Free surface films of binary liquid mixtures

Model-H is used to describe structures found in the phase separation in films of binary liquid mixture that have a surface that is free to deform and also may energetically prefer one of the components. The film rests on a solid smooth substrate that has no preference for any component. On the one hand the study focuses on static aspects by investigating steady states that are characterised by their concentration and film height profiles. A large variety of such states are systematically analysed by numerically constructing bifurcation diagrams in dependence of a number of control parameters. The numerical method used is based on minimising the free energy functional at given constraints within a finite element method for a variable domain shape. The structure of the bifurcation diagrams is related to the symmetry properties of the individual solutions on the various branches. On the other hand the full time dependent model-H is linearised about selected steady states, in particular, the laterally invariant, i.e.\ layered states. The resulting dispersion relations are discussed and related to the corresponding bifurcation points of the steady states. In general, the results do well agree and confirm each other. The described analysis is performed for a number of important cases whose comparison allows us to gain an advanced understanding of the system behaviour: We distinguish the critical and off-critical case that correspond to zero and non-zero mean concentration, respectively. In the critical case the investigation focuses on (i) flat films without surface bias, (ii) flat films with surface bias, (iii) height-modulated films without surface bias, and (iv) height-modulated films with surface bias. Each case is analysed for several mean film heights and (if applicable) energetic bias at the free surface using the lateral domain size as main control parameter. Linear stability analyses of layered films and symmetry considerations are used to understand the structures of the determined bifurcation diagrams. For off-critical mixtures our study is more restricted. There we consider height-modulated films without and with surface bias for several mean film heights and (if applicable) energetic bias employing the mean concentration as main control parameter

Bifurcation diagrams for polymer blends with diffuse interfaces in confined and adaptive geometries

Dynamics of binary mixtures such as polymer blends, and fluids near the critical point, is described by the model-H, which couples momentum transport and diffusion of the components [1]. We present an extended version of the model-H that allows to study the combined effect of phase separation in a polymer blend and surface structuring of the film itself [2]. We apply it to analyze the stability of vertically stratified base states on extended films of polymer blends and show that convective transport leads to new mechanisms of instability as compared to the simpler diffusive case described by the Cahn- Hilliard model [3, 4]. We carry out this analysis for realistic parameters of polymer blends used in experimental setups such as PS/PVME. However, geometrically more complicated states involving lateral structuring, strong deflections of the free surface, oblique diffuse interfaces, checkerboard modes, or droplets of a component above of the other are possible at critical composition solving the Cahn Hilliard equation in the static limit for rectangular domains [5, 6] or with deformable free surfaces [6]. We extend these results for off-critical compositions, since balanced overall composition in experiments are unusual. In particular, we study steady nonlinear solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation for bidimensional layers with fixed geometry and deformable free surface. Furthermore we distinguished the cases with and without energetic bias at the free surface. We present bifurcation diagrams for off-critical films of polymer blends with free surfaces, showing their free energy, and the L2-norms of surface deflection and the concentration field, as a function of lateral domain size and mean composition. Simultaneously, we look at spatial dependent profiles of the height and concentration. To treat the problem of films with arbitrary surface deflections our calculations are based on minimizing the free energy functional at given composition and geometric constraints using a variational approach based on the Cahn-Hilliard equation. The problem is solved numerically using the finite element method (FEM)

Thin polymer films are increasingly used in advanced technological applications. The use of these films as coatings is often limited by their lack of stability due to their wettability properties on the substrate

Demotivation Factors in L2 Learning: A Case Study of Graduate Students

    No full text
The article discusses the demotivation factors influencing graduate students studying English in Libya. The study specifically looks to discuss how the sex of the student may influence the English learning process. For this reason, the study applies a quantitative research framework to test how factors such as classroom environment, low test scores, grammar-based teaching, and teacher's behaviour, amongst others, may influence overall student motivation levels. To conclude, a questionnaire composed of 35 questions was shared with 49 participants registered for graduate studies at the Libyan academy, and they were asked questions relating to course content, teaching material, grammar-based teaching, teacher's behaviour, the atmosphere of the learning place, affinity, and confidence level of the students. After conducting a T-test to evaluate the data, the study found that grammar-based instruction was the most demotivating factor for students. It was also revealed that gender did not affect the learning parameters of second-language learners

Two-dimensional steady states in off-critical mixtures with high interface tension

    No full text
We present 2D steady concentration profiles of confined layers of off-critical polymer blends. The layer rests on a solid substrate and has a flat free surface due to very high surface tension. The profiles correspond to non-linear steady solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation in a rectangular domain. The free polymer-gas interface is considered to be sharp, while the internal interfaces are diffuse. We explore the rich solution structure (including laterally structured layers, stratified layers, checkerboard structures, oblique states and droplets) as a function of mean concentration
