    Au+Au Reactions at the AGS: Experiments E866 and E917

    Particle production and correlation functions from Au+Au reactions have been measured as a function of both beam energy (2-10.7AGeV) and impact parameter.     During the reporting period a system was constructed for testing advanced cylindrical cesium-vapor thermionic converters with indirectly heated emitters. Initial testing of a cylindrical diode with a platinum-clad niobium emitter in pure cesium vapor showed that pulse enhancement could not be obtained with forward pulses as in previous inert gas planar diodes, but the expected enhancement was obtained for reverse pulses. During testing, the arc drop in the unpulsed igtited mode of this converter gradually disappeared. This highly favorable result is tentatively thought to have occurred due to a new type of discharge occurring in a cavity formed by movement of the platinum cladding. A demountable cesium vapor system was also constructed for expanding the exploration of advanced converter configurations previously performed in at inert gas system. A preliminary evaluation of thermionic topping of large electric power plants was performed to illustrate the significance of advanced converter performance in a reoriented general thermionic conversion program.     Dynamics of 1,3-diphenylpropane tethered to the interior pore surfaces of MCM-41

    The diffusive motions of covalently tethered 1,3-diphenylpropane (DPP) via a silyl-aryl-ether linkage in the mesopores of MCM-41 were studied by quasielastic neutron scattering. The geometric effect of pore radius was investigated with samples having pores that ranged from 1.6 to 3.0 nm in diameter and highest achievable DPP grafting density. The effect of molecular crowding was investigated in 3.0 rim diameter pores for surface coverage ranging from 0.60 to 1.61 DPP/nm(2). Temperature dependence was determined for large pore diameter samples from 240 to 370 K. As the DPP molecules remain attached over this entire temperature range, data were analyzed in terms of a model of localized diffusion inside a sphere. Only the motions of the DPP hydrogen atoms were considered because of the high sensitivity of neutron scattering to the presence of hydrogen. As atoms far from the attachment point have a greater range of motion than those nearer the tether, the radius of the sphere limiting the motion of individual hydrogen atoms was allowed to increase based on the atom's distance from the tether point Both smaller pore diameters and higher DPP grafting density resulted in larger amplitude motion while the diffusion coefficient was greatest in the largest pores at highest DPP density. These observations support a model where the DPP molecules prefer an orientation allowing close proximity to the MCM-41 pore surface and are forced into the pore interior by either the steric effect of small pore diameter or by increased competition for surface area at high molecule surface coverage

    Distribution of DNA repair-related ESTs in sugarcane

    DNA repair pathways are necessary to maintain the proper genomic stability and ensure the survival of the organism, protecting it against the damaging effects of endogenous and exogenous agents. In this work, we made an analysis of the expression patterns of DNA repair-related genes in sugarcane, by determining the EST (expressed sequence tags) distribution in the different cDNA libraries of the SUCEST transcriptome project. Three different pathways - photoreactivation, base excision repair and nucleotide excision repair - were investigated by employing known DNA repair proteins as probes to identify homologous ESTs in sugarcane, by means of computer similarity search. The results showed that DNA repair genes may have differential expressions in tissues, depending on the pathway studied. These in silico data provide important clues on the potential variation of gene expression, to be confirmed by direct biochemical analysis.<br>As vias de reparo de DNA são requeridas para manter a necessária estabilidade genômica e garantir a sobrevivência do organismo, frente aos efeitos deletérios causados por fatores endógenos e exógenos. Neste trabalho, realizamos a análise dos padrões de expressão dos genes de reparo de DNA encontrados na cana-de-açúcar, pela determinação da distribuição de ESTs nas diferentes bibliotecas de cDNA no projeto de transcriptoma SUCEST. Três vias de reparo - fotorreativação, reparo por excisão de bases e reparo por excisão de nucleotídeos - foram estudadas através do uso de proteínas de reparo como sondas para identificação de ESTs homólogos em cana-de-açúcar, com base na procura computacional de similaridade. Os resultados indicam que os genes de reparo de DNA possuem uma expressão diferencial nos tecidos, dependendo da via de reparo analisada. Esses dados in silico fornecem importantes indícios da expressão diferencial, a qual deve ser confirmada por análises bioquímicas diretas
