The aim of the research was to explore the space-time structure of homogeneous turbulence by computing and then interpreting the two-point spectra and correlations of the velocity and pressure fields. Many of these statistics are of considerable practical importance. In particular, it is of interest to compare the different time and length integral scales and microscales for Eulerian and Lagrangian qualities, and to compare the space and time spectra
Wave-number Selection by Target Patterns and Side Walls in Rayleigh-Benard Convection
We present experimental results for Rayleigh-Benard convection patterns in a
cylindrical container with static side-wall forcing induced by a heater. This
forcing stabilized a pattern of concentric rolls (a target pattern) with the
central roll (the umbilicus) at the center of the cell after a jump from the
conduction to the convection state. A quasi-static increase of the control
parameter (epsilon) beyond 0.8 caused the umbilicus of the pattern to move off
center. As observed by others, a further quasi-static increase of epsilon up to
15.6 caused a sequence of transitions. Each transition began with the
displacement of the umbilicus and then proceeded with the loss of one
convection roll at the umbilicus and the return of the umbilicus to a location
near the center of the cell. Alternatively, with decreasing epsilon new rolls
formed at the umbilicus but large umbilicus displacements did not occur. In
addition to quantitative measurements of the umbilicus displacement, we
determined and analyzed the entire wave-director field of each image. The wave
numbers varied in the axial direction, with minima at the umbilicus and at the
cell wall and a maximum at a radial position close to 2/3 Gamma. The wave
numbers at the maximum showed hysteretic jumps at the transitions, but on
average agreed well with the theoretical predictions for the wave numbers

Room temperature electron spin coherence in telecom-wavelength quaternary quantum wells
Time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy is used to monitor the room
temperature electron spin dynamics of optical telecommunication wavelength
AlInGaAs multiple quantum wells lattice-matched to InP. We found that electron
spin coherence times and effective g-factors vary as a function of aluminum
concentration. The measured electron spin coherence times of these multiple
quantum wells, with wavelengths ranging from 1.26 microns to 1.53 microns,
reach approximately 100 ps at room temperature, and the measured electron
effective g-factors are in the range from -2.3 to -1.1.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Restoration of Sp4 in Forebrain GABAergic Neurons Rescues Hypersensitivity to Ketamine in Sp4 Hypomorphic Mice.
BackgroundKetamine produces schizophrenia-like behavioral phenotypes in healthy people. Prolonged ketamine effects and exacerbation of symptoms after the administration of ketamine have been observed in patients with schizophrenia. More recently, ketamine has been used as a potent antidepressant to treat patients with major depression. The genes and neurons that regulate behavioral responses to ketamine, however, remain poorly understood. Sp4 is a transcription factor for which gene expression is restricted to neuronal cells in the brain. Our previous studies demonstrated that Sp4 hypomorphic mice display several behavioral phenotypes relevant to psychiatric disorders, consistent with human SP4 gene associations with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Among those behavioral phenotypes, hypersensitivity to ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion has been observed in Sp4 hypomorphic mice.MethodsIn the present study, we used the Cre-LoxP system to restore Sp4 gene expression, specifically in either forebrain excitatory or GABAergic inhibitory neurons in Sp4 hypomorphic mice. Mouse behavioral phenotypes related to psychiatric disorders were examined in these distinct rescue mice.ResultsRestoration of Sp4 in forebrain excitatory neurons did not rescue deficient sensorimotor gating nor ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion. Restoration of Sp4 in forebrain GABAergic neurons, however, rescued ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion, but did not rescue deficient sensorimotor gating.ConclusionsOur studies suggest that the Sp4 gene in forebrain GABAergic neurons regulates ketamine-induced hyperlocomotion

Concrete Formwork Simulator is a simulation game meant to help construction students practice their skills. The goal of the game is to successfully build concrete formwork with the least amount of wasted materials. Players are scored out of 400 on each of the individual stages: shop, cut, and assemble. Players choose between building a formwork for a column, a slab, and a wall. Each formwork has its own set of materials for the players to buy, cut, and assemble. The player will need to take the dimensions of the formwork into account and then calculate the minimum number of each piece of lumber they will need to buy. Then, while considering minimizing waste, they need to calculate if any pieces need to be cut, and how much to cut them. Finally, the Player moves to the assembly where they are instructed to build the formwork of their choice. They must follow the correct order of assembly and build the sections of the formwork in the correct order to receive full points for the assembly stage. If they have done everything correctly, they will receive a perfect score of 1200 for that formwork
