    Three-dimensional coherent X-ray diffraction imaging of a ceramic nanofoam: determination of structural deformation mechanisms

    Ultra-low density polymers, metals, and ceramic nanofoams are valued for their high strength-to-weight ratio, high surface area and insulating properties ascribed to their structural geometry. We obtain the labrynthine internal structure of a tantalum oxide nanofoam by X-ray diffractive imaging. Finite element analysis from the structure reveals mechanical properties consistent with bulk samples and with a diffusion limited cluster aggregation model, while excess mass on the nodes discounts the dangling fragments hypothesis of percolation theory.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 30 reference

    Fluctuating Bond Aggregation: a Model for Chemical Gel Formation

    The Diffusion-Limited Cluster-Cluster Aggregation (DLCA) model is modified by including cluster deformations using the {\it bond fluctuation} algorithm. From 3dd computer simulations, it is shown that, below a given threshold value cgc_g of the volumic fraction cc, the realization of all intra-aggregate bonding possibilities prevents the formation of a gelling network. For c>cgc>c_g, the sol-gel transition occurs at a time tgt_g which, in contrast to DLCA, doesnot diverge with the box size.     Band Formation during Gaseous Diffusion in Aerogels

    We study experimentally how gaseous HCl and NH_3 diffuse from opposite sides of and react in silica aerogel rods with porosity of 92 % and average pore size of about 50 nm. The reaction leads to solid NH_4Cl, which is deposited in thin sheet-like structures. We present a numerical study of the phenomenon. Due to the difference in boundary conditions between this system and those usually studied, we find the sheet-like structures in the aerogel to differ significantly from older studies.     EczemaNet: automating detection and severity assessment of atopic dermatitis

    Atopic dermatitis (AD), also known as eczema, is one of themost common chronic skin diseases. AD severity is primarily evaluatedbased on visual inspections by clinicians, but is subjective and has largeinter- and intra-observer variability in many clinical study settings. Toaid the standardisation and automating the evaluation of AD severity,this paper introduces a CNN computer vision pipeline, EczemaNet, thatfirst detects areas of AD from photographs and then makes probabilisticpredictions on the severity of the disease. EczemaNet combines trans-fer and multitask learning, ordinal classification, and ensembling overcrops to make its final predictions. We test EczemaNet using a set of im-ages acquired in a published clinical trial, and demonstrate low RMSEwith well-calibrated prediction intervals. We show the effectiveness of us-ing CNNs for non-neoplastic dermatological diseases with a medium-sizedataset, and their potential for more efficiently and objectively evaluatingAD severity, which has greater clinical relevance than mere classification

    A Silicon, Carbon and Deuterium NMR Investigation of Molecular Templating in Amorphous Silicas

    The precise pore sizes defined by crystalline zeolite lattices have led to intensive research on zeolite membranes. Unfortunately zeolites have proven to be extremely difficult to prepare in a defect-free thin film form needed for membrane flux and selectivity. We introduce tetrapropylammonium TPA (a structure directing agent for zeolite ZSM-5) into a silica sol and exploit the development of high solvation stresses to create templated amorphous silicas with pore apertures comparable in size to those of ZSM-5. {sup 29}Si and {sup 2}H NMR experiments were performed to evaluate the efficacy of our templating approach. The {sup 29}Si NMR spectrum of the silica matrix was observed by an intermolecular cross-polarization experiment between the {sup 1}H nuclei of TPA and the {sup 29}Si nuclei in the silica matrix. The efficiency of the cross-polarization interaction was used to investigate the degree to which the matrix formed a tight cage surrounding the template molecule. Normally prepared xerogel materials exhibited only weak interactions between the two sets of nuclei. Drying under reduced pressure, where solvation stresses are maximized, resulted in significantly increased interactions. Analogous materials were prepared using fully deuterated TPA. The {sup 2}H NMR wideline spectra consisted of a partially narrowed resonance, corresponding to template molecules which were undergoing restricted rotational motion, and an isotropically narrowed resonance, corresponding to molecules which were undergoing rapid rotational motion. The number of isotropically rotating template molecules decreased for specimens dried under reduced pressure, consistent with improved templating of amorphous silica by TPA

    What do cyclists need to see to avoid single-bicycle crashes?

    The number of single-bicycle crash victims is substantial in countries with high levels of cycling. To study the role of visual characteristics of the infrastructure, such as pavement markings, in single-bicycle crashes, a study in two steps was conducted. In Study 1, a questionnaire study was conducted among bicycle crash victims (n = 734). Logistic regression was used to study the relationship between the crashes and age, light condition, alcohol use, gaze direction and familiarity with the crash scene. In Study 2, the image degrading and edge detection method (IDED-method) was used to investigate the visual characteristics of 21 of the crash scenes. The results of the studies indicate that crashes, in which the cyclist collided with a bollard or road narrowing or rode off the road, were related to the visual characteristics of bicycle facilities. Edge markings, especially in curves of bicycle tracks, and improved conspicuity of bollards are recommended. Statement of Relevance: Elevated single-bicycle crash numbers are common in countries with high levels of cycling. No research has been conducted on what cyclists need to see to avoid this type of crash. The IDED-method to investigate crash scenes is new and proves to be a powerful tool to quantify 'visual accessibility'. © 2011 Taylor & Francis

    Adapting Decision DAGs for Multipartite Ranking

    European Conference, ECML PKDD 2010, Barcelona, Spain, September 20-24, 2010Multipartite ranking is a special kind of ranking for problems in which classes exhibit an order. Many applications require its use, for instance, granting loans in a bank, reviewing papers in a conference or just grading exercises in an education environment. Several methods have been proposed for this purpose. The simplest ones resort to regression schemes with a pre- and post-process of the classes, what makes them barely useful. Other alternatives make use of class order information or they perform a pairwise classi cation together with an aggregation function. In this paper we present and discuss two methods based on building a Decision Directed Acyclic Graph (DDAG). Their performance is evaluated over a set of ordinal benchmark data sets according to the C-Index measure. Both yield competitive results with regard to stateof- the-art methods, specially the one based on a probabilistic approach, called PR-DDA
