Stochastic Budget Optimization in Internet Advertising
Internet advertising is a sophisticated game in which the many advertisers
"play" to optimize their return on investment. There are many "targets" for the
advertisements, and each "target" has a collection of games with a potentially
different set of players involved. In this paper, we study the problem of how
advertisers allocate their budget across these "targets". In particular, we
focus on formulating their best response strategy as an optimization problem.
Advertisers have a set of keywords ("targets") and some stochastic information
about the future, namely a probability distribution over scenarios of cost vs
click combinations. This summarizes the potential states of the world assuming
that the strategies of other players are fixed. Then, the best response can be
abstracted as stochastic budget optimization problems to figure out how to
spread a given budget across these keywords to maximize the expected number of
clicks.
We present the first known non-trivial poly-logarithmic approximation for
these problems as well as the first known hardness results of getting better
than logarithmic approximation ratios in the various parameters involved. We
also identify several special cases of these problems of practical interest,
such as with fixed number of scenarios or with polynomial-sized parameters
related to cost, which are solvable either in polynomial time or with improved
approximation ratios. Stochastic budget optimization with scenarios has
sophisticated technical structure. Our approximation and hardness results come
from relating these problems to a special type of (0/1, bipartite) quadratic
programs inherent in them. Our research answers some open problems raised by
the authors in (Stochastic Models for Budget Optimization in Search-Based
Advertising, Algorithmica, 58 (4), 1022-1044, 2010).Comment: FINAL versio
Algebraic approach to quantum field theory on a class of noncommutative curved spacetimes
In this article we study the quantization of a free real scalar field on a
class of noncommutative manifolds, obtained via formal deformation quantization
using triangular Drinfel'd twists. We construct deformed quadratic action
functionals and compute the corresponding equation of motion operators. The
Green's operators and the fundamental solution of the deformed equation of
motion are obtained in terms of formal power series. It is shown that, using
the deformed fundamental solution, we can define deformed *-algebras of field
observables, which in general depend on the spacetime deformation parameter.
This dependence is absent in the special case of Killing deformations, which
include in particular the Moyal-Weyl deformation of the Minkowski spacetime.Comment: LaTeX 14 pages, no figures, svjour3.cls style; v2: clarifications and

Polo-like kinase 1 siRNA-607 induces mitotic arrest and apoptosis in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells
Polo-like kinase (Plk) 1 is overexpressed in many human malignancies including nasopharyngeal carcinoma, indicating its potential as a therapeutic target. Recently, using a simple cellular morphologybased strategy, we have identified several novel effective siRNAs against Plk1 including Plk1 siRNA- 607. In this study, we further investigated the effects of Plk1 siRNA-607 in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, HNE-1. Real time RT-PCR and Western blot indicated that Plk1 siRNA-607 transfection resulted in a significant inhibition in Plk1 expression in the HNE-1 cells. Furthermore, cell cycle, cell growth and apoptosis analysis clearly indicated that Plk1 siRNA-607 caused a dramatic mitotic cell cycle arrest followed by massive apoptotic cell death, and eventually resulted in a significant decrease in growth and viability of the nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. Given that Plk1 has been widely accepted as a novel efficient target for cancer therapy, these results suggested that Plk1 siRNA-607 could be further developed for the treatment of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma.Key words: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Plk1, RNA silencing, cell cycle, apoptosis
Scalar field propagation in the phi^4 kappa-Minkowski model
In this article we use the noncommutative (NC) kappa-Minkowski phi^4 model
based on the kappa-deformed star product, ({*}_h). The action is modified by
expanding up to linear order in the kappa-deformation parameter a, producing an
effective model on commutative spacetime. For the computation of the tadpole
diagram contributions to the scalar field propagation/self-energy, we
anticipate that statistics on the kappa-Minkowski is specifically
kappa-deformed. Thus our prescription in fact represents hybrid approach
between standard quantum field theory (QFT) and NCQFT on the kappa-deformed
Minkowski spacetime, resulting in a kappa-effective model. The propagation is
analyzed in the framework of the two-point Green's function for low,
intermediate, and for the Planckian propagation energies, respectively.
Semiclassical/hybrid behavior of the first order quantum correction do show up
due to the kappa-deformed momentum conservation law. For low energies, the
dependence of the tadpole contribution on the deformation parameter a drops out
completely, while for Planckian energies, it tends to a fixed finite value. The
mass term of the scalar field is shifted and these shifts are very different at
different propagation energies. At the Planckian energies we obtain the
direction dependent kappa-modified dispersion relations. Thus our
kappa-effective model for the massive scalar field shows a birefringence
effect.Comment: 23 pages, 2 figures; To be published in JHEP. Minor typos corrected.

Exciton entanglement in two coupled semiconductor microcrystallites
Entanglement of the excitonic states in the system of two coupled
semiconductor microcrystallites, whose sizes are much larger than the Bohr
radius of exciton in bulk semiconductor but smaller than the relevant optical
wavelength, is quantified in terms of the entropy of entanglement. It is
observed that the nonlinear interaction between excitons increases the maximum
values of the entropy of the entanglement more than that of the linear coupling
model. Therefore, a system of two coupled microcrystallites can be used as a
good source of entanglement with fixed exciton number. The relationship between
the entropy of the entanglement and the population imbalance of two
microcrystallites is numerically shown and the uppermost envelope function for
them is estimated by applying the Jaynes principle.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure
The effect of e-cigarettes on smoking cessation and cigarette smoking initiation: An evidence-based rapid review and meta-analysis.
The contribution made by e-cigarettes to smoking cessation continues to be controversial. Reports suggest that teenagers are becoming increasingly addicted to e-cigarettes and that e-cigarette use in adolescents is associated with subsequent cigarette smoking. Systematic searches of eleven databases were conducted (January 2015 to June 2020). Systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies comparing e-cigarettes with placebo e-cigarettes, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or no e-cigarette use were included. The two primary outcomes were smoking cessation among smokers and smoking initiation among non-smoking teenagers. The secondary outcome was adverse events. Data were synthesized using risk ratio (RR) or adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Six systematic reviews, 5 RCTs and 24 cohort studies were identified. For smoking cessation, findings from 4 systematic reviews indicated that e-cigarettes contributed to cessation while one found the opposite. Meta-analysis of 5 RCTs suggested that e-cigarettes were superior to NRT or placebo for smoking cessation (RR=1.55; 95% CI: 1.00-2.40; I =57.6%; low certainty; 5 trials, n=4025). Evidence from 9 cohort studies showed that e-cigarette use was not associated with cessation (AOR=1.16; 95% CI: 0.88-1.54; I =69.0%; n=22220). Subgroup analysis suggested that intensive e-cigarette use may be associated with cessation. In terms of smoking initiation, adolescents who ever used e-cigarettes had a greater risk for smoking initiation than non-users (AOR=2.91; 95% CI: 2.61-3.23; I =61.0%; 15 trials, n=68943), the findings were consistent with one included systematic review. No serious adverse events were reported in the included studies. Low certainty evidence suggests that e-cigarettes appear to be potentially effective for smoking cessation. The use of e-cigarettes in adolescents may be associated with smoking initiation. No serious adverse events were reported. [Abstract copyright: © 2021 Zhang Y.Y. et al.

Connection between Damping Torque Analysis and Energy Flow Analysis in Damping Performance Evaluation for Electromechanical Oscillations in Power Systems
© Copyright 2021 The Author(s). The damping performance evaluation for electro-mechanical oscillations in power systems is crucial for the stable operation of modern power systems. In this paper, the connection between two commonly-used damping performance evaluation methods, i.e., the damping torque analysis (DTA) and energy flow analysis (EFA), are systematically examined and revealed for the better understanding of the oscillatory damping mechanism. First, a concept of the aggregated damping torque coefficient is proposed and derived based on DTA of multi-machine power systems, which can characterize the integration effect of the damping contribution from the whole power system. Then, the pre-processing of measurements at the terminal of a local generator is conducted for EFA, and a concept of the frequency-decomposed energy attenuation coefficient is defined to screen the damping contribution with respect to the interested frequency. On this basis, the frequency spectrum analysis of the energy attenuation coefficient is employed to rigorously prove that the results of DTA and EFA are essentially equivalent, which is valid for arbitrary types of synchronous generator models in multi-machine power systems. Additionally, the consistency between the aggregated damping torque coefficient and frequency-decomposed energy attenuation coefficient is further verified by the numerical calculation in case studies. The relationship between the proposed coefficients and the eigenvalue (or damping ratio) is finally revealed, which consolidates the application of the proposed concepts in the damping performance evaluation.10.13039/501100001809-National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant Number: 51807171);

Improvement of light intensity and efficiency of n-ZnO/NiO/p-GaN heterojunction-based white light emitting diodes using micro-/nanolens array
Our study proposes a technique to enhance light extraction efficiency of light emitting diodes (LEDs) by incorporating various micro-/nanolens arrays (MNLAs) on the substrate layer, which in turn increases the external quantum efficiency (EQE) of the LEDs. To simulate the LEDs, we utilized the finite difference time domain method. To achieve a white LED, we inserted a thin layer of NiO at the interface between the n-type ZnO and the p-type GaN. The basic n-ZnO/NiO/p-GaN heterojunction-based LED exhibited an EQE of 10.99% where the effective refractive index of the LED structure was 1.48. The EQE was further increased by engraving various planoconvex or planoconcave MNLA on the top surface of the substrate layer. A maximum EQE of 12.4% was achieved for convex-1 type (lens height of 0.5  μm and radius of 0.4  μm) elliptical lens engraved LED where the effective refractive index was 1.4. In addition, the peak electroluminescence (EL) light intensity of convex-1 lens-based LED was twice than the light intensity observed in basic LED. Because of excellent EL spectrum and significant amount of light throughout the visible spectrum, the proposed convex-1 structure-based LED can be considered as a prospective candidate for white LED
Effect of two bands on critical fields in MgB2 thin films with various resistivity values
Upper critical fields of four MgB2 thin films were measured up to 28 Tesla at
Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory. The films were grown by Pulsed Laser
Deposition and showed critical temperatures ranging between 29.5 and 38.8 K and
resistivities at 40 K varying from 5 to 50 mWcm. The critical fields in the
perpendicular direction turned out to be in the 13-24 T range while they were
estimated to be in 42-57 T the range in ab-planes. In contrast to the
prediction of the BCS theory, we did not observe any saturation at low
temperatures: a linear temperature dependence is exhibited even at lowest
temperatures at which we made the measurements. Moreover, the critical field
values seemed not to depend on the normal state resistivity value. In this
paper, we analyze these data considering the multiband nature of
superconductivity in MgB2 We will show how the scattering mechanisms that
determine critical fields and resistivity can be different.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
