Feasibility of making sound power measurements in the NASA Langley V/STOL tunnel test section
Based on exploratory acoustic measurements in Langley's V/STOL wind tunnel, recommendations are made on the methodology for making sound power measurements of aircraft components in the closed tunnel test section. During airflow, tunnel self-noise and microphone flow-induced noise place restrictions on the amplitude and spectrum of the sound source to be measured. Models of aircraft components with high sound level sources, such as thrust engines and powered lift systems, seem likely candidates for acoustic testing
Study of radar pulse compression for high resolution satellite altimetry
Pulse compression techniques are studied which are applicable to a satellite altimeter having a topographic resolution of + 10 cm. A systematic design procedure is used to determine the system parameters. The performance of an optimum, maximum likelihood processor is analysed, which provides the basis for modifying the standard split-gate tracker to achieve improved performance. Bandwidth considerations lead to the recommendation of a full deramp STRETCH pulse compression technique followed by an analog filter bank to separate range returns. The implementation of the recommended technique is examined

High Angular Resolution Observations of the Collimated Jet Source Associated with a Massive Protostar in IRAS 16547-4247
A triple radio source recently detected in association with the luminous
infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has been studied with high angular resolution
and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array at 3.6 and 2 cm. Our
observations confirm the interpretation that the central object is a thermal
radio jet, while the two outer lobes are most probably heavily obscured HH
objects. The thermal radio jet is resolved angularly for the first time and
found to align closely with the outer lobes. The opening angle of the thermal
jet is estimated to be , confirming that collimated outflows can
also be present in massive protostars. The proper motions of the outer lobes
should be measurable over timescales of a few years. Several fainter sources
detected in the region are most probably associated with other stars in a young
cluster.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
