    STANDARDIZED THROUGH-WALL DISTRIBUTIONS OF DISSIMILAR METAL WELD RESIDUAL STRESS

    ABSTRACT The residual stresses imparted by the welding process are a principal factor in the process of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of Alloy 82/182 nickel-alloy (i.e., dissimilar metal or DM) piping butt welds in PWRs. While Section XI of the ASME Code requires that residual stresses are considered in crack growth calculations, there is little guidance or requirement on how to calculate them. Analytical models are frequently used to simulate the welding process in order to predict the residual stress distribution in the weld and base material as an input to crack growth calculations. The crack growth calculations, in turn, have demonstrated a high sensitivity to the welding residual stress distribution inputs. While significant progress has been made in understanding and reducing the variability in calculated residual stress among modelers as well as the variability in measured residual stress among different techniques, there remains some uncertainty regarding any given measured or calculated distribution. A feasible alternative to calculating through-wall stress distributions with analytical models on a case-by-case basis is to develop a set of standardized through-wall stress distributions that are applicable to DM welds. Examples of standardized through-wall distributions for residual stress are found in numerous consensus code and standards. The benefit of established through-wall stress distributions is that evaluations for flaws in welds would start from a uniform basis on one of the key inputs to the crack growth calculation, reducing the time required to perform and review flaw evaluations. This paper presents and describes the technical basis for a set of through-wall distributions for common DM welds found in the US nuclear industry. The basis of the distributions include the results of analytical models, including uncertainty, as well as measured data for through-wall stress in DM welds. INTRODUCTION Appendix C to Section XI of the ASME Code is used to evaluate flaws in piping components, including flaw growth due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). When calculating flaw growth due to SCC, Section XI Appendix C states that sustained loads and residual stresses should be considered. It is also stated that appropriate experimental data on the residual stress distribution for different pipe sizes should be used when possible. Outside of this discussion, there is no further guidance provided in the ASME Code for residual stress. When considering flaw growth due to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) of nickel-based alloy welds, the residual stresses due to welding form a key aspect of the loads that lead to flaw growth.     The UltraViolet Imaging of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Fields (UVCANDELS) survey is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Cycle-26 Treasury Program, allocated in total 164 orbits of primary Wide-Field Camera 3 Ultraviolet and Visible light F275W imaging with coordinated parallel Advanced Camera for Surveys F435W imaging, on four of the five premier extragalactic survey fields: GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS. We introduce this survey by presenting a thorough search for galaxies at z2.4z\gtrsim2.4 that leak significant Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation, as well as a stringent constraint on the LyC escape fraction (fescf_{\rm esc}) from stacking the UV images of a population of star-forming galaxies with secure redshifts. Our extensive search for LyC emission and stacking analysis benefit from the catalogs of high-quality spectroscopic redshifts compiled from archival ground-based data and HST slitless spectroscopy, carefully vetted by dedicated visual inspection efforts. We report a sample of five galaxies as individual LyC leaker candidates, showing fescrel60%f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}\gtrsim60\% estimated using detailed Monte Carlo analysis of intergalactic medium attenuation. We develop a robust stacking method to apply to five samples of in total 85 non-detection galaxies in the redshift range of z[2.4,3.7]z\in[2.4,3.7]. Most stacks give tight 2-σ\sigma upper limits below fescrel<6%f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}<6\%. A stack for a subset of 32 emission-line galaxies shows tentative LyC leakage detected at 2.9-σ\sigma, indicating fescrel=5.7%f_{\rm esc}^{\rm rel}=5.7\% at z2.65z\sim2.65, supporting the key role of such galaxies in contributing to the cosmic reionization and maintaining the UV ionization background.     Molecular Ecology and Natural History of Simian Foamy Virus Infection in Wild-Living Chimpanzees

    Identifying microbial pathogens with zoonotic potential in wild-living primates can be important to human health, as evidenced by human immunodeficiency viruses types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2) and Ebola virus. Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) are ancient retroviruses that infect Old and New World monkeys and apes. Although not known to cause disease, these viruses are of public health interest because they have the potential to infect humans and thus provide a more general indication of zoonotic exposure risks. Surprisingly, no information exists concerning the prevalence, geographic distribution, and genetic diversity of SFVs in wild-living monkeys and apes. Here, we report the first comprehensive survey of SFVcpz infection in free-ranging chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) using newly developed, fecal-based assays. Chimpanzee fecal samples (n = 724) were collected at 25 field sites throughout equatorial Africa and tested for SFVcpz-specific antibodies (n = 706) or viral nucleic acids (n = 392). SFVcpz infection was documented at all field sites, with prevalence rates ranging from 44% to 100%. In two habituated communities, adult chimpanzees had significantly higher SFVcpz infection rates than infants and juveniles, indicating predominantly horizontal rather than vertical transmission routes. Some chimpanzees were co-infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIVcpz); however, there was no evidence that SFVcpz and SIVcpz were epidemiologically linked. SFVcpz nucleic acids were recovered from 177 fecal samples, all of which contained SFVcpz RNA and not DNA. Phylogenetic analysis of partial gag (616 bp), pol-RT (717 bp), and pol-IN (425 bp) sequences identified a diverse group of viruses, which could be subdivided into four distinct SFVcpz lineages according to their chimpanzee subspecies of origin. Within these lineages, there was evidence of frequent superinfection and viral recombination. One chimpanzee was infected by a foamy virus from a Cercopithecus monkey species, indicating cross-species transmission of SFVs in the wild. These data indicate that SFVcpz (i) is widely distributed among all chimpanzee subspecies; (ii) is shed in fecal samples as viral RNA; (iii) is transmitted predominantly by horizontal routes; (iv) is prone to superinfection and recombination; (v) has co-evolved with its natural host; and (vi) represents a sensitive marker of population structure that may be useful for chimpanzee taxonomy and conservation strategies

    Gene Expression Profiles of the NCI-60 Human Tumor Cell Lines Define Molecular Interaction Networks Governing Cell Migration Processes

    Although there is extensive information on gene expression and molecular interactions in various cell types, integrating those data in a functionally coherent manner remains challenging. This study explores the premise that genes whose expression at the mRNA level is correlated over diverse cell lines are likely to function together in a network of molecular interactions. We previously derived expression-correlated gene clusters from the database of the NCI-60 human tumor cell lines and associated each cluster with function categories of the Gene Ontology (GO) database. From a cluster rich in genes associated with GO categories related to cell migration, we extracted 15 genes that were highly cross-correlated; prominent among them were RRAS, AXL, ADAM9, FN14, and integrin-beta1. We then used those 15 genes as bait to identify other correlated genes in the NCI-60 database. A survey of current literature disclosed, not only that many of the expression-correlated genes engaged in molecular interactions related to migration, invasion, and metastasis, but that highly cross-correlated subsets of those genes engaged in specific cell migration processes. We assembled this information in molecular interaction maps (MIMs) that depict networks governing 3 cell migration processes: degradation of extracellular matrix, production of transient focal complexes at the leading edge of the cell, and retraction of the rear part of the cell. Also depicted are interactions controlling the release and effects of calcium ions, which may regulate migration in a spaciotemporal manner in the cell. The MIMs and associated text comprise a detailed and integrated summary of what is currently known or surmised about the role of the expression cross-correlated genes in molecular networks governing those processes

    The Ultraviolet Luminosity Function at 0.6 < z < 1 from UVCANDELS

    UVCANDELS is a Hubble Space Telescope Cycle-26 Treasury Program awarded 164 orbits of primary ultraviolet (UV) F275W imaging and coordinated parallel optical F435W imaging in four CANDELS fields—GOODS-N, GOODS-S, EGS, and COSMOS—covering a total area of ∼426 arcmin2. This is ∼2.7 times larger than the area covered by previous deep-field space UV data combined, reaching a depth of about 27 and 28 ABmag (5σ in 0.”2 apertures) for F275W and F435W, respectively. Along with new photometric catalogs, we present an analysis of the rest-frame UV luminosity function (LF), relying on our UV-optimized aperture photometry method, yielding a factor of 1.5 increase over H-isophot aperture photometry in the signal-to-noise ratios of galaxies in our F275W imaging. Using well-tested photometric redshift measurements, we identify 5810 galaxies at redshifts 0.6 &lt; z &lt; 1, down to an absolute magnitude of M UV = −14.2. In order to minimize the effect of uncertainties in estimating the completeness function, especially at the faint end, we restrict our analysis to sources above 30% completeness, which provides a final sample of 4726 galaxies at −21.5 &lt; M UV &lt; −15.5. We performed a maximum likelihood estimate to derive the best-fit parameters of the UV LF. We report a best-fit faint-end slope of α=−1.359−0.041+0.041 at z ∼ 0.8. Creating subsamples at z ∼ 0.7 and z ∼ 0.9, we observe a possible evolution of α with redshift. The unobscured UV luminosity density at M UV &lt; −10 is derived as ρUV=1.339−0.030+0.027(×1026ergs−1Hz−1Mpc−3) using our best-fit LF parameters.
