and SAGE Publications
Automated Analysis of Cryptococcal Macrophage Parasitism Using GFP-Tagged Cryptococci
The human fungal pathogens Cryptococcus neoformans and C. gattii cause life-threatening infections of the central nervous system. One of the major characteristics of cryptococcal disease is the ability of the pathogen to parasitise upon phagocytic immune effector cells, a phenomenon that correlates strongly with virulence in rodent models of infection. Despite the importance of phagocyte/Cryptococcus interactions to disease progression, current methods for assaying virulence in the acrophage system are both time consuming and low throughput. Here, we introduce the first stable and fully characterised GFPâexpressing derivatives of two widely used cryptococcal strains: C. neoformans serotype A type strain H99 and C. gattii serotype B type strain R265. Both strains show unaltered responses to environmental and host stress conditions and no deficiency in virulence in the macrophage model system. In addition, we report the development of a method to effectively and rapidly investigate macrophage parasitism by flow cytometry, a technique that preserves the accuracy of current approaches but offers a four-fold improvement in speed

âEthnic groupâ, the state and the politics of representation
The assertion, even if only by implication, that âethnic groupâ categories represent ârealâ tangible entities, indeed identities, is commonplace not only in the realms of political and policy discourse but also amongst contemporary social scientists. This paper, following Brubaker (2002), questions this position in a number of key respects: of these three issues will dominate the discussion that follows.
First, there is an interrogation of the proposition that those to whom the categories/labels refer constitute sociologically meaningful âgroupsâ as distinct from (mere) human collectivities. Secondly, there is the question of how these categories emerge, i.e. exactly what series of events, negotiations and contestations lie behind their construction and social acceptance. Thirdly, and as a corollary to the latter point, we explore the process of reification that leads to these categories being seen to represent âreal things in the worldâ (ibid.)
