Induction of Zenk protein expression within the nucleus taeniae of the amygdala of pigeons following tone and shock stimulation
In this study, we evaluated the expression of the Zenk protein within the nucleus taeniae of the pigeon’s amygdala (TnA) after training in a classical aversive conditioning, in order to improve our understanding of its functional role in birds. Thirty-two 18-month-old adult male pigeons (Columba livia), weighing on average 350 g, were trained under different conditions: with tone-shock associations (experimental group; EG); with shock-alone presentations (shock group; SG); with tone-alone presentations (tone group; TG); with exposure to the training chamber without stimulation (context group; CG), and with daily handling (naive group; NG). The number of immunoreactive nuclei was counted in the whole TnA region and is reported as density of Zenk-positive nuclei. This density of Zenk-positive cells in the TnA was significantly greater for the EG, SG and TG than for the CG and NG (P < 0.05). The data indicate an expression of Zenk in the TnA that was driven by experience, supporting the role of this brain area as a critical element for neural processing of aversive stimuli as well as meaningful novel stimuli448762766CONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQCOORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DE PESSOAL DE NÍVEL SUPERIOR - CAPESFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPsem informaçã
Spinor formalism for massive fields with half-integral spin
In this article, we extend the %Weyl-van der Waerden spinor technique for
calculating helicity amplitudes to general massive fields of half-integer
spins. We find that the little group generators can be represented as
first-order differential operators in the spinor formalism. We use the spinor
forms of the generators to get the explicit form of the massive fields of any
spin and any helicity. We also deal with the three-particle S-matrix by these
spinor form generators, and find that we are able to extend the explicit form
of the three-particle vertex obtained by Benincasa and Cachazo to the massive
case. We present the explicit expressions for the amplitudes with external
particles of the lowest helicities up to -3/2. Group theory, in the form of
raising operators of the little group, then dictates other amplitudes with
higher helicity in the same spin multiplets. The formalism allows, in
principle, to determine the electromagnetic form-factors of charged particles
of arbitrary helicities, without additional assumptions about the underlying
lagrangian. We find that restrictions which follow from gauge and Lorentz
invariance are nearly as restrictive as in the massless case.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figure
Superconformal Multi-Black Hole Moduli Spaces in Four Dimensions
Quantum mechanics on the moduli space of N supersymmetric Reissner-Nordstrom
black holes is shown to admit 4 supersymmetries using an unconventional
supermultiplet which contains 3N bosons and 4N fermions. A near-horizon limit
is found in which the quantum mechanics of widely separated black holes
decouples from that of strongly-interacting, near-coincident black holes. This
near-horizon theory is shown to have an enhanced D(2,1;0) superconformal
symmetry. The bosonic symmetries are SL(2,R) conformal symmetry and SU(2)xSU(2)
R-symmetry arising from spatial rotations and the R-symmetry of N=2
supergravity.Comment: 23 pages, harvmac. v2: many typos fixe
Complete Equivalence Between Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Twistor String Theory and in Gauge Theory
The gluon tree amplitudes of open twistor string theory, defined as contour
integrals over the ACCK link variables, are shown to satisfy the BCFW
relations, thus confirming that they coincide with the corresponding amplitudes
in gauge field theory. In this approach, the integration contours are specified
as encircling the zeros of certain constraint functions that force the
appropriate relation between the link variables and the twistor string
world-sheet variables. To do this, methods for calculating the tree amplitudes
using link variables are developed further including diagrammatic methods for
organizing and performing the calculations.Comment: 38 page
Basic Twist Quantization of osp(1|2) and kappa-- Deformation of D=1 Superconformal Mechanics
The twisting function describing a nonstandard (super-Jordanian) quantum
deformation of is given in explicite closed form. The quantum
coproducts and universal R-matrix are presented. The non-uniqueness of the
twisting function as well as two real forms of the deformed
superalgebras are considered. One real quantum superalgebra is
interpreted as describing the -deformation of D=1, N=1 superconformal
algebra, which can be applied as a symmetry algebra of N=1 superconformal
mechanics.Comment: 13 pages,LaTeX, v2. References added, typos correcte
From lightcone actions to maximally supersymmetric amplitudes
In this article actions for N=4 SYM and N=8 supergravity are formulated in
terms of a chiral superfield, which contains only the physical degrees of
freedom of either theory. In these new actions, which originate from the
lightcone superspace, the supergravity cubic vertex is the square of the gauge
theory one (omitting the color structures). Amplitude calculations using the
corresponding Feynman supergraph rules are tedious, but can be simplified by
choosing a preferred superframe. Recursive calculations of all MHV amplitudes
in N=4 SYM and the four-point N=8 supergravity amplitude are shown to agree
with the known results and connections to the BCFW recursion relations are
pointed out. Finally, the new path integrals are discussed in the context of
the double-copy property relating N=4 SYM theory to N=8 supergravity.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures, v2: title modified, published versio
Multi-frequency, Multi-Epoch Study of Mrk 501: Hints for a two-component nature of the emission
Since the detection of very high energy (VHE) -rays from Mrk 501, its
broad band emission of radiation was mostly and quite effectively modeled using
one zone emission scenario. However, broadband spectral and flux variability
studies enabled by the multiwavelength campaigns carried out during the recent
years have revealed rather complex behavior of Mrk 501. The observed emission
from Mrk 501 could be due to a complex superposition of multiple emission
zones. Moreover new evidences of detection of very hard intrinsic -ray
spectra obtained from {\it Fermi}--LAT observations have challenged the
theories about origin of VHE -rays. Our studies based on {\it
Fermi}--LAT data indicate the existence of two separate components in the
spectrum, one for low energy -rays and the other for high energy
-rays. Using multiwaveband data from several ground and space based
instruments, in addition to HAGAR data, the spectral energy distribution of
Mrk~501 is obtained for various flux states observed during 2011. In the
present work, this observed broadband spectral energy distribution is
reproduced with a leptonic, multi-zone Synchrotron Self-Compton model.Comment: Published in Astrophysical Journal (ApJ
OPE for Super Loops
We extend the Operator Product Expansion for Null Polygon Wilson loops to the
Mason-Skinner-Caron-Huot super loop, dual to non MHV gluon amplitudes. We
explain how the known tree level amplitudes can be promoted into an infinite
amount of data at any loop order in the OPE picture. As an application, we
re-derive all one loop NMHV six gluon amplitudes by promoting their tree level
expressions. We also present some new all loops predictions for these
amplitudes.Comment: 16 pages + appendices; 5 figure
