    T-Odd Correlations in pi->e nu_e gamma and pi->mu nu_mu gamma Decays

    Full text link
    The transverse lepton polarization asymmetry in pi_l2gamma decays may probe T-violating interactions beyond the Standard Model. Dalitz plot distributions of the expected effects are presented and compared to the contribution from the Standard Model final state interactions. We give an example of a phenomenologically viable model, where a considerable contribution to the transverse lepton polarization asymmetry arises.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. Study of a Large NaI(Tl) Crystal

    Full text link
    Using a narrow band positron beam, the response of a large high-resolution NaI(Tl) crystal to an incident positron beam was measured. It was found that nuclear interactions cause the appearance of additional peaks in the low energy tail of the deposited energy spectrum

    High Purity Pion Beam at TRIUMF

    Full text link
    An extension of the TRIUMF M13 low-energy pion channel designed to suppress positrons based on an energy-loss technique is described. A source of beam channel momentum calibration from the decay pi+ --> e+ nu is also described.Comment: 5 page

    Precision Measurement of the Ļ€+ā†’e+Ī½e Branching Ratio in the PIENU Experiment

    Get PDF
    The PIENU experiment at TRIUMF aims to measure the branching ratio of the pion decay modes RĻ€=[Ļ€+ā†’e+Ī½e(Ī³)]/[Ļ€+ā†’Ī¼+Ī½Ī¼(Ī³)] with precision of <0.1%. Precise measurement of RĻ€ provides a stringent test of electron-muon universality in weak interactions. The current status of the PIENU experiment and future prospects are presented

    Fermionic partner of Quintessence field as candidate for dark matter

    Full text link
    Quintessence is a possible candidate for dark energy. In this paper we study the phenomenologies of the fermionic partner of Quintessence, the Quintessino. Our results show that, for suitable choices of the model parameters, the Quintessino is a good candidate for cold or warm dark matter. In our scenario, dark energy and dark matter of the Universe are connected in one chiral superfield.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, version to appear in PR

    Search for the decay K+ā†’Ļ€+Ī½Ī½Ė‰K^+\to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu in the momentum region PĻ€<195Ā MeV/cP_\pi < 195 {\rm ~MeV/c}

    Full text link
    We have searched for the decay K+ā†’Ļ€+Ī½Ī½Ė‰K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu in the kinematic region with pion momentum below the K+ā†’Ļ€+Ļ€0K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 peak. One event was observed, consistent with the background estimate of 0.73Ā±0.180.73\pm 0.18. This implies an upper limit on B(K+ā†’Ļ€+Ī½Ī½Ė‰)<4.2Ɨ10āˆ’9B(K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu)< 4.2\times 10^{-9} (90% C.L.), consistent with the recently measured branching ratio of (1.57āˆ’0.82+1.75)Ɨ10āˆ’10(1.57^{+1.75}_{-0.82}) \times 10^{-10}, obtained using the standard model spectrum and the kinematic region above the K+ā†’Ļ€+Ļ€0K^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 peak. The same data were used to search for K+ā†’Ļ€+X0K^+ \to \pi^+ X^0, where X0X^0 is a weakly interacting neutral particle or system of particles with 150<MX0<250Ā MeV/c2150 < M_{X^0} < 250 {\rm ~MeV/c^2}.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Exploring the potential of using undergraduatesā€™ knowledge, skills and experience in research methods as a proxy for capturing learning gain

    Learning gain is a politicised concept within contemporary HE, and as such has been aligned with agendas of teaching excellence and learning outcomes but the extent to which it captures actual learning has yet to be clarified. Here, we report the outcomes of a learning gain study which examines how studentsā€™ knowledge, skills and experiences as researchers develops throughout their studies. We examine data from a self-reporting survey administered across a university and college-based HE providers during studentsā€™ second year of undergraduate study. The data highlight disciplinary differences in student engagement with research methods and the significance of perceived relevance of research methods to studentsā€™ learning. These findings do have a bearing on the development of measures of learning gain as they are demonstrating the complexity of capturing student learning across disciplines. Our findings can be employed to develop a method of capturing learning gain that can be integrated into undergraduatesā€™ research methods education

    Search for the decay K+ to pi+ gamma gamma in the pi+ momentum region P>213 MeV/c

    Full text link
    We have searched for the K+ to pi+ gamma gamma decay in the kinematic region with pi+ momentum close to the end point. No events were observed, and the 90% confidence-level upper limit on the partial branching ratio was obtained, B(K+ to pi+ gamma gamma, P>213 MeV/c) < 8.3 x 10-9 under the assumption of chiral perturbation theory including next-to-leading order ``unitarity'' corrections. The same data were used to determine an upper limit on the K+ to pi+ gamma branching ratio of 2.3 x 10-9 at the 90% confidence level.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; no change in the results, accepted for publication in Physics Letters
