Pier III construction in Port of Koper

Luka Koper provides port and logistics services in the Port of Koper. Their basic activity covers cargo handling and warehousing services for all types of goods and their vision is to become the leading port and logistics system servicing the countries of Central Europe. In 1957 the Port of Koper was founded. The floating dredger started dredging the sea bottom on the north coast of the city. The first ship was moored a year and a half later, when the first berth was completed. By the year 2008 they increased the yearly cargo throughput to 16 million tons. Constant development and upgrading of port and logistic services dictates planning and constructing of new infrastructure. One of the projects planned is the construction of a new third pier for containers capable of handling 1 million TEUs per year. The graduation thesis will examine the known and most used types of piers and terminals, and methods of construction. Through geotechnical field and laboratory studies will determine significant geotechnical profile, the level of solid layers and design values of some other fundamental characteristics of subsoil. Based on the findings I will choose three suitable types of piers and run stability analisys for two of them. I will check stability for existing subsoil profile, for various phases of construction and for the completed pier. I will do the calculations with the software Rocsience Slide 5.0 and Plaxis 8.6. At the end of thesis I will present the conclusions based on calculations and give directions for construction of the selected type of pier
