    Study of radar pulse compression for high resolution satellite altimetry

    Pulse compression techniques are studied which are applicable to a satellite altimeter having a topographic resolution of + 10 cm. A systematic design procedure is used to determine the system parameters. The performance of an optimum, maximum likelihood processor is analysed, which provides the basis for modifying the standard split-gate tracker to achieve improved performance. Bandwidth considerations lead to the recommendation of a full deramp STRETCH pulse compression technique followed by an analog filter bank to separate range returns.     Medium Modifications of Hadron Properties and Partonic Processes

    Chiral symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in QCD. It is closely connected to hadron properties in the nuclear medium via the reduction of the quark condensate , manifesting the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. To better understand this important issue, a number of Jefferson Lab experiments over the past decade have focused on understanding properties of mesons and nucleons in the nuclear medium, often benefiting from the high polarization and luminosity of the CEBAF accelerator. In particular, a novel, accurate, polarization transfer measurement technique revealed for the first time a strong indication that the bound proton electromagnetic form factors in 4He may be modified compared to those in the vacuum. Second, the photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been measured via their decay to e+e- to study possible in-medium effects on the properties of the rho meson. In this experiment, no significant mass shift and some broadening consistent with expected collisional broadening for the rho meson has been observed, providing tight constraints on model calculations. Finally, processes involving in-medium parton propagation have been studied. The medium modifications of the quark fragmentation functions have been extracted with much higher statistical accuracy than previously possible.Comment: to appear in J. Phys.: Conf. Proc.     Thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the layered triangular magnet NaNiO2

    We report muon-spin rotation, heat capacity, magnetization, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of the layered spin-1/2 antiferromagnet NaNiO2. These show the onset of long-range magnetic order below T_N = 19.5K. Rapid muon depolarization persisting to about 5K above T_N is consistent with the presence of short-range magnetic order. The temperature and frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility suggests that magnetic clusters persist above 25K in the paramagnetic state and that their volume fraction decreases with increasing temperature. A frequency dependent peak in the ac magnetic susceptibility at T_sf = 3K is observed, consistent with a slowing of spin fluctuations at this temperature. A partial magnetic phase diagram is deduced.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Purpose: Sternal wound infection (SWI) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in post-operative cardiac patients. We aimed to describe the burden, risk factors and outcomes of SWI in post-operative paediatric cardiac patients at a tertiary children’s hospital.Methods: We conducted a retrospective record review of cardiac surgeries via median sternotomy over a 5-year period to identify cases of SWI.Results: Between 2011 and 2016, 1 319 patients underwent median sternotomy. Thirty four (2.6%) patients developed SWI; 18 (13%) patients developed deep sternal wound infection (DSWI), and 16 (12%) developed superficial sternal wound infections (SSWI). Twenty two (16%) of SWIs were apparent within a week postsurgery before discharge, and the remaining were readmitted post-discharge. Seven (0.5%) patients died from complications.Conclusion: Significant morbidity was associated with SWI. Furthermore, with a mortality rate of 20% in the case of DSWI, we strongly support quality improvement procedures such as the Sternal Wound Prevention Bundle (SWPB) that was introduced in late 2014. However, the rate of SWI implies that ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the SWPB is necessary and more stringent adherence to the protocol may result in better outcomes

    Anomalous temperature evolution of the internal magnetic field distribution in the charge-ordered triangular antiferromagnet AgNiO2

    Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements of the frustrated triangular quantum magnet AgNiO2 are consistent with a model of charge disproportionation that has been advanced to explain the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. Below an ordering temperature of T_N=19.9(2) K we observe six distinct muon precession frequencies, due to the magnetic order, which can be accounted for with a model describing the probable muon sites. The precession frequencies show an unusual temperature evolution which is suggestive of the separate evolution of two opposing magnetic sublattices.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Muon-fluorine entangled states in molecular magnets

    The information accessible from a muon-spin relaxation experiment is often limited since we lack knowledge of the precise muon stopping site. We demonstrate here the possibility of localizing a spin polarized muon in a known stopping state in a molecular material containing fluorine. The muon-spin precession that results from the entangled nature of the muon-spin and surrounding nuclear spins is sensitive to the nature of the stopping site and we use this property to identify three classes of site. We are also able to describe the extent to which the muon distorts its surroundings.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
