The case of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Suka Damai Village Tebo districtJambi province in 2008 showed that, from 33 cases, six of them were hospitalized. This study was to determine peopleā€™s behavior in the Mosquito Eradication Project and the influencing factors. This study used a cross-sectional approach. The targetpopulation was the head of the family in the village. The research sample was 110 households selected by a multistage random sampling. The data were collected using a questionnaire. Data statistical tests used univariate analysis and bivariate analysis to test Chi-square. There was no significant relationship between education p=0.078, whereas there was a significant relationship between knowledge of dengue fever (p=0.001), learning about the mosquito eradication (p = 0.001), as well as behavior society toward the mosquito eradication (p = 0.001). Suggestion for the community is to pay more attention to the activities and the implementation of the mosquito eradication. Keywords: DHF, mosquito eradication, behavior societ

Acute Respiratory Infections in Informal Footwear Workers

Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) were the most common diseases among informal workers attending the Ciomas Puskesmas (Public Health Centre), Bogor Regency in 2014. Commonly, these infections had occurred because of a lack of knowledge of both ARIs and industrial hygiene in the informal sector. This study aimed to describe the relationship between knowledge and awareness of ARIs (smoking habit and using PPE during work variables) and the incidence of ARIs. The population of study comprised seven footwear workshops in Pagelaran Village, Ciomas District, Bogor Regency. They employed 87 workers in 2014 and all workers were included in the sample of the study. To explore the association between awareness of ARIs and occupational health issues, we used the chi-square test. The study showed that there were 34 (40%) workers who suffered from ARIs. 56 (66%) were smokers, 65 (76%) employees did not use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during work, and 75 (88%) workers reported that they did not have knowledge concerning ARIs. Overall, the incidence of ARIs was not significantly associated with a smoking habit (P=1.000), PPE compliance (P=1.000), or knowledge of ARIs (P=0.512). Keywords: Acute Respiratory Infections, occupational health, Personal Protection Equipment, knowledge, smoking habit

Seleksi Galur Lactobacillus Plantarum Untuk Inokulum Pada Pembuatan Silase

Eleven strains of Lactobacillus plantarum have been evaluated for their growth rate and ability to reduce pH during corn ensiling. Ensiling was carried out in small scale using plastic bag for 14 days. Soluble carbohydrate consumption, organic acids production and pH reduction were measured during fermentation. The growth rate of each strain was also determined in liquid medium. All of the 11 strains of L. plantarum tested were able to improve the ensiling process. However, strains T-16, T-25 and S-98 grew in liquid medium faster than the others, and were able to reduce pH of silage quicker than the other strains. The pH of silage inoculated with strain T-16, T-25 and S-98 decreased from about 5.60 to 4.23, 4.45 and 4.40, respectively, in two days, and to 3.98, 4.05 and 4.03, respectively, after 14 days fermentation. The acetic acid content of silages inoculated with those strains was low. Strains T-16 and T-25 were suitable as potential silage inoculants and their characteristics were comparable to the one isolated from a commercial silage inoculant
