    Lucerne silage (LS) is high in total CP and rumen degraded protein (RDP) but low in fermentable energy, while maize silage (MS) is a good source of fermentable energy but low in RDP. Thus, these silages are complementary and feeding them at optimum ratio should increase nutrient efficiency in lactating cows. Dhiman & Satter (1997) observed greater milk yield when the dietary forage was 2/3 LS and 1/3 MS.     Magneto-optical Kerr effect in Eu1−xCaxB6Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_{6}

    We have measured the magneto-optical Kerr rotation of ferromagnetic Eu1−xCaxB6Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_{6} with x=0.2 and 0.4, as well as of YbB6YbB_{6} serving as the non-magnetic reference material. As previously for EuB6EuB_{6}, we could identify a feature at 1 eVeV in the Kerr response which is related with electronic transitions involving the localized 4f electron states. The absence of this feature in the data for YbB6YbB_{6} confirms the relevance of the partially occupied 4f states in shaping the magneto-optical features of EuEu-based hexaborides. Disorder by CaCa-doping broadens the itinerant charge carrier contribution to the magneto-optical spectra

    Theory and design of Inx_{x}Ga1−x_{1-x}As1−y_{1-y}Biy_{y} mid-infrared semiconductor lasers: type-I quantum wells for emission beyond 3 μ\mum on InP substrates

    We present a theoretical analysis and optimisation of the properties and performance of mid-infrared semiconductor lasers based on the dilute bismide alloy Inx_{x}Ga1−x_{1-x}As1−y_{1-y}Biy_{y}, grown on conventional (001) InP substrates. The ability to independently vary the epitaxial strain and emission wavelength in this quaternary alloy provides significant scope for band structure engineering. Our calculations demonstrate that structures based on compressively strained Inx_{x}Ga1−x_{1-x}As1−y_{1-y}Biy_{y} quantum wells (QWs) can readily achieve emission wavelengths in the 3 -- 5 μ\mum range, and that these QWs have large type-I band offsets. As such, these structures have the potential to overcome a number of limitations commonly associated with this application-rich but technologically challenging wavelength range. By considering structures having (i) fixed QW thickness and variable strain, and (ii) fixed strain and variable QW thickness, we quantify key trends in the properties and performance as functions of the alloy composition, structural properties, and emission wavelength, and on this basis identify routes towards the realisation of optimised devices for practical applications. Our analysis suggests that simple laser structures -- incorporating Inx_{x}Ga1−x_{1-x}As1−y_{1-y}Biy_{y} QWs and unstrained ternary In0.53_{0.53}Ga0.47_{0.47}As barriers -- which are compatible with established epitaxial growth, provide a route to realising InP-based mid-infrared diode lasers.Comment: Submitted versio

    Improved feed protein fractionation schemes for formulating rations with the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System

    Adequate predictions of rumen-degradable protein (RDP) and rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) supplies are necessary to optimize performance while minimizing losses of excess nitrogen (N). The objectives of this study were to evaluate the original Cornell Net Carbohydrate Protein System (CNCPS) protein fractionation scheme and to develop and evaluate alternatives designed to improve its adequacy in predicting RDP and RUP. The CNCPS version 5 fractionates CP into 5 fractions based on solubility in protein precipitant agents, buffers, and detergent solutions: A represents the soluble nonprotein N, B1 is the soluble true protein, B2 represents protein with intermediate rates of degradation, B3 is the CP insoluble in neutral detergent solution but soluble in acid detergent solution, and C is the unavailable N. Model predictions were evaluated with studies that measured N flow data at the omasum. The N fractionation scheme in version 5 of the CNCPS explained 78% of the variation in RDP with a root mean square prediction error (RMSPE) of 275 g/d, and 51% of the RUP variation with RMSPE of 248 g/d. Neutral detergent insoluble CP flows were overpredicted with a mean bias of 128 g/d (40% of the observed mean). The greatest improvements in the accuracy of RDP and RUP predictions were obtained with the following 2 alternative schemes. Alternative 1 used the inhibitory in vitro system to measure the fractional rate of degradation for the insoluble protein fraction in which A = nonprotein N, B1 = true soluble protein, B2 = insoluble protein, C = unavailable protein (RDP: R(2) = 0.84 and RMSPE = 167 g/d; RUP: R(2) = 0.61 and RMSPE = 209 g/d), whereas alternative 2 redefined A and B1 fractions as the non-amino-N and amino-N in the soluble fraction respectively (RDP: R(2) = 0.79 with RMSPE = 195 g/d and RUP: R(2) = 0.54 with RMSPE = 225 g/d). We concluded that implementing alternative 1 or 2 will improve the accuracy of predicting RDP and RUP within the CNCPS framework

    Strong deflection limit of black hole gravitational lensing with arbitrary source distances

    The gravitational field of supermassive black holes is able to strongly bend light rays emitted by nearby sources. When the deflection angle exceeds π\pi, gravitational lensing can be analytically approximated by the so-called strong deflection limit. In this paper we remove the conventional assumption of sources very far from the black hole, considering the distance of the source as an additional parameter in the lensing problem to be treated exactly. We find expressions for critical curves, caustics and all lensing observables valid for any position of the source up to the horizon. After analyzing the spherically symmetric case we focus on the Kerr black hole, for which we present an analytical 3-dimensional description of the higher order caustic tubes.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, appendix added.     Condensed tannins (CT) bind to plant proteins in the rumen, reducing protein degradation to ammonia and increasing milk production and milk protein (e.g. Waghorn, 1987). Previous research showed that the reduced soluble non-protein nitrogen (NPN) content of red clover (Trifolium pratense) silage (RCS) was related to its greater N efficiency relative to lucerne (Medicago sativa) silage (LS) (Broderick et al., 2001). Commercial cultivars of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus; BFT) contain modest levels of CT which reduce NPN formation in silage (Albrecht & Muck, 1991).     Optical evidence for a spin-filter effect in the charge transport of Eu0.6Ca0.4B6Eu_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}B_{6}

    We have measured the optical reflectivity R(ω)R(\omega) of Eu0.6Ca0.4B6Eu_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}B_{6} as a function of temperature between 1.5 and 300 KK and in external magnetic fields up to 7 TT. The slope at the onset of the plasma edge feature in R(ω)R(\omega) increases with decreasing temperature and increasing field but the plasma edge itself does not exhibit the remarkable blue shift that is observed in the binary compound EuB6EuB_{6}. The analysis of the magnetic field dependence of the low temperature optical conductivity spectrum confirms the previously observed exponential decrease of the electrical resistivity upon increasing, field-induced bulk magnetization at constant temperature. In addition, the individual exponential magnetization dependences of the plasma frequency and scattering rate are extracted from the optical data.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let

    VLBI observations of the Crab nebula pulsar

    Observations were made at meter wave-lengths using very long base-line interferometry techniques. At 196.5 MHz no resolution of the pulsar are observed; all the pulse shapes observed with the interferometers are similar to single dish profiles, and all the power pulsates. At 111.5 MHz besides the pulsing power there is always a steady component, presumably due to interstellar scattering. The pulsar is slightly resolved at 111.5 MHz with an apparent angular diameter of 0.07 sec ? 0.01 sec. A 50 percent linear polarization of the time-averaged power is noted at 196.5 MHz; at 111.5 MHz, 20 percent of the total time-averaged power is polarized, 35 percent of the pulsing power is polarized, and the steady component is unpolarized

    Magneto-optical evidence of double exchange in a percolating lattice

    Substituting EuEu by CaCa in ferromagnetic EuB6EuB_6 leads to a percolation limited magnetic ordering. We present and discuss magneto-optical data of the Eu1−xCaxB6Eu_{1-x}Ca_{x}B_6 series, based on measurements of the reflectivity R(ω)R(\omega) from the far infrared up to the ultraviolet, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Via the Kramers-Kronig transformation of R(ω)R(\omega) we extract the complete absorption spectra of samples with different values of xx. The change of the spectral weight in the Drude component by increasing the magnetic field agrees with a scenario based on the double exchange model, and suggests a crossover from a ferromagnetic metal to a ferromagnetic Anderson insulator upon increasing CaCa-content at low temperatures.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
