FUNGAL POPULATION, AFLATOXIN AND FREE FATTY ACID CONTENTS OF PEANUTS PACKED IN DIFFERENT BAG TYPES

    Get PDF
Shelled peanuts of Gajah var. with initial moisture content of 7% were stored at 11 kg/bag in four bag types namely: jute bag, polypropylene bag, jute bag doubled with thin polyethylene (PE), and jute bag doubled with thick PE. Storage was done for six months under warehouse conditions with monitoring of relative humidity and temperature. Samples taken at the beginning of storage and every month thereafter were analyzed for moisture content, fungal population, aflatoxin and free fatty acid contents. Statistical analyses showed that moisture content, fungal population, and free fatty acid contents were significantly higher in jute and polypropylene bags than in PE-dou,bled jute bags. No significant differences were obtained in aflatoxin contents among bag types but at the end of six months storage, toxin level in jute bag exceeded the 30 ppb limit. Polypropylene had second highest toxin level at 23 ppb. The PE-doubled bags had 17 and 19 ppb total aflatoxins for thin and thick films, respectively. The results indicated that the immediate packaging of dried shelled peanuts at safe moisture level in plastic films with water vapor transmission rated of 1 g/m2/24 hr or lower is recommended. This packaging will delay critical increases in moisture content, fungal population, aflatoxin and free fatty acid contents of peanut kernels at ambient storage conditions. Television Newscasting Analysis: Towards Establishing Language Rules in Writing News Script in Filipino for Broadcast Media

This study pertained to the grammatical errors in primetime newscasting of the two biggest network in the country, TV Patrol of ABS-CBN and 24 Oras of GMA-7. This aimed to correct the errors that were documented, believing that the one of the most popular media, Television Newscasting, will aid in teaching and enriching the Filipino Language because of its wide access and influence making teaching and learning process natural and with less burden. The researcher viewed the errors positively and progressively. Corder’s (1971) error analysis was used to construct the descriptive taxonomy from the news stories/narratives of TV Patrol for the month of October and 24 Oras for August. For data gathering, the initial procedure was monitoring and documenting of news. The news for one month was transcribed and was kept in a data repository called data bank. Language manuals and guides were the basis in classifying the errors. The errors were analyzed and were classified into word Addition, Omission, Correct Usage, Proper Word, and Proper Word Order Category. And to ensure the accuracy of the results, the researcher used triangulation method through Personal Analysis, Focus Group Discussion and Final Discussion attended by experts in the Filipino Language and practitioners in newscasting, and from this, Filipino language rules, which can be the basis of news script writing for Broadcasting, were created. Keywords: Television newscasting, news script, descriptive taxonomy, error analysis, language rules in Filipino

A Scoping Review of the Health of African Immigrant and Refugee Children

    Get PDF
Migration is a growing phenomenon around the world, including within the African continent. Many migrants, especially African children, face challenges related to health and social inclusion and can face increased health risks. A systematic scoping review of available literature on the health of African migrant children across the globe was conducted to offer insight into these health risks. The review was conducted over a 15-month period from January 2019 to April 2020, yielding 6602 articles once duplicates were removed. This search included electronic databases, reference lists of articles reviewed, and searches of libraries of relevant organisations. A total of 187 studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 159 were quantitative, 22 were qualitative, and 6 used mixed methods. The findings reveal decreased health in this population in areas of nutrition, infectious diseases, mental health, birth outcomes, sexual and reproductive health, physical and developmental health, parasitic infections, oral health, respiratory health, preventative health, endocrine disorders, health care services, and haematological conditions. The findings offer insights into factors influencing the health of African immigrant and refugee children. Further studies, especially qualitative studies, are needed to determine barriers to service access after migration and to investigate other underexplored and overlooked health concerns of African migrant children, including pneumonia and child maltreatment

Remote sensing application in monitoring change of river and coastlines of Morong, Bataan, Philippines

Remote sensing offers fast, cheap and reliable method in detecting river and coastal changes. In this study, satellite imageries of Morong river and coastlines from 2006 to 2016 were collected and analyzed to monitor changes. Field measurements were also done using South Total Station (NTS-362R6L) in 2016 for comparison and validation of data. Results showed that the river outlet and the riverbank increased in width size due to erosion brought about by torrential rains and urban run-offs. Coastlines near the river narrowed in size or shifted landward due to coastal erosion and sea level rise. An interview was conducted to locals residing nearby the river and coast where strong typhoons were reported which cause geophysical changes in the area. The residents also observed sea level rise, coastal and river erosion which caused narrowing of the coastlines and widening of the river, respectively. Records of high tides and low tides collected were projected in annual average levels per month. The average level of low tides increased per year which can be a result of sea level rise. The computed RMSE between field and remote sensing measurements ranged from 0.1m to 0.67m which indicated positional accuracy of Google Earth in the area

Geophysical changes detection by remote sensing in Alaminos River Pangasinan, Philippines

Geophysical changes of the river outlets, riverbanks and coastlines in Alaminos, Pangasinan were measured using Google Earth from 2009 to 2014. On the other hand, actual measurements were gathered using South Total Station (NTS-362R6L) in 2015. The insights of the residents regarding feature changes of the river were obtained through one on one interview. Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were computed for measurement and horizontal positional accuracy of Google Earth. To perceive the effects of sea levels, historical data (2004-2015) from Bolinao, Philippines Tide Chart at online tides and currents predictions were also analyzed. Alaminos river outlets decreased in width size due to natural factor and human activities. Alaminos riverbank increased in width size which could be possibly due to natural calamities and weak bank resistance brought about by the frequent flooding caused by heavy rains and the emergency released of water from San Roque Dam. Generally the north and south coasts of Alaminos River increased and expanded. Rise in sea level is also a probable cause of changes wherein heights of low tides in Pangasinan Gulf is increasing overtime. The computed RMSE was low which indicate positional accuracy and measurement of Google Earth in the study area
