Contingent Valuation of Sports Stadiums and Arenas: Temporal Embedding and Order Effect

    Get PDF
Using the Contingent Valuation Method, this paper estimates the value of public goods the National Football League’s Jaguars produce for Jacksonville, Florida, including the value of elevating Jacksonville to “major league” status and the value of improving racial relations. It also estimates the incremental value of public goods potentially produced by a National Basketball Association team in Jacksonville. The present value of public goods created by the Jaguars is 36.5millionorless,farbelowsubsidiesprovidedtoattracttheJaguars.Forabasketballteam,thefigureislessthan36.5 million or less, far below subsidies provided to attract the Jaguars. For a basketball team, the figure is less than 22.8 million. The results add to the growing body of CVM literature indicating that sports public goods probably cannot justify the large public expenditures on stadiums and arenas.

An Analysis of the Pastor\u27s Relationship to the Sunday School in the Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church

The purpose of this study was to analyze the pastor\u27s relationship to the Sunday school in the Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church which involved the following factors: 1. The Free Methodist Church as an entire body of Christians. 2. The Oregon Conference of the Free Methodist Church functioning as one of several other conferences in a denomination. 3. Each local congregation as a church in a given area which is one of several churches in the Oregon Conference. 4. The pastor as supervisor of the church in all areas and departments. 5. The Sunday school as a department of the church. The pastor is the key to the success or failure of the church program. The Sunday school is a definite department of the church work. Therefore the pastor assumes the responsibility for success or failure of the Sunday school as well as the church. The attitude of the pastor regarding the department of the Sunday school is important. If the Sunday school will become effective it must have sound leadership. Many officers and teachers govern the work of the Sunday school but the pastor is over all including officers and teachers. The Sunday school that fails to be effective does not have proper pastoral guidance and training. The emphasis of this study was the importance of the pastor realizing his responsibility and place as over all supervisor of the Sunday school. The methods of study have developed from the available resource material. Before research for the study began, pertinent material had to be gathered from outside sources other than the library. After the material was gathered it was reviewed to discover any trend that may have been present in the history of the Sunday school movement, Methodism and Free Methodism regarding the pastor and the Sunday school. The primary source material for the trend in pastor and Sunday school relationship was discovered in the minutes of the Free Methodist conferences. The thesis title was sent to the Free Methodist Sunday School Secretary in quest of suggestions and possible questions. His response was of great assistance in the research and questionnaire. The questionnaire was sent to 33 pastors out of which 30 replied. The pastors were instructed to answer the questions without studying them. Two telephone conversations and one personal interview with the Oregon Conference Sunday School Secretary were also utilized. The Conference Sunday School Secretary provided considerable material which indicated the work being carried on in the conference. Besides material on the conference work, several questions for the questionnaire were received from the Oregon Conference Sunday School Secretary

Herschel Observations of Debris Discs Orbiting Planet-hosting Subgiants

    Get PDF
Debris discs are commonly detected orbiting main-sequence stars, yet little is known regarding their fate as the star evolves to become a giant. Recent observations of radial velocity detected planets orbiting giant stars highlight this population and its importance for probing, for example, the population of planetary systems orbiting intermediate mass stars. Our Herschel survey observed a subset of the Johnson et al program subgiants, finding that 4/36 exhibit excess emission thought to indicate debris, of which 3/19 are planet-hosting stars and 1/17 are stars with no current planet detections. Given the small numbers involved, there is no evidence that the disc detection rate around stars with planets is different to that around stars without planets. Our detections provide a clear indication that large quantities of dusty material can survive the stars' main-sequence lifetime and be detected on the subgiant branch, with important implications for the evolution of planetary systems and observations of polluted or dusty white dwarfs. Our detection rates also provide an important constraint that can be included in models of debris disc evolution.Comment: 12 pages, MNRAS, accepte

Obesity, Self-Complexity, and Compartmentalization: On the Implications of Obesity for Self-Concept Organization

    Get PDF
The relationship between obesity and structural aspects of the self-concept was examined in adult women. Participants were 119 adult women [age range: 18-73, M=26.9; body mass index (BMI) range: 16.2-54.7, M=27.3] who completed measures of self-esteem, self-complexity, and the spontaneous self-concept. BMI was associated with less complex and more compartmentalized self-knowledge and more frequent mention of weight-stereotypic traits as self-descriptive. The findings are discussed in the context of research on obesity- related stigma

A Guide to Legal Research in the University of Michigan Law Library (3rd ed.)

In preparing this revision of the Guide to Legal Research in the University of Michigan Law Library, we have followed respectfully the precepts established in previous editions. As before, the Guide has been written to be primarily of benefit to the students at the University of Michigan School of Law. We hope, however, that it will also be helpful to anyone who uses this collection extensively. It is not meant to be a comprehensive treatise on all, or even a few, forms of legal research. That has been done elsewhere, many times, and need not be repeated here. Instead, our purpose has been to give our readers a thorough listing of this library\u27s services and rules, a basic overview of American legal research, and a succinct explanation of some of the more important, or baffling, aspects of legal research. All of this is related, of course, to this library; consequently, we have devoted little space to describing material that we do not have

Retail Patterns Across Nebraska, a 10-Year Perspective

    Get PDF
Retail activity is very dynamic and highly variable, across both time and space. We have been following total retail activity, using taxable retail sales from the Nebraska Department of Revenue as a proxy for many years. Over time, we have witnessed the continuing trend towards increasing concentration of retail activity in the larger trade centers and urban communities, and away from rural and small trade centers. While state sales tax data provides some clear perspectives on overall changes and trends, even down to town and county levels, details as to the specific type of retail activity is precluded

Alaskan Submarine Cables: A Struggle with a Harsh Environment

    Get PDF
Reviews the laying, repair and maintenance of telegraph and cable systems, at one time 86 submarine cables, between Puget Sound and Alaska 1901-60. Failures due to entanglement by whales, bruising and mauling by anchors and fishing trawls and various destructive effects of geologic agents on the sea floor are noted. In straits on the continental shelf and upper continental slope, cable failures are attributed primarily to chafe by bottom currents and, off the mouths of major streams, to turbidity currents and gravitational slides. Cable repair data for 1903-58 are tabulated, showing reported causes. Some cables at depths of 1000-1500 fathoms on the continental margin cross at least 40 major canyons, but have never failed because of turbidity currents; this indicates a lapse of 2000, possibly 5000 yr since such currents occurred in this region.

Estimating the Value of Medal Success at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games

We estimate Canadians’ willingness to pay (WTP) for success by Team Canada in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Canadian government subsidized elite athletes in the run up to the 2010 Games through the Own the Podium program, which was designed to increase Canada’s medal count. WTP estimates from a contingent valuation method (CVM) study using data from nationally representative surveys before and after the Games suggest that Own the Podium generated intangible benefits of between 3 and 5 times its cost. The aggregate value of the intangible benefits generated by the program was between 719millionand719 million and 3.4 billion. Key Words: Olympic Games, contingent valuation method, willingness to pay
