In vivo Neutralization of Pro-inflammatory Cytokines During Secondary Streptococcus pneumoniae Infection Post Influenza A Virus Infection

An overt pro-inflammatory immune response is a key factor contributing to lethal pneumococcal infection in an influenza pre-infected host and represents a potential target for therapeutic intervention. However, there is a paucity of knowledge about the level of contribution of individual cytokines. Based on the predictions of our previous mathematical modeling approach, the potential benefit of IFN-γ- and/or IL-6-specific antibody-mediated cytokine neutralization was explored in C57BL/6 mice infected with the influenza A/PR/8/34 strain, which were subsequently infected with the Streptococcus pneumoniae strain TIGR4 on day 7 post influenza. While single IL-6 neutralization had no effect on respiratory bacterial clearance, single IFN-γ neutralization enhanced local bacterial clearance in the lungs. Concomitant neutralization of IFN-γ and IL-6 significantly reduced the degree of pneumonia as well as bacteremia compared to the control group, indicating a positive effect for the host during secondary bacterial infection. The results of our model-driven experimental study reveal that the predicted therapeutic value of IFN-γ and IL-6 neutralization in secondary pneumococcal infection following influenza infection is tightly dependent on the experimental protocol while at the same time paving the way toward the development of effective immune therapies

Diese DEval-Publikation fasst die Ergebnisse des DEval-Meinungsmonitors Entwicklungspolitik 2021 zusammen. Dabei wurde untersucht, welche Partnerländer die Bevölkerung als besonders unterstützenswert erachtet und an welchen sozioökonomischen und politischen Merkmalen der Länder sie dies festmacht

Meinungsmonitor Entwicklungspolitik 2022: Entwicklungspolitisches Engagement in Zeiten globaler Krisen und Herausforderungen

Der Meinungsmonitor Entwicklungspolitik 2022 umfasst zwei Themenblöcke: Im ersten Teil werden zentrale Einstellungen der Bevölkerung zu Entwicklungspolitik untersucht. Behandelt werden unter anderem die generelle Unterstützung für staatliche Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZ), die Einstellung zu verschiedenen Motiven für EZ sowie die Einschätzung ihrer Wirksamkeit. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt Einstellungen zu Demokratie und Demokratieförderung. Im zweiten Teil steht das entwicklungspolitische Engagement im Fokus: einerseits nicht-monetäres Engagement wie informations- und kommunikationsbezogene Aktivitäten, organisationsbezogenes Engagement und politische Partizipation, andererseits monetäres Engagement wie Spenden an entwicklungspolitische Organisationen und nachhaltiger Konsum. Ergänzt wird der zweite Teil durch einen Gastbeitrag, in dem die verschiedenen Engagementformen zu einer Typologie zusammengefasst und Einflussfaktoren auf den Wechsel zwischen Engagementtypen im Zeitverlauf analysiert werden. In beiden Teilen werden die Indikatoren für Einstellungen und Engagement (längsschnittlich) dargestellt und auf Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Bevölkerungsgruppen hin untersucht. Abschließend werden Implikationen für staatliche und zivilgesellschaftliche entwicklungspolitische Akteure zur Strategie-, Kommunikations- und Bildungsarbeit sowie zur Förderung des entwicklungspolitischen Engagements formuliert

Aktive Gefahrenbremsungen - wie reagiert das Fahrer-Fahrzeug-System?

Ein Ansatz zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit im Straßenverkehr ist die Unterstützung des Fahrers durch Aktive Gefahrenbremsungen. Zur Beurteilung des Verhaltens von Fahrern arbeitete ein interdisziplinäres Wissenschaftlerteam der TU Darmstadt im Auftrag von sechs Industriepartnern (Audi, Bosch, BMW, Continental, MAN, Opel) im Rahmen der Forschungsinitiative „Aktiv“ (Adaptive und kooperative Technologien für den intelligenten Verkehr) [6], die vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Technologie (BMWi) gefördert wird

Charge Transport in Voltage-Biased Superconducting Single-Electron Transistors

Charge is transported through superconducting SSS single-electron transistors at finite bias voltages by a combination of coherent Cooper-pair tunneling and quasiparticle tunneling. At low transport voltages the effect of an ``odd'' quasiparticle in the island leads to a $2e$-periodic dependence of the current on the gate charge. We evaluate the $I-V$ characteristic in the framework of a model which accounts for these effects as well as for the influence of the electromagnetic environment. The good agreement between our model calculation and experimental results demonstrates the importance of coherent Cooper-pair tunneling and parity effects.Comment: RevTeX, 12 pages, 4 figure
