    Structural aspects of bis(quadridentate)zirconium(IV) complexes

    The synthesis of bis(quadridentate)-zirconium (IV) complexes was completed of which two new complexes, bis(N,N\u27-disalicylidene-cis-1,2,diamino-cyclohexane( zirconium (IV) and bis(N,N\u27disalicylidene-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane)zirconium(IV), were deemed suitable for physical and chemical comparisons to bis(N,N\u27-disalicylidene-1,2-phenylenediamino)-zirconium(IV). Using H-NMR spectroscopy at low temperatures, it was determined that the interconversion of the cyclohexane moiety of bis(N,N\u27disalicylidene-cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane) zirconium(IV) begins to slow whereas, the motions associated with the backbones of the other two complexes do not. Furthermore, using H-NMR spectroscopy, it was determined that heating solutions of pairs of the complexes for four days at 155 C causes the complex to exchange ligands to form mixed-ligand complexes

    High resolution time series reveals cohesive but short-lived communities in coastal plankton

The definitive version was published in Nature Communications 9 (2018): 266, doi:10.1038/s41467-017-02571-4.Because microbial plankton in the ocean comprise diverse bacteria, algae, and protists that are subject to environmental forcing on multiple spatial and temporal scales, a fundamental open question is to what extent these organisms form ecologically cohesive communities. Here we show that although all taxa undergo large, near daily fluctuations in abundance, microbial plankton are organized into clearly defined communities whose turnover is rapid and sharp. We analyze a time series of 93 consecutive days of coastal plankton using a technique that allows inference of communities as modular units of interacting taxa by determining positive and negative correlations at different temporal frequencies. This approach shows both coordinated population expansions that demarcate community boundaries and high frequency of positive and negative associations among populations within communities.     Co-design with Integrated Care Teams: Establishing Information Needs

    Introduction: Co-design has been cited as playing a major role in the future of effective integrated care, however, there is a lack of reporting and reflection on the methods used. Information sharing is fundamental when working in integrated care, however sharing across professions, service settings and localities can be complex. Through co-design, we seek to establish a shared understanding of information needs within a newly formed integrated care team. In doing so we aim to inform future practice in the understanding of co-design. Description: Co-design Workshop 1 (N = 24 participants, plus 6 facilitators), collected ‘Current Position’ understanding of service information needs. Co-design Workshop 2 (N = 18 participants, plus 6 facilitators) sought a ‘Future Position’ understanding, identifying solutions and next steps for establishing information-need solutions. Reflection on the co-design process was conducted to inform future co-design practices. Conclusion: Identified was a wide range of future service information needs under the themes of Culture Building, Health System Needs, and Processes. We conclude with 4 key learning points on co-designing. 1. Ensure simplicity in format. 2. Interdisciplinary co-design and co-facilitation of workshops are beneficial. 3. Planning and preparation are key. 4. Co-designing can enhance communication for service improvement

    CMB observations from the CBI and VSA: A comparison of coincident maps and parameter estimation methods

    We present coincident observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the Very Small Array (VSA) and Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) telescopes. The consistency of the full datasets is tested in the map plane and the Fourier plane, prior to the usual compression of CMB data into flat bandpowers. Of the three mosaics observed by each group, two are found to be in excellent agreement. In the third mosaic, there is a 2 sigma discrepancy between the correlation of the data and the level expected from Monte Carlo simulations. This is shown to be consistent with increased phase calibration errors on VSA data during summer observations. We also consider the parameter estimation method of each group. The key difference is the use of the variance window function in place of the bandpower window function, an approximation used by the VSA group. A re-evaluation of the VSA parameter estimates, using bandpower windows, shows that the two methods yield consistent results.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Final version.     Radiative Transfer Analysis of Far-UV Background Observations Obtained with the Far-Ultraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST)

    In 1992 the Far-Ultraviolet Space Telescope (FAUST) provided measurements of the ultraviolet (140-180nm) diffuse sky background at high, medium, and low Galactic latitudes. A significant fraction of the detected radiation was found to be of Galactic origin, resulting from scattering by dust in the diffuse interstellar medium. To simulate the radiative transfer in the Galaxy, we employed a Monte Carlo model which utilized a realistic, non-isotropic radiation field based on the measured fluxes (at 156nm) and positions of 58,000 TD-1 stars, and a cloud structure for the interstellar medium. The comparison of the model predictions with the observations led to a separation of the Galactic scattered radiation from an approximately constant background, attributed to airglow and extragalactic radiation, and to a well constrained determination of the dust scattering properties. The derived dust albedo a = 0.45 +/- 0.05 is substantially lower than albedos derived for dust in dense reflection nebulae and star-forming regions, while the phase function asymmetry g = 0.68 +/- 0.10 is indicative of a strongly forward directed phase function. We show the highly non-isotropic phase function to be responsible, in conjunction with the non-isotropic UV radiation field, for the wide range of observed correlations between the diffusely scattered Galactic radiation and the column densities of neutral atomic hydrogen. The low dust albedo is attributed to a size distribution of grains in the diffuse medium with average sizes smaller than those in dense reflection nebulae.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures included, to be published in the Ap

    Prevalence, predictors and perinatal outcomes of peri-conceptional alcohol exposure - retrospective cohort study in an urban obstetric population in Ireland

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Evidence-based advice on alcohol consumption is required for pregnant women and women planning a pregnancy. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence, predictors and perinatal outcomes associated with peri-conceptional alcohol consumption.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort study of 61,241 women who booked for antenatal care and delivered in a large urban maternity hospital between 2000 and 2007. Self-reported alcohol consumption at the booking visit was categorised as low (0-5 units per week), moderate (6-20 units per week) and high (>20 units per week).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of the 81% of women who reported alcohol consumption during the peri-conceptional period, 71% reported low intake, 9.9% moderate intake and 0.2% high intake. Factors associated with moderate alcohol consumption included being in employment OR 4.47 (95% CI 4.17 to 4.80), Irish nationality OR 16.5 (95% CI 14.9 to 18.3), private health care OR 5.83 (95% CI 5.38 to 6.31) and smoking OR 1.86 (95% CI 1.73 to 2.01). Factors associated with high consumption included maternal age less than 25 years OR 2.70 (95% CI 1.86 to 3.91) and illicit drug use OR 6.46 (95% CI 3.32 to 12.60). High consumption was associated with very preterm birth (<32 weeks gestation) even after controlling for socio-demographic factors, adjusted OR 3.15 (95% CI 1.26-7.88). Only three cases of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome were recorded (0.05 per 1000 total births), one each in the low, moderate and high consumption groups.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Public Health campaigns need to emphasise the importance of peri-conceptional health and pre-pregnancy planning. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is likely to be under-reported despite the high prevalence of alcohol consumption in this population.</p

    Detection of Extended Red Emisson in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

    Extended Red Emission (ERE) has been detected in many dusty astrophysical objects and this raises the question: Is ERE present only in discrete objects or is it an observational feature of all dust, i.e. present in the diffuse interstellar medium? In order to answer this question, we determined the blue and red intensities of the radiation from the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and examined the red intensity for the presence of an excess above that expected for scattered light. The diffuse ISM blue and red intensities were obtained by subtracting the integrated star and galaxy intensities from the blue and red measurements made by the Imaging Photopolarimeter (IPP) aboard the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. The color of the diffuse ISM was found to be redder than the Pioneer intensities, contrary to that expected for scattered light (Diffuse Galactic Light [DGL]). The red DGL was calculated using the blue diffuse ISM intensities and the approximately invariant color of the DGL calculated with the DGL model. Subtracting the calculated red DGL from the red diffuse ISM intensities resulted in the detection of an excess red intensity. This represents the likely detection of ERE in the diffuse ISM since H-alpha emission cannot account for the strength of this excess and the only other known emission process applicable to the diffuse ISM is ERE. Thus, ERE appears to be a general characteristic of dust.     Connecting Land–Atmosphere Interactions to Surface Heterogeneity in CHEESEHEAD19

    The Chequamegon Heterogeneous Ecosystem Energy-Balance Study Enabled by a High-Density Extensive Array of Detectors 2019 (CHEESEHEAD19) is an ongoing National Science Foundation project based on an intensive field campaign that occurred from June to October 2019. The purpose of the study is to examine how the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) responds to spatial heterogeneity in surface energy fluxes. One of the main objectives is to test whether lack of energy balance closure measured by eddy covariance (EC) towers is related to mesoscale atmospheric processes. Finally, the project evaluates data-driven methods for scaling surface energy fluxes, with the aim to improve model–data comparison and integration. To address these questions, an extensive suite of ground, tower, profiling, and airborne instrumentation was deployed over a 10 km × 10 km domain of a heterogeneous forest ecosystem in the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin, United States, centered on an existing 447-m tower that anchors an AmeriFlux/NOAA supersite (US-PFa/WLEF). The project deployed one of the world’s highest-density networks of above-canopy EC measurements of surface energy fluxes. This tower EC network was coupled with spatial measurements of EC fluxes from aircraft; maps of leaf and canopy properties derived from airborne spectroscopy, ground-based measurements of plant productivity, phenology, and physiology; and atmospheric profiles of wind, water vapor, and temperature using radar, sodar, lidar, microwave radiometers, infrared interferometers, and radiosondes. These observations are being used with large-eddy simulation and scaling experiments to better understand submesoscale processes and improve formulations of subgrid-scale processes in numerical weather and climate models

    Providing High-Quality Care for Limited English Proficient Patients: The Importance of Language Concordance and Interpreter Use

    Background: Provider–patient language discordance is related to worse quality care for limited English proficient (LEP) patients who speak Spanish. However, little is known about language barriers among LEP Asian-American patients. Objective: We examined the effects of language discordance on the degree of health education and the quality of interpersonal care that patients received, and examined its effect on patient satisfaction. We also evaluated how the presence/absence of a clinic interpreter affected these outcomes. Design: Cross-sectional survey, response rate 74%. Participants: A total of 2,746 Chinese and Vietnamese patients receiving care at 11 health centers in 8 cities. Measurements: Provider–patient language concordance, health education received, quality of interpersonal care, patient ratings of providers, and the presence/absence of a clinic interpreter. Regression analyses were used to adjust for potential confounding. Results: Patients with language-discordant providers reported receiving less health education (β = 0.17, p &lt; 0.05) compared to those with language-concordant providers. This effect was mitigated with the use of a clinic interpreter. Patients with language-discordant providers also reported worse interpersonal care (β = 0.28, p &lt; 0.05), and were more likely to give low ratings to their providers (odds ratio [OR] = 1.61; CI = 0.97–2.67). Using a clinic interpreter did not mitigate these effects and in fact exacerbated disparities in patients’ perceptions of their providers. Conclusion: Language barriers are associated with less health education, worse interpersonal care, and lower patient satisfaction. Having access to a clinic interpreter can facilitate the transmission of health education. However, in terms of patients’ ratings of their providers and the quality of interpersonal care, having an interpreter present does not serve as a substitute for language concordance between patient and provider
