    Stellar Feedback in the ISM Revealed by Wide-Field Far-Infrared Spectral-Imaging

    The radiative and mechanical interaction of stars with their environment drives the evolution of the ISM and of galaxies as a whole. The far-IR emission (lambda ~30 to 350 microns) from atoms and molecules dominates the cooling of the warm gas in the neutral ISM, the material that ultimately forms stars. Far-IR lines are thus the most sensitive probes of stellar feedback processes, and allow us to quantify the deposition and cycling of energy in the ISM. While ALMA (in the (sub)mm) and JWST (in the IR) provide astonishing sub-arcsecond resolution images of point sources and their immediate environment, they cannot access the main interstellar gas coolants, nor are they designed to image entire star-forming regions (SFRs). Herschel far-IR photometric images of the interstellar dust thermal emission revealed the ubiquitous large-scale filamentary structure of SFRs, their mass content, and the location of thousands of prestellar cores and protostars. These images, however, provide a static view of the ISM: not only they dont constrain the cloud dynamics, moreover they cannot reveal the chemical composition and energy transfer within the cloud, thus giving little insight into the regulation process of star formation by stellar feedback.     Accuracy of computerized tomography in determining hepatic tumor size in patients receiving liver transplantation or resection

    Computerized tomography (CT) of liver is used in oncologic practice for staging tumors, evaluating response to treatment, and screening patients for hepatic resection. Because of the impact of CT liver scan on major treatment decisions, it is important to assess its accuracy. Patients undergoing liver transplantation or resection provide a unique opportunity to test the accuracy of hepatic-imaging techniques by comparison of finding of preoperative CT scan with those at gross pathologic examination of resected specimens. Forty-one patients who had partial hepatic resection (34 patients) or liver transplantation (eight patients) for malignant (30 patients) or benign (11 patients) tumors were evaluable. Eight (47%) of 17 patients with primary malignant liver tumors, four (31%) of 13 patients with metastatic liver tumors, and two (20%) of 10 patients with benign liver tumors had tumor nodules in resected specimens that were not apparent on preoperative CT studies. These nodules varied in size from 0.1 to 1.6 cm. While 11 of 14 of these nodules were 1.0 cm. These results suggest that conventional CT alone may be insufficient to accurately determine the presence or absence of liver metastases, extent of liver involvement, or response of hepatic metastases to treatment

Meer opbrengstgerichte scholen blijken betere prestaties te boeken dan scholen die deze aanpak van OGW niet of nog minder in de praktijk brengen. In verband daarmee is het wenselijk dat aanstaande leraren basisonderwijs tijdens hun initiële opleiding ook gedegen worden voorbereid op zich de veranderende beroepspraktijk en zich de theorie en praktijk van OGW eigen te maken.     A Computational Comparison of Optimization Methods for the Golomb Ruler Problem

    The Golomb ruler problem is defined as follows: Given a positive integer n, locate n marks on a ruler such that the distance between any two distinct pair of marks are different from each other and the total length of the ruler is minimized. The Golomb ruler problem has applications in information theory, astronomy and communications, and it can be seen as a challenge for combinatorial optimization algorithms. Although constructing high quality rulers is well-studied, proving optimality is a far more challenging task. In this paper, we provide a computational comparison of different optimization paradigms, each using a different model (linear integer, constraint programming and quadratic integer) to certify that a given Golomb ruler is optimal. We propose several enhancements to improve the computational performance of each method by exploring bound tightening, valid inequalities, cutting planes and branching strategies. We conclude that a certain quadratic integer programming model solved through a Benders decomposition and strengthened by two types of valid inequalities performs the best in terms of solution time for small-sized Golomb ruler problem instances. On the other hand, a constraint programming model improved by range reduction and a particular branching strategy could have more potential to solve larger size instances due to its promising parallelization features

    Post-translocational folding of secretory proteins in Gram-positive bacteria

    AbstractThe transport of proteins from their site of synthesis in the cytoplasm to their functional location is an essential characteristic of all living cells. In Gram-positive bacteria the majority of proteins that are translocated across the cytoplasmic membrane are delivered to the membrane–cell wall interface in an essentially unfolded form. They must then be folded into their native configuration in an environment that is dominated by a high density of immobilised negative charge—in essence an ion exchange resin. It is essential to the viability of the cell that these proteins do not block the translocation machinery in the membrane, form illegitimate interactions with the cell wall or, through intermolecular interactions, form insoluble aggregates. Native Gram-positive proteins therefore have intrinsic folding characteristics that facilitate their rapid folding, and this is assisted by a variety of folding factors, including enzymes, peptides and metal ions. Despite these intrinsic and extrinsic factors, secretory proteins do misfold, particularly if the cell is subjected to certain types of stress. Consequently, Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis encode membrane- and cell wall-associated proteases that act as a quality control machine, clearing misfolded or otherwise aberrant proteins from the translocase and the cell wall

    Changes in epidemiological patterns of sea lice infestation on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Scotland between 1996 and 2006

    Analyses of a unique database containing sea lice records over an 11 year period provide evidence of changing infestation patterns in Scotland. The data, collected from more than 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms, indicate that both species of sea lice commonly found in Scotland, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus, have declined on farms over the past decade. Reductions for both species have been particularly marked since 2001 when more effective veterinary medicines became available. Treatment data were also available in the database and these show a growing trend towards the use of the in feed medication emamectin benzoate (Slice), particularly in the first year of the salmon production cycle. However, this trend to wards single product use has not been sustained in 2006, the latest year for which data are available. There is some evidence of region to region variation within Scotland with the Western Isles experiencing higher levels of infestation. However, compared to the levels observed between 1996 and 2000, all regions have benefited from reduced lice infestation, with the overall pattern showing a particular reduction in the second and third quarters of the second year of production

    An investigation into feature effectiveness for multimedia hyperlinking

    The increasing amount of archival multimedia content available online is creating increasing opportunities for users who are interested in exploratory search behaviour such as browsing. The user experience with online collections could therefore be improved by enabling navigation and recommendation within multimedia archives, which can be supported by allowing a user to follow a set of hyperlinks created within or across documents. The main goal of this study is to compare the performance of dierent multimedia features for automatic hyperlink generation. In our work we construct multimedia hyperlinks by indexing and searching textual and visual features extracted from the blip.tv dataset. A user-driven evaluation strategy is then proposed by applying the Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) crowdsourcing platform, since we believe that AMT workers represent a good example of "real world" users. We conclude that textual features exhibit better performance than visual features for multimedia hyperlink construction. In general, a combination of ASR transcripts and metadata provides the best results
