    Bodily injuries and dative experiencers in Old Frisian

    This article offers a descriptive account of body part constructions in Old East Frisian texts and analyzes the occurrence of dative experiencers in such clauses. This includes a comparison between Old Frisian body part grammar and its Middle Dutch counterpart, revisiting issues such as the antiquity of dative external possessors and oblique subject constructions in West Germanic. In presenting the data from a theory-neutral perspective, this investigation contributes to the study of body part grammar in Medieval Germanic in particular and to the growing body of literature on Old Frisian syntax in general

    Finite-discrete element modelling of masonry infill walls subjected to out-of-plane loads

    In this paper, the out-of-plane response of infill walls is investigated by means of non-linear monotonic (push-over) analyses through a combined finite and discrete modelling approach. The model accounts for material deformability, crack formation, sliding, separa-tion and formation of new contacts. Masonry units are modelled as finite elements, and differ-ent material models are assumed for the masonry. Contact between masonry units, and between masonry and frame elements is modelled by means of interfaces, which permit tan-gential motion with frictional sliding. Frame elements are modelled by means of a linear-elastic material. The results of the numerical analyses are compared with those of experimen-tal tests available in the literature. The advantages and disadvantages of the adopted model-ling strategy are investigated

    Risk factors associated with the occurrence of autoimmune diseases in adult coeliac patients

    Objectives. Autoimmune diseases (AD) may be associated with coeliac disease (CD), but specific risk factors have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the spectrum of AD and its specific risk factors associated in a series of adult coeliac patients. Materials and Methods. We performed a single-center case-control study including adult newly diagnosed CD patients. To evaluate the risk factors of the association between AD and CD, 341 coeliac patients included were categorized on the basis of AD presence: 91 cases with at least one AD and 250 controls without AD were compared for clinical, serological, and histological features. Eighty-seven cases were age-gender-matched with 87 controls. Results. Among 341 CD patients, 26.6% of CD patients had at least one AD. Endocrine and dermatological diseases were the most prevalent AD encountered: autoimmune thyroiditis was present in 48.4% of cases, psoriasis in 17.6%, and type I diabetes and dermatitis herpetiformis in 11%, respectively. At logistic regression, factors associated with AD were a positive 1st-degree family history of AD (OR 3.7, 95% CI 1.93–7), a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2 at CD diagnosis (OR 2.95%, CI 1.1–3.8), and long standing presentation signs/symptoms before CD diagnosis (>10 years) (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.1–3.7). Analysis on age-gender-matched patients confirmed these results. Conclusions. CD patients with family history of AD, overweight at CD diagnosis, and a delay of CD diagnosis had an increased risk of having another AD. The benefit of CD screening in these specific subsets of patients with AD awaits further investigation

    Across the US, where ‘food deserts’ heavily shape access to fresh, local and healthy food, institutions, NGOs and private citizens are committed to designing and implementing measures aimed at getting a greater control over the food daily supplied to million people. This paper highlights the case study of the San Diego Region (CA), where the goals of a ‘sustainable, secure and resilient food system’ addressed by an array of instruments ranging from food policies to land use tools and municipal zoning codes are mobilizing from the very beginning community at large: producers, brokers, consumers. The account is twofold. On the one hand, it aims to highlight a sort of ‘value chain’ within the approach in linking traditionally separate issues, on the other hand, it prompts for new meanings and uses for vacant land, that can result in a strategically planned and delivered green infrastructure comprising the broadest range of open spaces and other environmental features

    Phase state and surface topography of palmitoyl-ceramide monolayers

    In cell biology (and in many biophysical) studies there is a natural tendency to consider ceramide as a highly condensed, solid-type lipid conferring rigidity and close packing to biomembranes. In the present work we advanced the understanding of the phase behavior of palmitoyl-ceramide restricted to a planar interface using Langmuir monolayers under strictly controlled and known surface packing conditions. Surface pressure-molecular area isotherms were complemented with molecular area-temperature isobars and with observations of the surface topography by Brewster Angle Microscopy. The results described herein indicate that palmitoyl-ceramide can exhibit expanded, as well as condensed phase states. Formation of three phases was found, depending on the surface pressure and temperature: a solid (1.80nm thick), a liquid-condensed (1.73nm thick, likely tilted) and a liquid-expanded (1.54nm thick) phase over the temperature range 5-62 °C. A large hysteretic behavior is observed for the S phase monolayer that may indicate high resistance to domain boundary deformation. A second (or higher) order S→LC phase transition is observed at about room temperature while a first order LC→LE transition occurs in a range of temperature encompassing the physiological one (observed above 30 °C at low surface pressure). This phase behavior broadens the view of ceramide as a type of lipid not-always-rigid but able to exhibit polymorphic properties.Fil: Fanani, Maria Laura.     Supervised Physical Therapy and Polymyositis/Dermatomyositis—A Systematic Review of the Literature

    Objective: to find the most up-to-date evidence of the effectiveness and safety of supervised physical therapy in polymyositis/dermatomyositis patients. Methods: a systematic review of the literature in the main scientific databases was carried out. We searched for randomized controlled trials concerning supervised physical therapy and polymyositis/dermatomyositis. The PICOS method was used for the formulation of the clinical query. Methodological quality and the level of evidence of the included studies were assessed using the modified Jadad scale and the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Levels of Evidence guide, respectively. Results: a total of 2591 articles were found. By applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, six randomized controlled clinical trials were admitted to the final phase of the review. The compared approaches concerned supervised exercise programs based on strategies of muscle strengthening or aerobic work. Following these exercises, an increase in the maximum rate of oxygen consumption, a decrease in creatine phosphokinase levels, an enhancement in the patient’s aerobic performance and an improvement in the quality of life indexes were registered. The methodological quality of the included studies ranged from 3 to 4.5. All the studies were classified as presenting an evidence level of 2b. Conclusions: supervised physical therapy in polymyositis/dermatomyositis is an effective, safe and free-of-contraindications tool to be used both in the acute and in the established phases of the pathology. However, further and higher-quality studies are necessary to confirm those findings, to clarify the timing of exercise delivery and to guide the choice towards different types of muscle contraction exercises

    Leveraging the Demands of edTPA to Foster Language Instruction for English Learners in Content Classrooms

    This article provides insight into how a required, clinically based national teacher performance assessment for candidates becoming English-as-a-second-language specialists in many U.S. states, the Education Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), engenders a focus on language instruction in the content-based classroom. This assessment’s focus on language within the content areas provides a positive washback opportunity to strengthen teacher candidates\u27 language instruction in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) preparation programs connected to partner schools in which classrooms often provide sheltered content with minimal language instruction. We share how, in our large Masters of Arts program in TESOL, we have purposefully integrated the edTPA into supervised student teaching with positive results for teacher candidates as well as host classrooms

    Membrane protein remodeling in microglia exposed to amyloid peptides

    Infection, neurodegeneration, and other conditions associated with loss of brain homeostasis, induce changes in microglial morphology, gene expression and function, generally referred to as “activation”. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common dementia and is characterized by neuroinfammatory changes, including alterations in the morphology and distribution of microglia and astrocytes, and deposition of complement and other infammatory mediators. Our previous observations show that microglial cells challenged in vitro with amyloid peptides clustered and rounded up, dramatically changing their morphology. Besides, in these cells we observed the early acetylation and then the phosphorylation of STAT3 which is required for the expression of the epsilon isoform of 14-3-3, a marker of Abeta-activated microglia (1, 2). We applied afnity partitioning approach combined with high throughput mass spectrometric analysis in order to identify variation of proteins on plasma membrane of BV2 immortalized microglia upon treatment with amyloid peptides. By this method several proteins up- or down-regulated by amyloid treatment were identifed in microglial plasma membrane. Among them annexins (5 and 7), IFITM3 and MARK3. These data have been confrmed in primary microglial cultures. In microglia, plasma membrane plays a relevant role in the cross-talking with the external neuronal environment and in the resulting trophic or infammatory response of these sentinel cells. As such, knowledge of the microglia responsiveness to beta amyloids in term of changes in its plasma membrane proteome is imperative for unveiling the molecular landscape in which AD occurs
