Fast computation of Bernoulli, Tangent and Secant numbers
We consider the computation of Bernoulli, Tangent (zag), and Secant (zig or
Euler) numbers. In particular, we give asymptotically fast algorithms for
computing the first n such numbers in O(n^2.(log n)^(2+o(1))) bit-operations.
We also give very short in-place algorithms for computing the first n Tangent
or Secant numbers in O(n^2) integer operations. These algorithms are extremely
simple, and fast for moderate values of n. They are faster and use less space
than the algorithms of Atkinson (for Tangent and Secant numbers) and Akiyama
and Tanigawa (for Bernoulli numbers).Comment: 16 pages. To appear in Computational and Analytical Mathematics

On the Effectiveness of BGP Hijackers That Evade Public Route Collectors
Routing hijack attacks have plagued the Internet for decades. After many failed mitigation attempts, recent Internet-wide BGP monitoring infrastructures relying on distributed route collection systems, called route collectors, give us hope that future monitor systems can quickly detect and ultimately mitigate hijacks. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of public route collectors with respect to future attackers deliberately engineering longer hijacks to avoid being recorded by route collectors. Our extensive simulations (and attacks we device) show that monitor-based systems may be unable to observe many carefully crafted hijacks diverting traffic from thousands of ASes. Hijackers could predict whether their attacks would propagate to some BGP feeders (i.e., monitors) of public route collectors. Then, manipulate BGP route propagation so that the attack never reaches those monitors. This observation remains true when considering plausible future Internet topologies, with more IXP links and up to 4 times more monitors peering with route collectors. We then evaluate the feasibility of performing hijacks not observed by route collectors in the real-world. We experiment with two classifiers to predict the monitors that are dangerous to report the attack to route collectors, one based on monitor proximities (i.e., shortest path lengths) and another based on Gao-Rexford routing policies. We show that a proximity-based classifier could be sufficient for the hijacker to identify all dangerous monitors for hijacks announced to peer-to-peer neighbors. For hijacks announced to transit networks, a Gao-Rexford classifier reduces wrong inferences by without introducing new misclassifications for existing dangerous monitors
Characterization of defatted products obtained from the Parmigiano–Reggiano manufacturing chain: Determination of peptides and amino acids content and study of the digestibility and bioactive properties
Parmigiano–Reggiano (PR) is a worldwide known Italian, long ripened, hard cheese. Its inclusion in the list of cheeses bearing the protected designation of origin (PDO, EU regulation 510/2006) poses restrictions to its geographic area of production and its technological characteristics. To innovate the Parmigiano–Reggiano (PR) cheese manufacturing chain from the health and nutritional point of view, the output of defatted PR is addressed. Two defatting procedures (Soxhlet, and supercritical CO2 extraction) were tested, and the obtained products were compared in the composition of their nitrogen fraction, responsible for their nutritional, organoleptic, and bioactive functions. Free amino acids were quantified, and other nitrogen compounds (peptides, proteins, and non-proteolytic aminoacyl derivatives) were identified in the extracts and the mixtures obtained after simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Moreover, antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition capacities of the digests were tested. Results obtained from the molecular and biofunctional characterization of the nitrogen fraction, show that both the defatted products keep the same nutritional properties of the whole cheese
A Semantic Grid Oriented to E-Tourism
With increasing complexity of tourism business models and tasks, there is a
clear need of the next generation e-Tourism infrastructure to support flexible
automation, integration, computation, storage, and collaboration. Currently
several enabling technologies such as semantic Web, Web service, agent and grid
computing have been applied in the different e-Tourism applications, however
there is no a unified framework to be able to integrate all of them. So this
paper presents a promising e-Tourism framework based on emerging semantic grid,
in which a number of key design issues are discussed including architecture,
ontologies structure, semantic reconciliation, service and resource discovery,
role based authorization and intelligent agent. The paper finally provides the
implementation of the framework.Comment: 12 PAGES, 7 Figure
The biocompatibility of titanium in a buffer solution: compared effects of a thin film of TiO2 deposited by MOCVD and of collagen deposited from a gel
This study aims at evaluating the biocompatibility of titanium surfaces modified according two different ways: (i) deposition of a bio-inert, thin film of rutile TiO2 by chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD), and (ii) biochemical treatment with collagen gel, in order to obtain a bio-interactive coating. Behind the comparison is the idea that either the bio-inert or the bio-active coating has specific advantages when applied to implant treatment, such as the low price of the collagen treatment for instance. The stability in buffer solution was evaluated by open circuit potential (OCP) for medium time and cyclic voltametry. The OCP stabilized after 5104 min for all the specimens except the collagen treated sample which presented a stable OCP from the first minutes. MOCVD treated samples stabilized to more electropositive values. Numeric results were statistically analysed to obtain the regression equations for long time predictable evolution. The corrosion parameters determined from cyclic curves revealed that the MOCVD treatment is an efficient way to improve corrosion resistance. Human dermal fibroblasts were selected for cell culture tests, taking into account that these cells are present in all bio-interfaces, being the main cellular type of connective tissue. The cells grew on either type of surface without phenotype modification. From the reduction of yellow, water-soluble 3-(4,5-dimethyldiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT cytotoxicity test), MOCVD treated samples offer better viability than mechanically polished Ti and collagen treated samples as well. Cell spreading, as evaluated from microscope images processed by the program Sigma Scan, showed also enhancement upon surface modification. Depending on the experimental conditions, MOCVD deposited TiO2 exhibits different nanostructures that may influence biological behaviour. The results demonstrate the capacity of integration in simulated physiologic liquids for an implant pretreated by either method
Effect of Non-Magnetic Impurities (Zn,Li) in a Hole Doped Spin-Fermion Model for Cuprates
The effect of adding non-magnetic impurities (NMI), such as Zn or Li, to
high-Tc cuprates is studied applying Monte Carlo techniques to a spin-fermion
model. It is observed that adding Li is qualitatively similar to doping with
equal percentages of Sr and Zn. The mobile holes (MH) are trapped by the NMI
and the system remains insulating and commensurate with antiferromagnetic (AF)
correlations. This behavior persists in the region %NMI > %MH. On the other
hand, when %NMI < %MH magnetic and charge incommensurabilities are observed.
The vertical or horizontal hole-rich stripes, present when % NMI=0 upon hole
doping, are pinned by the NMI and tend to become diagonal, surrounding finite
AF domains. The %MH-%NMI plane is investigated. Good agreement with
experimental results is found in the small portion of this diagram where
experimental data are available. Predictions about the expected behavior in the
remaining regions are made.Comment: Four pages with four figures embedded in tex
Economic evaluation of Medically Assisted Reproduction: An educational overview of methods and applications for healthcare professionals
Economic evaluations of the value-for-money of Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) interventions are increasingly important due to growing pressure on healthcare budgets. Although such evaluations are commonplace in the published literature, the number/methodological complexity of different evaluations available, and the challenges specific to MAR interventions, can complicate the interpretation of such analyses for fertility treatments. This article aims to serve as an educational resource and provide context on the design/interpretation of economic analyses for MAR interventions. Several areas are relevant for first-line providers and decision makers: scope of analysis, comparator used, perspective/time horizon considered, outcomes used to measure success, and how results from cost-effectiveness studies can be summarised and used in clinical practice. We aim to help clinicians better understand the strengths/weaknesses of economic analyses, to enable the best use of the evidence in practice, so resources available for MAR interventions can provide maximum value to patients and society
A link between the spin fluctuation and Fermi surface in high T_C cuprates --- A consistent description within the single-band Hubbard model
A link between the spin fluctuation and the "fermiology" is explored for the
single-band Hubbard model within the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximation.
We show that the experimentally observed peak position of the spin structure in
the high T_C cuprates can be understood from the model that reproduces the
experimentally observed Fermi surface. In particular, both the variation of the
incommensurability of the peak in the spin structure and the evolution of the
Fermi surface with hole doping in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 may be understood with a
second nearest neighbor hopping decreasing with hole doping.Comment: 5 pages, RevTeX, uses epsf.sty and multicol.st
Reply to Comment on "Competition between helimagnetism and commensurate quantum spin correlations in LiCu2O2"
Exchanged interactions in recently observed helical structure in LiCu2O2 is
probed by inelastic neutron scattering. The main conlusions of Refs. [1,2] are
confirmed: nn interactions in single chains are ferromagnetic and frustrated by
nnn antiferromagnetic ones. However, in apparent disagreement with Refs. [1,2]
double-chain interactions are found to be of the same order of magnitude as the
single-chain ones, and thus involved in the frustration mechanism.

Charge-based silicon quantum computer architectures using controlled single-ion implantation
We report a nanofabrication, control and measurement scheme for charge-based
silicon quantum computing which utilises a new technique of controlled single
ion implantation. Each qubit consists of two phosphorus dopant atoms ~50 nm
apart, one of which is singly ionized. The lowest two energy states of the
remaining electron form the logical states. Surface electrodes control the
qubit using voltage pulses and dual single electron transistors operating near
the quantum limit provide fast readout with spurious signal rejection. A low
energy (keV) ion beam is used to implant the phosphorus atoms in high-purity
Si. Single atom control during the implantation is achieved by monitoring
on-chip detector electrodes, integrated within the device structure, while
positional accuracy is provided by a nanomachined resist mask. We describe a
construction process for implanted single atom and atom cluster devices with
all components registered to better than 20 nm, together with electrical
characterisation of the readout circuitry. We also discuss universal one- and
two-qubit gate operations for this architecture, providing a possible path
towards quantum computing in silicon.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
