    Beyond viewpoint: X3D camera nodes for digital cinematography

    The article of record as published may be located at http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/1559764.1559776This paper describes four candidate X3D extension nodes: Camera, Shot, Movement and OffineRendering. An X3D lexicon for camera movements is defined so that individuals directing virtual cameras in X3D can directly apply terms that film directors and cinematographers understand. This approach greatly simplifies the technical tasks involved in crreating precise camera animations and setting up still images for digital photography. Further, candidate methods are examined for implementing Depth of Field for focus control. Moving beyond the typical clumsiness of Viewpoint control can enable authors to create compelling still and moving images from X3D scenes

    X3D Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) Implementation and Run-Time Discovery of New Entities using X3DOM

    The article of record as published may be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.11145/2775292.2775318New capabilities in web browser JavaScript implementations including networking, improved graphics performance, and improved speed allow the implementation of Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) inside the web browser. An NVE can be written in JavaScript, which enables deployment in the enterprise entirely from a web server without the use of browser plugins. We discuss one implementation of this idea using X3DOM, an opensource implementation of the X3D standard written in JavaScript. The Open-DIS library for the IEEE Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) network protocol is used to create a partial implementation of the X3D standard’s DIS profile. Mechanisms for using the X3D DIS Profile DISEntityTypeMapping and DISEntityManager to enable run-time discovery and launching of new entities are discussed. Measurements of the capabilities and performance aspects of Websockets for network transport demonstrate excellent results

    Virtual Reality (VR) interfaces to e-commerce sites have recently begun to appear on the Internet, promising to make the e-shopping experience more natural, attractive, and fun for customers. Adaptivity is an important issue for these VR applications, because it would make them suitable for the 1-to-1 ecommerce strategies towards which sellers are increasingly driven. It is thus surprising that the introduction of adaptive features in VR stores remains a completely unexplored issue. This paper begins to face the problem, presenting and discussing ADVIRT, a first prototype of an adaptive VR store. In ADVIRT, a set of personalization rules exploits a model of the customer to adapt features of the VR store such as: (i) the display of different products in the store (e.g., shelf space, display spots, banners, audio advertising), (ii) the navigation aids available to the customer, (iii) the store layout, organization, and look
