Improving the Single Scalar Consistency Relation

We propose a test of single-scalar inflation based on using the well-measured scalar power spectrum to reconstruct the tensor power spectrum, up to a single integration constant. Our test is a sort of integrated version of the single-scalar consistency relation. This sort of test can be used effectively, even when the tensor power spectrum is measured too poorly to resolve the tensor spectral index. We give an example using simulated data based on a hypothetical detection with tensor-to-scalar ratio r=0.01r = 0.01. Our test can also be employed for correlating scalar and tensor features in the far future when the data is good.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure, uses LaTeX2e version 2 extensively revised for publicatio

Biomechanical performance of polycaprolactone (PCL)-based scaffold with rhBMP-2 in a sheep thoracic spine fusion model

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a complex three dimensional deformity affecting 2-3% of the general population. Resulting spine deformities include progressive coronal curvature, hypokyphosis, or frank lordosis in the thoracic spine and vertebral rotation in the axial plane with posterior elements turned into the curve concavity. The potential for curve progression is heightened during the adolescent growth spurt. Success of scoliosis deformity correction depends on solid bony fusion between adjacent vertebrae after the intervertebral discs have been surgically cleared and the disc spaces filled with graft material. Problems with bone graft harvest site morbidity as well as limited bone availability have led to the search for bone graft substitutes. Recently, a bioactive and resorbable scaffold fabricated from medical grade polycaprolactone (PCL) has been developed for bone regeneration at load bearing sites. Combined with recombinant human bone morphogenic protein–2 (rhBMP-2), this has been shown to be successful in acting as a bone graft substitute in acting as a bone graft substitute in a porcine lumbar interbody fusion model when compared to autologous bone graft. This in vivo sheep study intends to evaluate the suitability of a custom designed medical grade PCL scaffold in combination with rhBMP-2 as a bone graft substitute in the setting of mini–thoracotomy surgery as a platform for ongoing research to benefit patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

The experiences, needs and outcomes for carers of people with dementia: Literature Review

    Get PDF
This literature review was conducted as part of my role at the Association of Dementia Studies, University of Worcester.RSAS is developing new and innovative ways of supporting carers, people living with dementia and their families. The charity aims to enhance the health and well-being of carers through providing services that increase their knowledge and understanding of dementia, further enhances their caring skills and provides supportive and therapeutic services to them. This literature review provides an up-to-date review concerning the evidence in relation to the following questions: 1 What is the experience of caregiving for a person living with dementia, and in what context does caregiving take place? 2 What implications does caregiving have for the person/family member involved in caregiving and the person with dementia? 3 What is currently known about the factors that protect or increase the risk of poor outcomes in caregiving? 4 What evidence is there for interventions to support family caregiving and reduce the risk of poor outcomes and how is this delivered in relation to: a Information and Education b Multi-component, psycho-educational interventions c Psychological Interventions d Peer support and other social interventions e Assistive technology and new media 5 What form of service provision is required to support family caregivers? This will include consideration of such issues as: a How might a service be delivered? b What factors will influence delivery including location, design, accessibility and flexibility? 6 Who will the service be for and how can family caregivers be supported to engage with the service

Low-Temperature Spin Diffusion in a Spin-Polarized Fermi Gas

    We present a finite temperature calculation of the transverse spin-diffusion coefficient, DD_\bot, in a dilute degenerate Fermi gas in the presence of a small external magnetic field, HH. While the longitudinal diffusion coefficient displays the conventional low-temperature Fermi-liquid behavior, DT2D_\parallel \propto T^{-2}, the corresponding results for DD_\bot show three separate regimes: (a) DH2D_\bot \sim H^{-2} for THT \ll H; (b) DT2D_\bot \sim T^{-2}, D/D1D_\bot /D_\parallel \neq 1 for THT \gg H and large spin-rotation parameter ξ1\xi \gg 1, and (c) D=DT2D_\bot = D_\parallel \propto T^{-2} for THT \gg H and ξ1\xi \ll 1. Our results are qualitatively consistent with the available experimental data in weakly spin-polarized 3He^3{\rm He} and 3He4He^3{\rm He} - ^4{\rm He} mixtures.Comment: 13 pages, REVTEX, 3 figures available upon request, RU-94-4

Using appreciative inquiry to implement person-centred dementia care in hospital wards

    Get PDF
The quality of care of persons with dementia in hospitals is not optimal and can be challenging. Moreover, staff may find difficulty in translating what they have learned during training into practice. This paper report the development and evaluation of a set of workshops using an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) approach to implement person-centred dementia care in two hospital wards. Staff worked collaboratively to develop a ward vision and to implement a number of action plans. Using AI approach, staff attitudes towards persons with dementia improved, inter-professional collaboration was enhanced and small changes in staff practices were noted. Dementia care in hospitals can be enhanced by empowering staff to take small but concrete actions after they engage in AI workshops, during which they are listened to and appreciated for what they can contribute
