    What We Want, Why We Want It: K-12 Educators' Evidence Use to Support their Grant Proposals

    This study analyzed educators’ requests for grant funding to purchase desired educational resources or services. Specifically, it examined to what extent, and how, educators utilized research and other forms of evidence to support their decision-making. References to research were sparse, though applicants sometimes referred to local data or small-scale trials. Conceptual research use likely also lurked beneath certain statements. Applicant educators also showed special concern for certaintopics, including student engagement/motivation and enhancing the cultural relevance of programming. The proposals varied considerably in terms of the robustness of underlying theories of action. This line of inquiry contributes to understandings both regarding a) educators’ use of research and other knowledge sources to support their professional decision-making; and b) the nature of evidence use in education

    Rangeland Ecosystem Services: Improving Decisions with a Systematic Approach

    Delivering ecosystem services from rangelands represents a unique challenge. While social, ecological and economic complexity and diversity often lend stability to rangeland systems, the broad array of services, users and connections makes the process of identifying what services to manage for, which management practices are most effective and how to deliver them challenging. In addition, lag times between management changes and responses, climatic variability and changes in demand can further complicate decision-making. We propose a structured process that includes: (1) inventory of existing conditions; (2) identification of relevant scenarios; (3) stakeholder involvement; and (4) monitoring for verification based on the unique nature of rangelands as complex socio-ecological systems. Our objectives are to improve the quality of management planning and implementation by land managers, better inform the policies and programs that assist managers and to enhance the credibility of delivery systems. The goal of this approach is to improve sustainability by expanding the mix of ecosystem services rangelands can deliver and stabilizing income to support people who depend on rangelands

    Interior Least Tern Powerline Collision on the Lower Platte River

    Collisions with electrical powerlines are a well-known documented cause of avian mortality (Avian Power Line Interaction Committee [APLIC] 1994, Savereno et al. 1996). Mortality caused by collisions with powerlines can be an important concern for many bird species, but is a serious conservation problem for threatened and endangered species because any mortality can have biological and legal ramifications (Janss 2000). Loss of individuals, particularly breeding adults, from an already small population may impede a species’ recovery by reducing reproduction and recruitment into the breeding population. The death of an individual from a threatened or endangered species as a result of a collision may constitute “take” as defined by the federal Endangered Species Act (1973; 16 U.S.C. 1531–1544.) and the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (1918; 16 U.S.C. 703–712). Companies and/or individuals may be prosecuted when powerline collisions occur, particularly if recommendations intended to reduce the risk of collision, provided by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) regarding the placement of the powerlines, have not been followed

    This document reports on our monitoring, research, management, and outreach activities during the past 12 months (2013–2014). We prepared it to inform our partners, cooperating agencies, funding sources, and other interested parties of our activities and to provide a preliminary summary of our results. The lower Platte River and its major tributaries provide important nesting and migratory stopover habitat for two bird species of special conservation concern: the state and federally endangered Interior Least Tern (Sternula antillarum athalassos) and threatened Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus). The Tern and Plover Conservation Partnership (TPCP), based at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln School of Natural Resources, and Nongame Bird Program (NBP), based at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC), work cooperatively on tern and plover monitoring, research, management, and outreach activities in Nebraska. The TPCP and NBP focus monitoring and research efforts along the Lower Platte, Loup, and Elkhorn rivers in the eastern part of the state. We also work on tern and plover issues across the state, including Lake McConaughy, and the region. The report is divided into five sections: 1. Introduction—describes the project area and summarizes conditions encountered during the 2014 field season. 2. Monitoring—describes the data we collect every year for basic demographic analyses and includes the number of nests and chicks found in the focus area. These data are collected and summarized in a form that allows comparison across the ranges of both species. 3. Research—describes our research objectives, research methods, data collection, and data analyses. 4. Management—describes our actions intended to protect Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers and their nests from interference and disturbance. 5. Outreach—describes our efforts to increase public awareness and understanding of Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers and to promote environmental literacy

    Pathogenic, Molecular, and Immunological Properties of a Virus Associated with Sea Turtle Fibropapillomatosis. Phase II : Viral Pathogenesis and Development of Diagnostic Assays

    Research conducted under this RWO from July 1, 1997 through June 30, 2000 has provided important new information about the pathogenesis, virology, and immunology of marine turtle fibropapillomatosis. In particular, we have provided strong evidence for the association of a herpesvirus with fibropapillomatosis of the green turtle,Chelonia mydas, and the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta, in Florida. In addition we have provided new evidence for the absence of papillomaviruses from sea turtle fibropapillomas. Although unsuccessful, important new attempts were made to cultivate the FP-associated herpesvirus in vitro in collaboration with the National Wildlife Health Center. During this period of time, we completed publication of the first comprehensive description of the comparative pathology and pathogenesis of experimentally induced and spontaneous fibropapillomas of green turtles (Chelonia mydas). We initiated innovative studies on the persistence of a Chelonian herpesviruses in the marine environment demonstrating for the first time that the environmental survivability of Chelonian herpesviruses makes them real threats to marine turtle health. Finally, we explored development of a serological assay for FP using synthetic herpesvirus peptides and developed methodologies for detection of antibodies to LETV [Iung-eye-trachea virus] a disease-associated herpesvirus of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas.. This last initiative is ongoing and will further our efforts to develop specific immunological assays for the FP-associated herpesvirus and FP. (17 page document
