    Evaluation of telerobotic systems using an instrumented task board

    An instrumented task board was developed at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). An overview of the task board design, and current development status is presented. The task board was originally developed to evaluate operator performance using the Protoflight Manipulator Arm (PFMA) at MSFC. The task board evaluates tasks for Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU), fluid connect and transfers, electrical connect/disconnect, bolt running, and other basic tasks. The instrumented task board measures the 3-D forces and torques placed on the board, determines the robot arm's 3-D position relative to the task board using IR optics, and provides the information in real-time. The PFMA joint input signals can also be measured from a breakout box to evaluate the sensitivity or response of the arm operation to control commands. The data processing system provides the capability for post processing of time-history graphics and plots of the PFMA positions, the operator's actions, and the PFMA servo reactions in addition to real-time force/torque data presentation. The instrumented task board's most promising use is developing benchmarks for NASA centers for comparison and evaluation of telerobotic performance

    Tris (2,30-dibromopropyl) phosphate was used to confer flame retardant properties on butyl rubber formulations used in protective clothing such as the self-contained atmospheric protective ensembles (SCAPE suits) worn at Kennedy Space Center in support of Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz missions since 1966. Because tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate is mutagenic, surface concentrations of the compound in SCAPE suits were investigated as were as potential methods of removing or isolating it. Analytical procedures for determining surface concentrations of the tris compound on non-porous materials are described. Soap-and-water washing is the most efficient method of removing the compound from fabricated SCAPE suits and unused material

    A laser target reflector assembly for mounting upon spacecraft having a long-range reflector array formed from a plurality of unfiltered light reflectors embedded in an array pattern upon a hemispherical reflector disposed upon a mounting plate. The reflector assembly also includes a short-range reflector array positioned upon the mounting body proximate to the long-range reflector array. The short-range reflector array includes three filtered light reflectors positioned upon extensions from the mounting body. The three filtered light reflectors retro-reflect substantially all incident light rays that are transmissive by their monochromatic filters and received by the three filtered light reflectors.     Report for passive data acquired in the 1998-1999 Los Angeles Region Seismic Experiment II: a transect from Santa Monica Bay to the Westernmost Mojave Desert

    Between October, 1998 and April, 1999, 83 seismic stations were installed in the greater western Los Angeles, California area to record teleseismic, regional, and local earthquakes. The near-linear 93-km long array extended between Santa Monica Bay and the western Mojave Desert, through the epicentral region of the Northridge earthquake. The goals of the experiment were to determine crustal thickness below the western Transverse Ranges, San Fernando Valley basin, and western Mojave Desert, measure anistropy along the line with special emphasis on the San Andreas fault region, evaluate the potential for future strong ground shaking at sites in the basins, and determine the kinematic relationship between crustal and uppermost mantle deformation by three-dimensional tomographic inversion using regional network data combined with the array data. The stations consisted of three-component, broadband and short-period seismometers, and timing was controlled by Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. The array recorded 165 Gb of raw waveform data in continuous (25 sps) and triggered (50 sps) streams. Approximately 144 teleseismic earthquakes with magnitudes ≥ 5.5, and 2025 local earthquakes with magnitude ≥ 2.0 were recorded. Preliminary results from three-dimensional teleseismic traveltime inversion tomography indicate that uppermost mantle seismic anomalies strongly correlate with thickened crust in the Transverse Ranges suggesting that the width of the compressional region and convergence rate control the location of deformation more than the San Andreas shear zone does

    Thermal kinetic inductance detectors for ground-based millimeter-wave cosmology

    We show measurements of thermal kinetic inductance detectors (TKID) intended for millimeter wave cosmology in the 200-300 GHz atmospheric window. The TKID is a type of bolometer which uses the kinetic inductance of a superconducting resonator to measure the temperature of the thermally isolated bolometer island. We measure bolometer thermal conductance, time constant and noise equivalent power. We also measure the quality factor of our resonators as the bath temperature varies to show they are limited by effects consistent with coupling to two level systems.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.
