    InP homojunction solar cell performance on the LIPS 3 flight experiment

    Performance data for the NASA Lewis Research Center indium phosphide n+p homojunction solar cell module on the LIPS 3 Flight Experiment is presented. The objective of the experiment is to measure the performance of InP cells in the natural radiation environment of the 1100 km altitude, 60+ deg inclination orbit. Analysis of flight data indicates that the performance of the four cells throughout the first year is near expected values. No degradation in short-circuit current was seen, as was expected from radiation tolerance studies of similar cells. Details of the cell structure and flight module design are discussed. The results of the temperature dependency and radiation tolerance studies necessary for normalization and analysis of the data are included

    Characteristics of broadband lightning emissions associated with terrestrial gamma ray flashes

    To characterize lightning processes that produce terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs), we have analyzed broadband (<1 Hz to 30 kHz) lightning magnetic fields for TGFs detected by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) satellite in 2004-2009. The majority (96%) of 56 TGF-associated lightning signals contain single or multiple VLF impulses superposed on a slow pulse that reflects a process raising considerable negative charge within 2-6 ms. Some TGF lightning emissions also contain VLF signals that precede any appreciable slow pulse and that we term precursor sferics. The analyses of 9 TGFs related to lightning discharges with location uncertainty <100 km consistently indicate that TGFs are temporally linked to the early portion of the slow process and associated VLF impulses, and not to precursor sferics. The nearly universal presence of a slow pulse suggests that the slow process plays an important role in gamma ray production. In all cases the slow process raises negative charge with a typical mean current moment of +30 kA km. The resulting charge moment change ranges from small values below +10 C km to a maximum of +200 C km, with an average of +64 C km. The current moment waveform extracted from TGF sferics with single or multiple VLF impulses also shows that the slow process initiates shortly before the major TGF-associated fast discharge. These features are generally consistent with the TGF-lightning sequence reported by Lu et al. (2010), suggesting that the majority of RHESSI TGFs are produced during the upward negative leader progression prevalent in normal polarity intracloud flashes

    Revisiting the Expanded Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Treatment of Resistant Migraines

    There are currently 13 indications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The European Consensus Conference on Hyperbaric Medicine has 28 indications approved for its use. However, neither includes the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for neurological conditions such as migraines with aura. Recent research has made the attempt to fully understand the use of hyperbaric therapy in treatment of neurological conditions, but results have so far been inconclusive. We report a 23-year-old female with an 11-year history of migraines with aura who has received inadequate pharmacological treatment for her migraines since she began having them. Migraines have led her to significant loss of function. The patient underwent treatment at 1.5 absolute atmospheres in a hyperbaric chamber Monday through Friday for 1 hour each day for a total of 40 sessions but reported missing a few sessions over the 8-week period. No more than 1 session during a given week was missed and the patient received no other treatments for her migraines throughout this time period. By her 2

    The growing rate of consumption has drawn attention to measurable environmental impacts leading to the development of sustainability tools that can inform environmental, economic and social decisions. Façade glass is a widely used material that is highly recyclable material and is an important material for sustainable assessments as it promotes ideas of Circular Economy if it is done properly after taking into account the quantification of environmental impact associated with recycling activities. Design of sustainable products requires having a lifecycle perspective, including analyzing various End-of-Life (EoL) scenarios. This paper aims to investigate scenarios of when glass is disposed to demonstrate the applicability of glass in a Circular Economy. Life Cycle impact Assessment (LCA) and Circular Economy (CE) literature is critically reviewed to identify progress in research, methodologies employed and areas that require more research which this paper aims to resolve. It was determined recovery, also known as EoL, strategies for glass used in the Australian built environment lacked research despite the growing imperative of sustainable consumption. A typical glazing unit in a facade system was selected for assessment along with three (3) disposal scenarios. Quantifying the environmental impacts are to be interpreted in a LCA along with glass recovery strategies involving recycling, landfill and/or incineration with heat recovery. A CE assessment is performed by interpreting LCA environment impacts associated with the activities required to achieve circularity in a typical apartment in Sydney, Australia. This provides insights supports decision-makers who seek sustainable consumption through ideas of Circular Economy
