    The Formation of Population III Binaries from Cosmological Initial Conditions

    Previous high resolution cosmological simulations predict the first stars to appear in the early universe to be very massive and to form in isolation. Here we discuss a cosmological simulation in which the central 50 solar mass clump breaks up into two cores, having a mass ratio of two to one, with one fragment collapsing to densities of 10^{-8} g/cc. The second fragment, at a distance of 800 astronomical units, is also optically thick to its own cooling radiation from molecular hydrogen lines, but is still able to cool via collision-induced emission.     Forming a Primordial Star in a Relic HII Region

    There has been considerable theoretical debate over whether photoionization and supernova feedback from the first Population III stars facilitate or suppress the formation of the next generation of stars. We present results from an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement simulation demonstrating the formation of a primordial star within a region ionized by an earlier nearby star. Despite the higher temperatures of the ionized gas and its flow out of the dark matter potential wells, this second star formed within 23 million years of its neighbor's death. The enhanced electron fraction within the HII region catalyzes rapid molecular hydrogen formation that leads to faster cooling in the subsequent star forming halos than in the first halos. This "second generation" primordial protostar has a much lower accretion rate because, unlike the first protostar, it forms in a rotationally supported disk of approx. 10-100 solar masses. This is primarily due to the much higher angular momentum of the halo in which the second star forms. In contrast to previously published scenarios, such configurations may allow binaries or multiple systems of lower mass stars to form. These first high resolution calculations offer insight into the impact of feedback upon subsequent populations of stars and clearly demonstrate how primordial chemistry promotes the formation of subsequent generations of stars even in the presence of the entropy injected by the first stars into the IGM.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     The understanding of the formation, life, and death of Population III stars, as well as the impact that these objects had on later generations of structure formation, is one of the foremost issues in modern cosmological research and has been an active area of research during the past several years. We summarize the results presented at "First Stars III," a conference sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics.     Radiator Study for Stationary Lunar Landers

    This paper provides an overview of a study to identify, select and evaluate potential heat rejection radiators for application to small, low power, stationary lunar landers. While this study supported risk mitigation activities related to the International Lunar Network project, the radiator concepts and performance assessments are applicable to a wide range of lunar lander applications. The radiator concepts identified and evaluated in this study were aimed at providing reliable heat rejection for landers that might be subjected to hot lunar noon conditions at the equator. As a part of the study, a literature search of lunar radiators was performed from which many radiator designs were developed. These designs were compared in a trade study and two of the most promising were used to develop six concepts. These six radiator concepts went through a more detailed thermal analysis using Thermal Desktop. The analysis considered heat rejection capability, and sensitivity to many factors such as dust deposition, latitude, life, and topographical features like landing on a hill, on a rock, or in a hole/crater. From the result of the analysis, two radiator concepts were selected for recommendation: a flat horizontal plate with a dust cover and a stacked vertical radiator with parabolic reflectors and a one degree tilting mechanism

    Organizations that face the threat of cyberattacks protect against those threats, in part, by hiring cybersecurity professionals who have both relevant experience and information security/cybersecurity certifications. Cybersecurity certificates vary in many aspects, involve costs, and offer associated potential financial returns. Given the large number of cybersecurity certificates available, the decision of which one(s) to pursue may not necessarily be straightforward. In this paper, we illustrate the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for cybersecurity certificate selection. Our analysis identifies six of 18 certifications considered that demonstrate a maximal relative efficiency, and we analyze why the other certifications are relatively inefficient

    Our efforts are oriented to assess bovine Y-chromosome gene expression patterns. One set of genes that are of interest are the so-called X-degenerate Y-chromosome genes that are located in the male-specific region of the Y-chromosome (MSY). This region contains 95% of the DNA of the Y chromosome. These genes are single copy and have an X-chromosome homolog. Both, the Y-encoded and X-encoded homologs have ubiquitous expression profiles. However, some genes, like SRY that regulates male sex determination, have functions that are more specific. Identifying DNA sequence differences between these homologs will allow evaluation of their spatial and temporal expression patterns. Identification of the Y-encoded mRNAs and their isoforms will allow our understanding of tissue specific expression of isoforms in male tissues. The latter will facilitate our evaluation of gene function in male sex differentiation and fertility. Hence, we hypothesized that each of these X-degenerate gene homologs generate isoforms and that differential expression patterns exist between sexes and across tissues. To investigate the latter we used a new generation sequencing (NGS) technology that generates long sequencing reads with a range between 1000 to 10,000 base pairs in length. Single molecule real time (SMRT) isoform sequencing (IsoSeq) of several tissues (liver, lung, adipose, muscle, hypothalamus and testis) was carried out. Transcript sequences were used for bioinformatics analysis and isoform characterization. Given the focus of this manuscript the SMRT technology we are only presenting results obtained with the analysis of the bUTY and bUTX genes.Nuestros esfuerzos están orientados a evaluar patrones de expresión génica del cromosoma Y bovino. Los genes de interés son los denominados genes X-degenerados que se encuentran en la región específica masculina del cromosoma Y (MSY). Esta región contiene el 95% del ADN del cromosoma Y. Estos genes son de copia única y tienen un homólogo en el cromosoma X. Ambos homólogos tienen perfiles amplios de expresión. Sin embargo, algunos genes, como el SRY que regula la determinación del sexo masculino, tienen funciones más específicas. La identificación de las diferencias de secuencia de ADN entre estos homólogos permitirá evaluar sus patrones de expresión espacial y temporal. La identificación de los ARNm codificados en el cromosoma Y y de sus isoformas permitirán analizar la expresión específica de sus isoformas en tejidos masculinos. Esto último facilitará nuestra evaluación de función génica en la diferenciación sexual masculina y la fertilidad. Por lo tanto, planteamos la hipótesis de que cada uno de estos genes homólogos degenerados del X genera isoformas y que existen patrones de expresión diferencial entre sexos y tejidos. Para investigar esto último, utilizamos una tecnología de secuenciación de nueva generación (NGS) que genera lecturas de secuenciación largas con un rango de longitud de 1000 a 10,000 pares de bases. Se secuenciaron los transcriptomas en varios tejidos (hígado, pulmón, adiposo, muscular, hipotálamo y testículo).     Effect of the Synthetic Bile Salt Analog CamSA on the Hamster Model of Clostridium difficile Infection

    Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and has gained worldwide notoriety due to emerging hypervirulent strains and the high incidence of recurrence. We previously reported protection of mice from CDI using the antigerminant bile salt analog CamSA. Here we describe the effects of CamSA in the hamster model of CDI. CamSA treatment of hamsters showed no toxicity and did not affect the richness or diversity of gut microbiota; however, minor changes in community composition were observed. Treatment of C. difficile-challenged hamsters with CamSA doubled the mean time to death, compared to control hamsters. However, CamSA alone was insufficient to prevent CDI in hamsters. CamSA in conjunction with suboptimal concentrations of vancomycin led to complete protection from CDI in 70% of animals. Protected animals remained disease-free at least 30 days postchallenge and showed no signs of colonic tissue damage. In a delayed-treatment model of hamster CDI, CamSA was unable to prevent infection signs and death. These data support a putative model in which CamSA reduces the number of germinating C. difficile spores but does not keep all of the spores from germinating. Vancomycin halts division of any vegetative cells that are able to grow from spores that escape CamSA

    Software Package Completed for Alloy Design at the Atomic Level

    As a result of a multidisciplinary effort involving solid-state physics, quantum mechanics, and materials and surface science, the first version of a software package dedicated to the atomistic analysis of multicomponent systems was recently completed. Based on the BFS (Bozzolo, Ferrante, and Smith) method for the calculation of alloy and surface energetics, this package includes modules devoted to the analysis of many essential features that characterize any given alloy or surface system, including (1) surface structure analysis, (2) surface segregation, (3) surface alloying, (4) bulk crystalline material properties and atomic defect structures, and (5) thermal processes that allow us to perform phase diagram calculations. All the modules of this Alloy Design Workbench 1.0 (ADW 1.0) are designed to run in PC and workstation environments, and their operation and performance are substantially linked to the needs of the user and the specific application

    Evaluation of the notifiable diseases surveillance system in sanyati district, Zimbabwe, 2010-2011

    Introduction: the Notifiable disease surveillance system (NDSS) was established in Zimbabwe through the Public Health Act. Between January and August 2011, 14 dog bites were treated at Kadoma Hospital. Eighty-six doses of anti-rabies vaccine were dispensed. One suspected rabies case was reported, without epidemiological investigations. The discrepancy may imply under reporting of Notifiable Diseases. The study was conducted to evaluate the NDSS in Sanyati district. Methods: a descriptive cross sectional study was conducted. Healthcare workers in selected health facilities in urban, rural, and private and public sector were interviewed using questionnaires. Checklists were used to assess resource availability and guide records review of notification forms. Epi InfoTM was used to generate frequencies, proportions and Chi Square tests at 5% level. Results: we recruited 69 participants, from 16 facilities. Twenty six percent recalled at least 9 Notifiable diseases, 72% correctly mentioned the T1 form for notification, 39% correctly mentioned the forms completed in triplicate and 20% knew it was a legal requirement to notify. Ninety six percent of respondents indicated willingness to participate, whilst 41% had ever received feedback. Three out of 16 health facilities had T1 forms. Conclusion: NDSS is useful, acceptable, simple, and sensitive. NDSS is threatened by lack of T1 forms, poor feedback and knowledge of health workers on NDSS. T1 forms and guidelines for completing the forms were distributed to all health facilities, public and private sector.
