    Australian women's prediagnostic values and influencing sociodemographic variables relating to treatment choices for early breast cancer treatment

    Women are often asked by their doctors to choose their preferred treatment for early breast cancer. Evidence shows that many women are distressed and confused about how to make this treatment decision and frequently seek help from nurses. Very little is known about women's value-centred decision-making in relation to selecting treatment for breast cancer and for nurses it is difficult to know how to assist these women with this process. In this study, 377 women participated prior to undergoing routine mammography screening and the data were collected using the Pre-Decision Portfolio Questionnaire (PDPQ) by Pierce 1. The partipants identified that expected treatment outcomes were the most important factor in choosing early breast cancer treatment. The majority reported that it was very important that a treatment would reduce the chances the cancer would return (95.6%), increase the length of their life (82.1%) and lead them to being healthy (80.4%). In addition, the participants indicated that it was important, or very important, that the emotional consequences of the treatment did "not make you depressed" (88.6%) or "sad" (90.4%) and should "keep you from worrying" (97%) and "give you peace of mind" (98.6%). Other factors, such as treatment's side effects, were identified as less important. Age, employment, education and having a family history of breast cancer were found to be significant influencing variables on the values of the participants. It was concluded that assessing and understanding the treatment values of women can help nurses focus on areas of importance to the woman and lead to informed decision-making when they are choosing treatment for early breast cancer

    Impacts Of The Aggregate Economic And Financial Conditions On Output In An Emerging Economy

    This study formulates the theoretical model based on the money market equilibrium, the goods market equilibrium, and an augmented aggregate supply function. The sample ranges from 1996.Q1 to 2009.Q3 and has 55 observations. Applying the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) model, this paper finds that Brazil’s real GDP is positively impacted by real M2 money supply, the real stock price, world output and the expected inflation rate and is negatively influenced by the government deficit as a percent of GDP, the real BRL/USD exchange rate and the U.S. Treasury bill rate. The first and third quarters exhibit seasonal effects. Therefore, expansionary monetary policy is more effective than deficit-financed expansionary fiscal policy, and pursuing real appreciation, promoting a robust stock market, and maintaining a strong world economy will benefit the Brazilian economy

    Inflammasome-induced extracellular vesicles harbour distinct RNA signatures and alter bystander macrophage responses

    Infectious organisms and damage of cells can activate inflammasomes, which mediate tissue inflammation and adaptive immunity. These mechanisms evolved to curb the spread of microbes and to induce repair of the damaged tissue. Chronic activation of inflammasomes, however, contributes to non-resolving inflammatory responses that lead to immuno-pathologies. Inflammasome-activated cells undergo an inflammatory cell death associated with the release of potent pro-inflammatory cytokines and poorly characterized extracellular vesicles (EVs). Since inflammasome-induced EVs could signal inflammasome pathway activation in patients with chronic inflammation and modulate bystander cell activation, we performed a systems analysis of the ribonucleic acid (RNA) content and function of two EV classes. We show that EVs released from inflammasome-activated macrophages carry a specific RNA signature and contain interferon beta (IFNbeta). EV-associated IFNbeta induces an interferon signature in bystander cells and results in dampening of NLRP3 inflammasome responses. EVs could, therefore, serve as biomarkers for inflammasome activation and act to prevent systemic hyper-inflammatory states by restricting NLRP3 activation in bystander cells

    Temporal indentations are the most impacting craniofacial complication after coronal flap dissection. It is mainly due to a temporal fat pad or temporalis muscle dissection. Because of the great improvements achieved recently in CAD-CAM-aided surgery and the possibility of performing accurate pre-surgical virtual planning, it is now possible to correct it with a customised virtual approach. Furthermore, advancements in material science have allowed surgeons to rely on biocompatible materials like PEEK (showing a low complication and recurrence rate) for the manufacturing of patient-specific implants. We hereby describe our experience on a case of secondary and corrective surgery after a fronto-orbital remodelling, in which we used PEEK implants designed by CAD and optimized by finite element modelling

    Falsification Of The Atmospheric CO2 Greenhouse Effects Within The Frame Of Physics

    The atmospheric greenhouse effect, an idea that many authors trace back to the traditional works of Fourier (1824), Tyndall (1861), and Arrhenius (1896), and which is still supported in global climatology, essentially describes a fictitious mechanism, in which a planetary atmosphere acts as a heat pump driven by an environment that is radiatively interacting with but radiatively equilibrated to the atmospheric system. According to the second law of thermodynamics such a planetary machine can never exist. Nevertheless, in almost all texts of global climatology and in a widespread secondary literature it is taken for granted that such mechanism is real and stands on a firm scientific foundation. In this paper the popular conjecture is analyzed and the underlying physical principles are clarified. By showing that (a) there are no common physical laws between the warming phenomenon in glass houses and the fictitious atmospheric greenhouse effects, (b) there are no calculations to determine an average surface temperature of a planet, (c) the frequently mentioned difference of 33 degrees Celsius is a meaningless number calculated wrongly, (d) the formulas of cavity radiation are used inappropriately, (e) the assumption of a radiative balance is unphysical, (f) thermal conductivity and friction must not be set to zero, the atmospheric greenhouse conjecture is falsified.Comment: 115 pages, 32 figures, 13 tables (some typos corrected

    Gliders2d: Source Code Base for RoboCup 2D Soccer Simulation League

    We describe Gliders2d, a base code release for Gliders, a soccer simulation team which won the RoboCup Soccer 2D Simulation League in 2016. We trace six evolutionary steps, each of which is encapsulated in a sequential change of the released code, from v1.1 to v1.6, starting from agent2d-3.1.1 (set as the baseline v1.0). These changes improve performance by adjusting the agents' stamina management, their pressing behaviour and the action-selection mechanism, as well as their positional choice in both attack and defense, and enabling riskier passes. The resultant behaviour, which is sufficiently generic to be applicable to physical robot teams, increases the players' mobility and achieves a better control of the field. The last presented version, Gliders2d-v1.6, approaches the strength of Gliders2013, and outperforms agent2d-3.1.1 by four goals per game on average.
