    REIMR: A Process for Utilizing Propulsion-Oriented 'Lessons-Learned' to Mitigate Development Risk

    This paper is a summary overview of a study conducted a t the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) during the initial phases of the Space Launch Initiative (SLI) program to evaluate a large number of technical problems associated with the design, development, test, evaluation and operation of several major liquid propellant rocket engine systems (i.e., SSME, Fastrac, J-2, F-1). The results of this study was the identification of the "Fundamental Root Causes" that enabled the technical problems to manifest, and practices that can be implemented to prevent them from recurring in future engine development efforts. This paper will discus the Fundamental Root Causes, cite some examples of how the technical problems arose from them, and provide a discussion of how they can be mitigated or avoided

    Impact of uncertainty on modeling and testing

    A thorough understanding of the uncertainties associated with the modeling and testing of the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) Engine will greatly aid decisions concerning hardware performance and future development efforts. This report will describe the determination of the uncertainties in the modeling and testing of the Space Shuttle Main Engine test program at the Technology Test Bed facility at Marshall Space Flight Center. Section 2 will present a summary of the uncertainty analysis methodology used and discuss the specific applications to the TTB SSME test program. Section 3 will discuss the application of the uncertainty analysis to the test program and the results obtained. Section 4 presents the results of the analysis of the SSME modeling effort from an uncertainty analysis point of view. The appendices at the end of the report contain a significant amount of information relative to the analysis, including discussions of venturi flowmeter data reduction and uncertainty propagation, bias uncertainty documentations, technical papers published, the computer code generated to determine the venturi uncertainties, and the venturi data and results used in the analysis

    INTRODUCTION: Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells with around 6000 new cases per year in the UK. Cyclophosphamide plus prednisolone is considered a standard of care for disease and symptom control in the advanced relapsed or refractory myeloma setting within the UK NHS. The selective nuclear export inhibitor, selinexor, has been relatively well tolerated in previous clinical trials and offers promise when used in combination with a wide range of other anti-cancer treatments. Here, we investigate if the addition of selinexor can improve responses to cyclophosphamide plus prednisolone without adding prohibitive toxicity. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: MUKtwelve is a UK-based, randomised, controlled, open, parallel group, multicentre phase II trial designed to evaluate clinical efficacy of selinexor in combination with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone (SCP) in patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. A calibration arm will receive cyclophosphamide and prednisolone alone (CP). Participants who experience disease progression on the CP arm may, if eligible, receive SCP.The MUKtwelve trial results will be the first to assess clinical efficacy of selinexor with low-dose CP in relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. It is widely accepted that the relapsing-remitting nature of the disease is accompanied by cellular changes that often result in the requirement for novel agents and drug combinations to regain disease control. Patients also often experience cumulative toxicities throughout their treatments, limiting the treatment intensity that can be given at relapse. Thus, there is a need for novel effective combination therapies with acceptable toxicity profiles. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is obtained.     Common structure in the heterogeneity of plant-matter decay

    Carbon removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis is released back by respiration. Although some organic carbon is degraded quickly, older carbon persists; consequently carbon stocks are much larger than predicted by initial decomposition rates. This disparity can be traced to a wide range of first-order decay-rate constants, but the rate distributions and the mechanisms that determine them are unknown. Here, we pose and solve an inverse problem to find the rate distributions corresponding to the decomposition of plant matter throughout North America. We find that rate distributions are lognormal, with a mean and variance that depend on climatic conditions and substrate. Changes in temperature and precipitation scale all rates similarly, whereas the initial substrate composition sets the time scale of faster rates. These findings probably result from the interplay of stochastic processes and biochemical kinetics, suggesting that the intrinsic variability of decomposers, substrate and environment results in a predictable distribution of rates. Within this framework, turnover times increase exponentially with the kinetic heterogeneity of rates, thereby providing a theoretical expression for the persistence of recalcitrant organic carbon in the natural environment

    On the Relationship Between Ultrasonic and Micro-Structural Properties of Imperfect Interfaces in Layered Solids

    The interaction of ultrasonic waves with interfaces formed by two non-conforming, rough surfaces in contact has been the subject of numerous investigations [1–10]. The motivations behind these studies have been various: from the assessment of the real area of contact between two rough surfaces [1], to the modeling of crack closure near the tip of a fatigue crack [4]; from the identification of the nature of interfacial imperfections in kissing and partial bonds [6], to the generation of ultrasonic waves [8]. In most of these studies, the characterization of the interfacial properties has been attempted by studying the reflection of longitudinal and shears waves at normal incidence. Only recently, the problem concerning the interaction of ultrasonic waves with realistic complex systems such as that formed by two neighboring imperfect interfaces has been addressed. Lavrentyev and Rokhlin [9, 10] used ultrasonic spectroscopy to evaluate the interfacial conditions from the spectra of longitudinal and shear waves reflected normally from the interfaces

    A hypothetico-deductive approach to assessing the social function of chemical signalling in a non-territorial solitary carnivore

    The function of chemical signalling in non-territorial solitary carnivores is still relatively unclear. Studies on territorial solitary and social carnivores have highlighted odour capability and utility, however the social function of chemical signalling in wild carnivore populations operating dominance hierarchy social systems has received little attention. We monitored scent marking and investigatory behaviour of wild brown bears Ursus arctos, to test multiple hypotheses relating to the social function of chemical signalling. Camera traps were stationed facing bear ‘marking trees’ to document behaviour by different age sex classes in different seasons. We found evidence to support the hypothesis that adult males utilise chemical signalling to communicate dominance to other males throughout the non-denning period. Adult females did not appear to utilise marking trees to advertise oestrous state during the breeding season. The function of marking by subadult bears is somewhat unclear, but may be related to the behaviour of adult males. Subadults investigated trees more often than they scent marked during the breeding season, which could be a result of an increased risk from adult males. Females with young showed an increase in marking and investigation of trees outside of the breeding season. We propose the hypothesis that females engage their dependent young with marking trees from a young age, at a relatively ‘safe’ time of year. Memory, experience, and learning at a young age, may all contribute towards odour capabilities in adult bears

    The Effectiveness of Support and Rehabilitation Services for Women Offenders

    There is a large body of research evidence suggesting that support, rehabilitation, and supervision programs can help offenders to reduce recidivism. However, the effectiveness of these services is dependent upon the extent to which the workers who deliver them comply with "what works" principles and practices. Because most of this research has been conducted with men, this study focused on the extent to which these principles and practices apply to women. In particular, the study examined services offered to a group of women in prison in Victoria, Australia, and following their release to the community; and the relationship between these women's views about the services, recidivism, and the characteristics of the services. Results were generally consistent with earlier research. The women favoured services that are delivered by workers who are reliable, holistic, collaborative, who understand the women's perspective, and that focus on strengths. They did not support services that challenged the women, focused on their offences, or on the things they did badly
