    Serum microRNA-122 predicts survival in patients with liver cirrhosis

    Background: Liver cirrhosis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. MicroRNAs (miRs) circulating in the blood are an emerging new class of biomarkers. In particular, the serum level of the liver-specific miR-122 might be a clinically useful new parameter in patients with acute or chronic liver disease. Aim: Here we investigated if the serum level of miR-122 might be a prognostic parameter in patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods: 107 patients with liver cirrhosis in the test cohort and 143 patients in the validation cohort were prospectively enrolled into the present study. RNA was extracted from the sera obtained at the time of study enrollment and the level of miR-122 was assessed. Serum miR-122 levels were assessed by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and were compared to overall survival time and to different complications of liver cirrhosis. Results: Serum miR-122 levels were reduced in patients with hepatic decompensation in comparison to patients with compensated liver disease. Patients with ascites, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and hepatorenal syndrome had significantly lower miR-122 levels than patients without these complications. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that the miR-122 serum levels were associated with survival independently from the MELD score, sex and age. Conclusions: Serum miR-122 is a new independent marker for prediction of survival of patients with liver cirrhosis

    A single ion as a three-body reaction center in an ultracold atomic gas

    We report on three-body recombination of a single trapped Rb^+ ion and two neutral Rb atoms in an ultracold atom cloud. We observe that the corresponding rate coefficient K_3 depends on collision energy and is about a factor of 1000 larger than for three colliding neutral Rb atoms. In the three-body recombination process large energies up to several 0.1eV are released leading to an ejection of the ion from the atom cloud. It is sympathetically recooled back into the cloud via elastic binary collisions with cold atoms. Further, we find that the final ionic product of the three-body processes is again an atomic Rb^+ ion suggesting that the ion merely acts as a catalyzer, possibly in the formation of deeply bound Rb_2 molecules.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

In English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) contexts, it also marks hesitation, self-correction, and floor-holding. Our paper uses quantitative and qualitative discourse analytical methodology to examine so in a corpus of video-mediated informal conversations between ELF speakers, where it is the most frequent discourse marker. The analysis demonstrates that all functions documented in first-language English use also occur in ELF. We also document extended uses of so to prompt inference and to illustrate pragmatic competence, particularly in combination with other discourse markers such as okay

    An Omnidirectional Aerial Manipulation Platform for Contact-Based Inspection

    This paper presents an omnidirectional aerial manipulation platform for robust and responsive interaction with unstructured environments, toward the goal of contact-based inspection. The fully actuated tilt-rotor aerial system is equipped with a rigidly mounted end-effector, and is able to exert a 6 degree of freedom force and torque, decoupling the system's translational and rotational dynamics, and enabling precise interaction with the environment while maintaining stability. An impedance controller with selective apparent inertia is formulated to permit compliance in certain degrees of freedom while achieving precise trajectory tracking and disturbance rejection in others. Experiments demonstrate disturbance rejection, push-and-slide interaction, and on-board state estimation with depth servoing to interact with local surfaces.     ISTmobil: Customer Needs Orientated, Individual Mobility Services in Suburban Areas (Individual Mobility as a Service)

    January 2014, challenges concerning urban mobility worldwide and strategies for cities to shape urban mobility better are identified (Arthur D. Little, UITP (2014)). The study indicates that in most cities the potential of urban mobility measures is not achieved and most cities are still badly equipped to cope with the challenges ahead. According to the Arthur D. Little study developements toward individualization and sustainability will require mobility services portfolio extension as well as business model transformation (Arthur D. Little, UITP (2014)). So the developement of urban mobility systems that are able to respond to this challenges is one of the greatest challenges facing cities today. Connection ISTmobil and Urban Mobility Initially the concept of ISTmobil was developed for rural or sub-urban areas. These areas are often characterized by marginal public transport supply. In some cases inhabitants and visitors depend on the private car and have no other choice. One aspect which is linked to this problem is the high rate of motorization within the communities. Looking at the initial situation and the urbanisation trend, which forces people from rural areas to commute in urban areas, there is also a connection to the topic urban mobility. In order to strengthen the use of public transport systems and at the same time mitigating commuting flows of motorised individual transport in the cities the ISTmobil system was developed. Therefore a special offer for commuters, the so called „Pendlerabo“, was developed. The ISTmobil concept The underlying idea behind the concept ISTmobil is the creation of micro public transport systems for rural and suburban areas which are cross-linked to exisiting public transport supply. Moreover, it should be possible to travel in a region or in near future in the whole country with one card and one booking number. A „One-stop shop“ supply of complete mobility services would ease the usage of the mobility services. Another important aspect is to foster cooperations and increase coordination of the different mobility services, which leads to the pooling of regional transport providers

    C-Reactive Protein Triggers Cell Death in Ischemic Cells

    C-reactive protein (CRP) is the best-known acute phase protein. In humans, almost every type of inflammation is accompanied by an increase of CRP concentration. Until recently, the only known physiological function of CRP was the marking of cells to initiate their phagocytosis. This triggers the classical complement pathway up to C4, which helps to eliminate pathogens and dead cells. However, vital cells with reduced energy supply are also marked, which is useful in the case of a classical external wound because an important substrate for pathogens is disposed of, but is counterproductive at internal wounds (e.g., heart attack or stroke). This mechanism negatively affects clinical outcomes since it is established that CRP levels correlate with the prognosis of these indications. Here, we summarize what we can learn from a clinical study in which CRP was adsorbed from the bloodstream by CRP-apheresis. Recently, it was shown that CRP can have a direct effect on blood pressure in rabbits. This is interesting in regard to patients with high inflammation, as they often become tachycardic and need catecholamines. These two physiological effects of CRP apparently also occur in COVID-19. Parts of the lung become ischemic due to intra-alveolar edema and hemorrhage and in parallel CRP increases dramatically, hence it is assumed that CRP is also involved in this ischemic condition. It is meanwhile considered that most of the damage in COVID-19 is caused by the immune system. The high amounts of CRP could have an additional influence on blood pressure in severe COVID-19

    Altered nutrition behavior during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in young adults

    Purpose. The COVID-19 pandemic and the implemented lockdown strongly impact on everyone’s daily life. Stressful situations are known to alter eating habits and increase the risk for obesity. In our study, we aimed to investigate the effect of the lockdown measures on nutrition behavior among young adults. Methods. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 1964 voluntary participants from Bavarian universities. All participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire, semi-quantitatively evaluating the amount and type of food before and during pandemic lockdown. Study subjects were inquired to give information about acquisition and food procurement. The primary outcome was the change in food amount, secondary outcomes included alterations of food composition and procurement. Results. Our study cohort (mean age 23.3 ± 4.0 years, 28.5% male) had a mean body mass index of 22.1 ± 4.5 kg/m2. The overall food amount increased in 31.2% of participants (n = 610) during lockdown and decreased in 16.8% (n = 328). A multinominal regression model revealed that an increased food intake was less likely in male participants (OR, 0.7 [CI 0.6–0.9]) and more likely with increasing BMI (OR, 1.4 [CI 1.3–2.0]), increased sports activity (OR, 1.3 [CI 1.2–1.8]), augmented mental stress (OR 1.4 [1.1–1.7]), and an alteration of alcohol consumption (reduced alcohol amount, OR, 1.4 [CI 1.1–1.7], increased alcohol, OR, 1.9 [CI 1.4–2.5]). Increase in food intake was mainly triggered by consumption of bread (increased in 46.8%, n = 284) and confectionary (increased in 64.4%, n = 389). Conclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic lockdown significantly affected eating habits in young adults. Further investigation to evaluate long-term effects on weight change and comorbidities are warranted
