Time-Varying Fine-Structure Constant Requires Cosmological Constant
Webb et al. presented preliminary evidence for a time-varying fine-structure
constant. We show Teller's formula for this variation to be ruled out within
the Einstein-de Sitter universe, however, it is compatible with cosmologies

Physics of Interpulse Emission in Radio Pulsars
The magnetized induced Compton scattering off the particles of the
ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasma of pulsar is considered. The main
attention is paid to the transverse regime of the scattering, which holds in a
moderately strong magnetic field. We specifically examine the problem on
induced transverse scattering of the radio beam into the background, which
takes place in the open field line tube of a pulsar. In this case, the
radiation is predominantly scattered backwards and the scattered component may
grow considerably. Based on this effect, we for the first time suggest a
physical explanation of the interpulse emission observed in the profiles of
some pulsars. Our model can naturally account for the peculiar spectral and
polarization properties of the interpulses. Furthermore, it implies a specific
connection of the interpulse to the main pulse, which may reveal itself in the
consistent intensity fluctuations of the components at different timescales.
Diverse observational manifestations of this connection, including the moding
behavior of PSR B1822-09, the peculiar temporal and frequency structure of the
giant interpulses in the Crab pulsar, and the intrinsic phase correspondence of
the subpulse patterns in the main pulse and the interpulse of PSR B1702-19, are
discussed in detail. It is also argued that the pulse-to-pulse fluctuations of
the scattering efficiency may lead to strong variability of the interpulse,
which is yet to be studied observationally. In particular, some pulsars may
exhibit transient interpulses, i.e. the scattered component may be detectable

Information gap for classical and quantum communication in a Schwarzschild spacetime
Communication between a free-falling observer and an observer hovering above
the Schwarzschild horizon of a black hole suffers from Unruh-Hawking noise,
which degrades communication channels. Ignoring time dilation, which affects
all channels equally, we show that for bosonic communication using single and
dual rail encoding the classical channel capacity reaches a finite value and
the quantum coherent information tends to zero. We conclude that classical
correlations still exist at infinite acceleration, whereas the quantum

Structure and functional motifs of GCR1, the only plant protein with a GPCR fold?
Whether GPCRs exist in plants is a fundamental biological question. Interest in deorphanizing new G
protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), arises because of their importance in signaling. Within plants, this
is controversial as genome analysis has identified 56 putative GPCRs, including GCR1 which is
reportedly a remote homologue to class A, B and E GPCRs. Of these, GCR2, is not a GPCR; more
recently it has been proposed that none are, not even GCR1. We have addressed this disparity
between genome analysis and biological evidence through a structural bioinformatics study, involving
fold recognition methods, from which only GCR1 emerges as a strong candidate. To further probe
GCR1, we have developed a novel helix alignment method, which has been benchmarked against the
the class A – class B - class F GPCR alignments. In addition, we have presented a mutually consistent
set of alignments of GCR1 homologues to class A, class B and class F GPCRs, and shown that GCR1
is closer to class A and /or class B GPCRs than class A, class B or class F GPCRs are to each other.
To further probe GCR1, we have aligned transmembrane helix 3 of GCR1 to each of the 6 GPCR
classes. Variability comparisons provide additional evidence that GCR1 homologues have the GPCR
fold. From the alignments and a GCR1 comparative model we have identified motifs that are common
to GCR1, class A, B and E GPCRs. We discuss the possibilities that emerge from this controversial

Thermal Decomposition of Calcium Perchlorate/Iron-Mineral Mixtures: Implications of the Evolved Oxygen from the Rocknest Eolian Deposit in Gale Crater, Mars
A major oxygen release between 300 and 500 C was detected by the Mars Curiosity Rover Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument at the Rocknest eolian deposit. Thermal decomposition of perchlorate (ClO4-) salts in the Rocknest samples are a possible explanation for this evolved oxygen release. Releative to Na-, K-, Mg-, and Fe-perchlorate, the thermal decomposition of Ca-perchlorate in laboratory experiments released O2 in the temperature range (400-500degC) closest to the O2 release temperatures observed for the Rocknest material. Furthermore, calcium perchlorate could have been the source of Cl in the chlorinated-hydrocarbons species that were detected by SAM. Different components in the Martian soil could affect the decomposition temperature of calcium per-chlorate or another oxychlorine species. This interaction of the two components in the soil could result in O2 release temperatures consistent with those detected by SAM in the Rocknest materials. The decomposition temperatures of various alkali metal perchlorates are known to decrease in the presence of a catalyst. (1+3) Covariant Dynamics of Scalar Perturbations in Braneworlds
We discuss the dynamics of linear, scalar perturbations in an almost
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker braneworld cosmology of Randall-Sundrum type II
using the 1+3 covariant approach. We derive a complete set of frame-independent
equations for the total matter variables, and a partial set of equations for
the non-local variables which arise from the projection of the Weyl tensor in
the bulk. The latter equations are incomplete since there is no propagation
equation for the non-local anisotropic stress. We supplement the equations for
the total matter variables with equations for the independent constituents in a
cold dark matter cosmology, and provide solutions in the high and low-energy
radiation-dominated phase under the assumption that the non-local anisotropic
stress vanishes. These solutions reveal the existence of new modes arising from
the two additional non-local degrees of freedom. Our solutions should prove
useful in setting up initial conditions for numerical codes aimed at exploring
the effect of braneworld corrections on the cosmic microwave background (CMB)
power spectrum. As a first step in this direction, we derive the covariant form
of the line of sight solution for the CMB temperature anisotropies in
braneworld cosmologies, and discuss possible mechanisms by which braneworld

Stress Alters Rates and Types of Loss of Heterozygosity in Candida albicans
Genetic diversity is often generated during adaptation to stress, and in eukaryotes some of this diversity is thought to arise via recombination and reassortment of alleles during meiosis. Candida albicans, the most prevalent pathogen of humans, has no known meiotic cycle, and yet it is a heterozygous diploid that undergoes mitotic recombination during somatic growth. It has been shown that clinical isolates as well as strains passaged once through a mammalian host undergo increased levels of recombination. Here, we tested the hypothesis that stress conditions increase rates of mitotic recombination in C. albicans, which is measured as loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at specific loci. We show that LOH rates are elevated during in vitro exposure to oxidative stress, heat stress, and antifungal drugs. In addition, an increase in stress severity correlated well with increased LOH rates. LOH events can arise through local recombination, through homozygosis of longer tracts of chromosome arms, or by whole-chromosome homozygosis. Chromosome arm homozygosis was most prevalent in cultures grown under conventional lab conditions. Importantly, exposure to different stress conditions affected the levels of different types of LOH events, with oxidative stress causing increased recombination, while fluconazole and high temperature caused increases in events involving whole chromosomes. Thus, C. albicans generates increased amounts and different types of genetic diversity in response to a range of stress conditions, a process that we term “stress-induced LOH” that arises either by elevating rates of recombination and/or by increasing rates of chromosome missegregation
Pre-Big Bang Scenario on Self-T-Dual Bouncing Branes
We consider a new class of 5-dimensional dilatonic actions which are
invariant under T-duality transformations along three compact coordinates,
provided that an appropriate potential is chosen. We show that the invariance
remains when we add a boundary term corresponding to a moving 3-brane, and we
study the effects of the T-duality symmetry on the brane cosmological
equations. We find that T-duality transformations in the bulk induce scale
factor duality on the brane, together with a change of sign of the pressure of
the brane cosmological matter. However, in a remarkable analogy with the
Pre-Big Bang scenario, the cosmological equations are unchanged. Finally, we
propose a model where the dual phases are connected through a scattering of the
brane induced by an effective potential. We show how this model can realise a
smooth, non-singular transition between a pre-Big Bang superinflationary
