On Stochastic Differential Equations in the Ito and in the Stratonovich Sense

    Get PDF
In this paper I looked into some modifications of the standard diffusion equation. First I added ``look back'' in the differential equation and proved that the solution of the new equation converged to the solution of the diffusion equation in the Ito sense. Then I proved that if we use an approximation to the Weiner process as well as ``look back'' our solution will depend on the order in which we take the limits. Specifically if we first let the look back go to zero then let our approximation to the Weiner process converge to the Weiner process we will converge to the diffusion equation understood in the Stratonovich sense and if we first let our approximation converge to the Weiner process then let our ``look back'' go to zero we will converge to the Ito integral

    Total Synthesis of (+)-18-Epi-Latrunculol A

    Get PDF
The total synthesis of (+)-18-epi-latrunculol A was undertaken to provide synthetic access to a sufficient amount of the scarce, sponge-derived macrolide to facilitate further biological evaluation. Preliminary bioassays revealed (+)-18-epi-latrunculol A to exhibit a selective, solid tumor cytotoxicity, while being devoid of the actin depolymerization activity customary to the latrunculin family of natural products, making the epimeric natural product a compound of interest for chemotherapeutics. An enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-18-epi-latrunculol A was accomplished; key features of the synthesis include a functional group compatible cross metathesis reaction, an acid mediated cyclization/equilibration, a Carreira alkynylation, and a late-stage Mitsunobu macrolactonization. Finally, a novel method was also discovered to achieve the cyclization of delta-hydroxy-E-enones under mild, photochemical conditions

Consensual Approaches to Resolving Public Policy Disputes

This Comment will explore various consensual approaches and their application to public disputes. Specifically, unassisted and assisted negotiation will be examined in detail.9 In addition, the specific application of consensual approaches will be explored in the context of public environmental disputes.\u270 Finally, the issue of alternative resolution to public disputes at the federal administrative level will be examined

Music Therapy for Adolescents Processing Bereavement: A Case Study of a Bereavement Camp for Youth

    Get PDF
This study explores a unique Canadian weekend camp for children and adolescents who are grieving the death of someone significant in their lives. The camp provides recreational activities such as campfires, horseback riding, and wall-climbing as well as therapeutic activities to help with grief such as music therapy. As part of a larger project on Canadian music therapy programming for youth (called “Meeting Youth In Music”), the present study’s purpose is to identify how music therapy interventions are applied and experienced in a particular program with adolescents experiencing bereavement. A case study research design was used and data collected from multiple sources. Primary data were generated by interviewing five stakeholders: the program director, the music therapist, a volunteer, and one adolescent and her mother (who were interviewed together). Thematic analysis was conducted on the interview transcripts, resulting in the identification of numerous themes about the application of music therapy practices. Identified themes characterize music therapy practices as fostering community connections, encouraging emotional expression, and supporting therapeutic practices for diverse populations. Findings of the current study suggest that music therapy interventions can provide benefit for bereaved adolescents. Future research can investigate the specific mechanisms of music which provide such therapeutic benefits

Evaluation of Accessibility Measures in Practitioner Policy and Their Effectiveness in Non-Metropolitan Areas

Abstract: Various accessibility measures exist to explore the performance of transport by quantifying the opportunities available at a particular, discrete location and the available means to travel both to and from these opportunities. In Australia there is currently no consistent performance measure used by regulatory authorities to evaluate accessibility in order to inform land-use planning decisions. Considering the widespread availability and usage of strategic transport modelling software, a unified accessibility metric would benefit practitioners when planning for future infrastructure needs. Furthermore, the development of accessibility measures has tended to focus on metropolitan areas without widespread exploration of their effectiveness in regional and rural areas, where public transport, walking and cycling opportunities are limited due to lower population densities and wider disaggregation of localities. This paper provides a review of the existing literature on accessibility performance measures, and identifies areas of potential research on transport accessibility in non-metropolitan areas, with the aim to improve the planning and delivery of future infrastructure needs in an optimised and sustainable manner. The Ellen Wilson Dwellings are currently vacant and distressed. The development was built in 1941 on the site of the Navy Place Slums, replacing inadequate alley dwellings occupied by the poor. Located in the Capitol Hill Historic Neighborhood, the Ellen Wilson Dwellings over the years have become increasingly isolated from the rest of the neighborhood

Repurposing literacy: the uses of Richard Hoggart for creative education

    Get PDF
After 50 years, what are the implications of Uses of Literacy for educational modernisation, in the light of subsequent changes from 'read only' literacy to 'read-write' uses of multimedia? This chapter argues that a broad extension of popular literacy via consumer-created digital content offers not only emancipationist potential in line with Hoggart's own project, but also economic benefits via the dynamics of creative innovation. Multimedia 'popular entertainments' pose a challenge to formal education, but not in the way that Hoggart feared. Instead of producing 'tamed helots,' commercial culture may be outpacing formal schooling in promoting creative digital literacy via entrepreneurial and distributed learning. It may indeed be that those in need of a creative make-over are not teenagers but teachers

Seedling Survival and Natural Regeneration For a Bottomland Hardwood Planting on Sites Differing in Site Preparation

In January 1998, three tracts in Hardin County, TX, were hand-planted with seven species of 1-0 bareroot bottomland hardwood seedlings. The tracts, managed by The Nature Conservancy of Texas, were previously 20-year-old pine plantations. The tracts are located within the floodplain of Village Creek. An objective for this conversion is the restoration of a bottomland hardwood wetland in order to meet Clean Water Act requirements. A pre-harvest plant inventory was conducted for each tract. The tracts were clearcut during the Winter and Spring of 1997. Following harvest, each tract was subjected to a different site preparation technique. One tract was burned. Another tract was treated with herbicide to control Chinese tallow. The third tract was sheared, piled, burned and ripped. Planted seedling survival was greatest (72 percent) on the tract that was sheared, piled, burned and ripped. Hardwood natural regeneration was proportionally higher on the tract prepared by burning only. However, this tract appeared to have a greater potential for hardwood root collar sprouting following harvest of the pine overstory. Chinese tallow was a large portion of all natural woody regeneratton on each tract
