Non-quantized Dirac monopoles and strings in the Berry phase of anisotropic spin systems
The Berry phase of an anisotropic spin system that is adiabatically rotated
along a closed circuit C is investigated. It is shown that the Berry phase
consists of two contributions: (i) a geometric contribution which can be
interpreted as the flux through C of a non-quantized Dirac monopole, and (ii) a
topological contribution which can be interpreted as the flux through C of a
Dirac string carrying a non-quantized flux, i.e., a spin analogue of the
Aharonov-Bohm effect. Various experimental consequences of this novel effect

A complete characterisation of the heralded noiseless amplification of photons
Heralded noiseless amplifcation of photons has recently been shown to provide
a means to overcome losses in complex quantum communication tasks. In
particular, to overcome transmission losses that could allow for the violation
of a Bell inequality free from the detection loophole, for Device Independent
Quantum Key Distribution (DI-QKD). Several implementations of a heralded photon
amplifier have been proposed and the first proof of principle experiments
realised. Here we present the first full characterisation of such a device to
test its functional limits and potential for DI-QKD. This device is tested at
telecom wavelengths and is shown to be capable of overcoming losses
corresponding to a transmission through of single mode telecom
fibre. We demonstrate heralded photon amplifier with a gain and a
heralding probability , required by DI-QKD protocols that use the
Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. The heralded photon amplifier
clearly represents a key technology for the realisation of DI-QKD in the real

On the Logarithmic Asymptotics of the Sixth Painleve' Equation (Summer 2007)
We study the solutions of the sixth Painlev\'e equation with a logarithmic
asymptotic behavior at a critical point. We compute the monodromy group
associated to the solutions by the method of monodromy preserving deformations
and we characterize the asymptotic behavior in terms of the monodromy itself.Comment: LaTeX with 8 figure
Pose consensus based on dual quaternion algebra with application to decentralized formation control of mobile manipulators
This paper presents a solution based on dual quaternion algebra to the
general problem of pose (i.e., position and orientation) consensus for systems
composed of multiple rigid-bodies. The dual quaternion algebra is used to model
the agents' poses and also in the distributed control laws, making the proposed
technique easily applicable to time-varying formation control of general
robotic systems. The proposed pose consensus protocol has guaranteed
convergence when the interaction among the agents is represented by directed
graphs with directed spanning trees, which is a more general result when
compared to the literature on formation control. In order to illustrate the
proposed pose consensus protocol and its extension to the problem of formation
control, we present a numerical simulation with a large number of free-flying
agents and also an application of cooperative manipulation by using real mobile
manipulators
Foaming properties of protein/pectin electrostatic complexes and foam structure at the nanoscale
The foaming properties, foaming capacity and foam stability, of soluble
complexes of pectin and a globular protein, napin, have been investigated with
a "Foamscan" apparatus. Complementary, we also used SANS with a recent method
consisting in an analogy between the SANS by foams and the neutron reflectivity
of films to measure in situ film thickness of foams. The effect of ionic
strength, of protein concentration and of charge density of the pectin has been
analysed. Whereas the foam stability is improved for samples containing soluble
complexes, no effect has been noticed on the foam film thickness, which is
almost around 315 {\AA} whatever the samples. These results let us specify the
role of each specie in the mixture: free proteins contribute to the foaming
capacity, provided the initial free protein content in the bulk is sufficient
to allow the foam formation, and soluble complexes slow down the drainage by
their presence in the Plateau borders, which finally results in the
stabilisation of foams

The therapeutic management of gut barrier leaking: the emerging role for mucosal barrier protectors
OBJECTIVE:
Gut barrier is a functional unit organized as a multi-layer system and its multiple functions are crucial for maintaining gut homeostasis. Numerous scientific evidences showed a significant association between gut barrier leaking and gastro-intestinal/extra-intestinal diseases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
In this review we focus on the relationship between gut barrier leaking and human health. At the same time we speculate on the possible new role of gut barrier protectors in enhancing and restoring gut barrier physiology with the final goal of promoting gut health.
RESULTS:
The alteration of the equilibrium in gut barrier leads to the passage of the luminal contents to the underlying tissues and thus into the bloodstream, resulting in the activation of the immune response and in the induction of gut inflammation. This permeability alteration is the basis for the pathogenesis of many diseases, including infectious enterocolitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, celiac disease, hepatic fibrosis, food intolerances and also atopic manifestations. Many drugs or compounds used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disease are able to alter the permeability of the intestinal barrier. Recent data highlighted and introduced the possibility of using gelatin tannate, a mucosal barrier protector, for an innovative approach in the management of intestinal diseases, allowing an original therapeutic orientation with the aim of enhancing mucus barrier activity and restoring gut barrier.
CONCLUSIONS:
These results suggest how the mucus layer recovering, beside the gut microbiota modulation, exerted by gut barrier protectors could be a useful weapon to re-establish the physiological intestinal homeostasis after an acute and chronic injury
