    Working with Your Employees to Move Through Change Using Communication and Motivation: A Case Study

    This thesis focuses on effecting change in a government agency by the use of communication, motivation through incentives, and other management tools. The United States Army Reserve Personnel Center (ARPERCEN) manages, trains, and mobilizes Army personnel. Its largest directorate is the Personnel Records Management Directorate, which houses the Accessions Division. At least 200,000 hard-copy personnel records pass through the Division for verification and processing in a typical year. Eighty percent of hard-copy records transferred to ARPERCEN were also transferred electronically; however all were band-processed as if new. This entire accessioning process was redundant and inefficient. Change was coming. The Reserve Database Maintenance System (RDMS) was created, allowing on-line real-time add, delete and update capabilities to the new database, Total Army Personnel Data.Base - Reserve. Could the author motivate the Accessions Division to become efficient under the new system? In July 1993, ARPERCEN top management stated RDMS would come online 1 November. The author decided to keep his staff informed of RDMS-related effects and to coordinate working-environment changes with union representatives. The author rejected the train-the-trainers approach top ARPERCEN management supported. His staff members were barely computer literate; he had no one qualified to conduct such training. The author created a worksheet showing data fields exactly as the data-entry screens. After two days of general keyboard training, employees brought records from their work areas, entered required codes on the worksheet, and entered data into the system exactly as would be do.ne during production mode. When RDMS was brought on-line, the Accessions Clerks were ready. The author used words of praise and MoonPies Âź to motivate his staff until a monetary bonus plan could be designed and implemented. The Accessions Division reduced their backlog of records from 55,000 in April 1994 to 17,000 in July, an interval of just 90 days

    Learning Design: reflections on a snapshot of the current landscape

    The mounting wealth of open and readily available information and the swift evolution of social, mobile and creative technologies warrant a re-conceptualisation of the role of educators: from providers of knowledge to designers of learning. This need is being addressed by a growing trend of research in Learning Design. Responding to this trend, the Art and Science of Learning Design workshop brought together leading voices in the field and provided a forum for discussing its key issues. It focused on three thematic axes: practices and methods, tools and resources, and theoretical frameworks. This paper reviews some definitions of Learning Design and then summarises the main contributions to the workshop. Drawing upon these, we identify three key challenges for Learning Design that suggest directions for future research

    alpha-nucleus potentials are one important ingredient for the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy neutron-deficient p nuclei in the astrophysical gamma-process where these p nuclei are produced by a series of (gamma,n), (gamma,p), and (gamma,alpha) reactions. I present an improved alpha-nucleus potential at the astrophysically relevant sub-Coulomb energies which is derived from the analysis of alpha decay data and from a previously established systematic behavior of double-folding potentials.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Effects of pore modification on the templating of guest molecules in a 2D honeycomb network

    This work was supported by the UK Engineering Physical Sciences Research Council (EPRSC) and the EU.1,7-Diadamantanethioperylene-3,4:9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide, (Ad-S)(2)-PTCDI, adsorbed on Au (111) from solution was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). (Ad-S)(2)-PTCDI forms a well-ordered monolayer whose structure is described by a (2 root 63 x root 19) R19.1 degrees chiral unit cell containing four molecules. Codeposition of (Ad-S)(2)-PTCDI with 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine (melamine) yields a honeycomb network whose (7 root 3 x 7 root 3)R30 degrees unit cell is identical to the unsubstituted PTCDI/melamine analogue. The effect of the adamantyl thioether moieties on the adsorption of guest molecules is investigated using adamantane thiol and C-60. While the thioether units do not affect the packing of adamantane thiol molecules a pronounced influence is seen in the case of fullerene. Pore modification involving different combinations of enantiomers of (Ad-S)(2)-PTCDI give rise to distinctly different arrangements of C-60 molecules. The diversity of patterns is further increased by the presence of unsubstituted PTCDI molecules.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Large scale Gd-beta-diketonate based organic liquid scintillator production for antineutrino detection

    Over the course of several decades, organic liquid scintillators have formed the basis for successful neutrino detectors. Gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillators provide efficient background suppression for electron antineutrino detection at nuclear reactor plants. In the Double Chooz reactor antineutrino experiment, a newly developed beta-diketonate gadolinium-loaded scintillator is utilized for the first time. Its large scale production and characterization are described. A new, light yield matched metal-free companion scintillator is presented. Both organic liquids comprise the target and "Gamma Catcher" of the Double Chooz detectors.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures, 5 table

    Recent measurements on dendrochronologically-dated wood from the Southern Hemisphere have shown that there are differences between the structural form of the radiocarbon calibration curves from each hemisphere. Thus, it is desirable, when possible, to use calibration data obtained from secure dendrochronologically-dated wood from the corresponding hemisphere. In this paper, we outline the recent work and point the reader to the internationally recommended data set that should be used for future calibration of Southern Hemisphere Âč⁎C dates
