A new test procedure to validate tensile dynamic mechanical properties of sheet metals and alloys in automotive crash applications
A thin walled open channel beam subjected to a 3-point bend and constant velocity boundary condition is investigated to establish its potential to validate material performance for automotive crash applications. Specifically quantitative validation of material data determined from high speed tensile testing and qualitative validation of material resistance to fracture in crash components. Open channel beams are fabricated from structural grade sheet steel and aluminium alloy and tested at quasi-static and higher speeds up to 10 m/s and in all cases, deformation develops a plastic hinge. This paper describes development of the validation test procedure, specifically design of specimen, system of measurement and boundary conditions using numerical and experimental techniques. The new test procedure will increase confidence in materials modelling and reduce the risk to introduce new advanced high strength materials into automotive crash structures
Modelling self-piercing riveted joint failures in automotive crash structures
This paper describes a new model and method to predict Self-Piercing Riveted (SPR) joint interlock failures in aluminium sheet at crash speeds using explicit finite element simulation. SPR interlock failure is dependent on rivet direction, which is included in the model. A mesh independent approach is adopted for connection model which is capable of industrial application at the full vehicle crash analysis level. The paper provides an overview of the approach to validate connection model; typically by developing detailed physics based models of various joint configurations supported with high speed experimental data, through to model capable of industrial application. The framework to validate connection model for use in crash simulation tools is expected to have broader applicatio

A thin-wall open channel beam, fabricated from high strength Dual Phase sheet steel, subjected to 3-point bending and constant velocity boundary condition, is investigated to validate material performance for automotive crash applications. Specifically quantitative validation of material tensile data determined from high speed tests and component models, and qualitative validation of materials resistance to fracture. The open channel beam is subjected to quasi-static and increasing loading speed and in all cases, large displacement in which deformation involves formation of a plastic hinge. This paper describes development of test procedure, notably beam specimen design, measurement system and boundary conditions, using both experimental and numerical techniques. The new test procedure, as a compliment to crush testing, will increase confidence in the modeling and application of new advanced higher strength materials in automotive crash structure
Classical stability of U(1)_A domain walls in dense matter QCD
It was recently shown that there exists metastable U(1)_A domain wall
configurations in high-density QCD (\mu >> 1 GeV). In the following we will
assess the stability of such non-trivial field configurations at intermediate
densities (\mu < 1 GeV). The existence of such configurations at intermediate
densities could have interesting consequences for the physics of neutron stars

Harnack inequality and regularity for degenerate quasilinear elliptic equations
We prove Harnack inequality and local regularity results for weak solutions
of a quasilinear degenerate equation in divergence form under natural growth
conditions. The degeneracy is given by a suitable power of a strong
weight. Regularity results are achieved under minimal assumptions on the
coefficients and, as an application, we prove local estimates
for solutions of a degenerate equation in non divergence form
A geological model of the chalk of East Kent
This report describes the geological modelling of the Chalk in the North Downs of East Kent,
within the catchment of River Great Stour and eastwards to the coast, including the Isle of
Thanet. This work was funded by the Environment Agency to support investigations of the local
hydrogeology and thereby to enhance catchment management.
The whole area is underlain by the Upper Cretaceous Chalk Group, with the Palaeogene
succession of the Thanet Sand Formation, the Lambeth Group and the Thames Group overlying
it in the northern and central eastern parts.
The project included a desk study revision of the Chalk of the North Downs, using the new
Chalk lithostratigraphy. The revisions to the geology are shown on the 1:50 000 scale geological
map which accompanies this report. Together with evidence from boreholes and from seismic
surveys, the new outcrop patterns have been incorporated into a geological model, using both
computer software (EarthVision) and manual methods.
The introduction describes the background to the project. The second chapter describes the
sources for the data used in the model: published and unpublished geological maps, borehole
records (both lithological and geophysical), seismic surveys, biostratigraphic records, digital
topographic information, and the published literature.
Each Chalk formation present in the area is then briefly described in the third chapter, noting its
relationship to the older lithostratigraphic divisions, and to biostratigraphic zones. The local
Chalk succession extends from the base of the Chalk Group to the Newhaven Chalk Formation,
here represented by the Margate Chalk Member. Evidence for the thickness of each formation is
reviewed.
The early Palaeogene formations (the Thanet Sand, Upnor, Harwich and London Clay
formations) are also briefly described (Chapter 4) and the local superficial deposits mentioned,
with references to detailed descriptions (Chapter 5). Apart from minor adjustments to the outcrop
of the basal Palaeogene surface, no revision of these formations was done for this study
New evidence for strong nonthermal effects in Tycho's supernova remnant
For the case of Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) we present the relation
between the blast wave and contact discontinuity radii calculated within the
nonlinear kinetic theory of cosmic ray (CR) acceleration in SNRs. It is
demonstrated that these radii are confirmed by recently published Chandra
measurements which show that the observed contact discontinuity radius is so
close to the shock radius that it can only be explained by efficient CR
acceleration which in turn makes the medium more compressible. Together with
the recently determined new value erg of the SN
explosion energy this also confirms our previous conclusion that a TeV
gamma-ray flux of erg/(cms) is to be expected from
Tycho's SNR. Chandra measurements and the HEGRA upper limit of the TeV

Indirect Dark Matter Detection from Dwarf Satellites: Joint Expectations from Astrophysics and Supersymmetry
We present a general methodology for determining the gamma-ray flux from
annihilation of dark matter particles in Milky Way satellite galaxies, focusing
on two promising satellites as examples: Segue 1 and Draco. We use the
SuperBayeS code to explore the best-fitting regions of the Constrained Minimal
Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM) parameter space, and an independent MCMC
analysis of the dark matter halo properties of the satellites using published
radial velocities. We present a formalism for determining the boost from halo
substructure in these galaxies and show that its value depends strongly on the
extrapolation of the concentration-mass (c(M)) relation for CDM subhalos down
to the minimum possible mass. We show that the preferred region for this
minimum halo mass within the CMSSM with neutralino dark matter is ~10^-9-10^-6
solar masses. For the boost model where the observed power-law c(M) relation is
extrapolated down to the minimum halo mass we find average boosts of about 20,
while the Bullock et al (2001) c(M) model results in boosts of order unity. We
estimate that for the power-law c(M) boost model and photon energies greater
than a GeV, the Fermi space-telescope has about 20% chance of detecting a dark
matter annihilation signal from Draco with signal-to-noise greater than 3 after
about 5 years of observation
Circulating pancreatic polypeptide concentrations predict visceral and liver fat content
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: No current biomarker can reliably predict visceral and liver fat content, both of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Vagal tone has been suggested to influence regional fat deposition. Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) is secreted from the endocrine pancreas under vagal control. We investigated the utility of PP in predicting visceral and liver fat.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fasting plasma PP concentrations were measured in 104 overweight and obese subjects (46 men and 58 women). In the same subjects, total and regional adipose tissue, including total visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and total subcutaneous adipose tissue (TSAT), were measured using whole-body magnetic resonance imaging. Intrahepatocellular lipid content (IHCL) was quantified by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
RESULTS: Fasting plasma PP concentrations positively and significantly correlated with both VAT (r = 0.57, P < .001) and IHCL (r = 0.51, P < .001), but not with TSAT (r = 0.02, P = .88). Fasting PP concentrations independently predicted VAT after controlling for age and sex. Fasting PP concentrations independently predicted IHCL after controlling for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, homeostatic model assessment 2-insulin resistance, (HOMA2-IR) and serum concentrations of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Fasting PP concentrations were associated with serum ALT, TG, TC, low- and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and blood pressure (P < .05). These associations were mediated by IHCL and/or VAT. Fasting PP and HOMA2-IR were independently significantly associated with hepatic steatosis (P < .01).
CONCLUSIONS: Pancreatic polypeptide is a novel predictor of visceral and liver fat content, and thus a potential biomarker for cardiovascular risk stratification and targeted treatment of patients with ectopic fat deposition
Balloon Measurements of Cosmic Ray Muon Spectra in the Atmosphere along with those of Primary Protons and Helium Nuclei over Mid-Latitude
We report here the measurements of the energy spectra of atmospheric muons
and of the cosmic ray primary proton and helium nuclei in a single experiment.
These were carried out using the MASS superconducting spectrometer in a balloon
flight experiment in 1991. The relevance of these results to the atmospheric
neutrino anomaly is emphasized. In particular, this approach allows
uncertainties caused by the level of solar modulation, the geomagnetic cut-off
of the primaries and possible experimental systematics to be decoupled in the
comparison of calculated fluxes of muons to measured muon fluxes. The muon
observations cover the momentum and depth ranges of 0.3-40 GeV/c and 5-886
g/cmsquared, respectively. The proton and helium primary measurements cover the
rigidity range from 3 to 100 GV, in which both the solar modulation and the
geomagnetic cut-off affect the energy spectra at low energies.Comment: 31 pages, including 17 figures, simplified apparatus figure, to
