Observation of inertial energy cascade in interplanetary space plasma
We show in this article direct evidence for the presence of an inertial
energy cascade, the most characteristic signature of hydromagnetic turbulence
(MHD), in the solar wind as observed by the Ulysses spacecraft. After a brief
rederivation of the equivalent of Yaglom's law for MHD turbulence, we show that
a linear relation is indeed observed for the scaling of mixed third order
structure functions involving Els\"asser variables. This experimental result,
confirming the prescription stemming from a theorem for MHD turbulence, firmly
establishes the turbulent character of low-frequency velocity and magnetic
field fluctuations in the solar wind plasma
Signals of Warped Extra Dimensions at the LHC
We discuss the signatures of the spin-2 graviton excitations predicted by the
Randall-Sundrum model with one warped extra dimension, in dilepton and diphoton
production at LHC. By using a specific angular analysis, we assess the ranges
in mass and coupling constant where such gravitons can be discriminated against
competitor spin-1 and spin-0 objects, that potentially could manifest
themselves in these processes with the same mass and rate of events. Depending
on the value of the coupling constant to quarks and leptons, the numerical
results indicate graviton identification mass ranges up to 1.1-2.4 TeV and
1.6-3.2 TeV for LHC nominal energy of 14 TeV and time-integrated luminosity of
10 and 100~, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, Talk given at QCD@Work - International Workshop on QCD -

Distillation by repeated measurements: continuous spectrum case
Repeated measurements on a part of a bipartite system strongly affect the
other part not measured, whose dynamics is regulated by an effective contracted
evolution operator. When the spectrum of this operator is discrete, the latter
system is driven into a pure state irrespective of the initial state, provided
the spectrum satisfies certain conditions. We here show that even in the case
of continuous spectrum an effective distillation can occur under rather general
conditions. We confirm it by applying our formalism to a simple model.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
